The El Dorado golf course at Quail Valley celbrated its one year anniversary in style last weekend.

To mark the occasion, play-ers received a complimen-tary Quail Valley El Dorado course hat when they booked their next outing on the El Dorado Course.

Since the 18-hole course underwent a major renova-tion by premier golf architect Jeff Blume, nearly twenty-thousand golfers have played on it.

The El Dorado course has hosted over forty golf tour-naments and was a qualify-ing site for the 2010 Houston

City Amateur, Houston Bap-tist Fall Invitational and the AJGA Houston Junior tourna-ments.

The course has received a lot of praise from players of all calibers including 2009 PGA Champion Y.E. Yang who played on the El Dorado before its opening.

Yang said how pleased he was with the layout following his round of golf.

Local players have also en-joyed the El Dorado course. “The course is challenging yet fair, which is why we are see-ing a lot of players returning on a regular basis” said Tyson Stittleburg, Quail Valley Golf Course General Manager. “We are very pleased with the way the El Dorado Course has turned out.”

The future looks very bright for 2011 as the El Dorado Course will play host to more charitable and competitive tournaments.

Quail Valley Golf Course also offers another 18-hole course, the La Quinta, which features challenging play for any golfer. Both courses have new fees that make playing even more affordable, from single play to an annual pass. And don’t forget, once you are done playing to stop by The Grille for a snack, lunch or even dinner.

For a look at both El Do-rado and La Quinta courses, the new prices and even a menu at the Grille, visit www.golfquailvalley.com or call the pro shop at 281-403-5910.

Texas Children’s Hospital launches the Kids’ Fun Run challenge

By THOMAS J. PARR, M.D. Do your fi ngers, your hips,

or your knees hurt enough to affect what you do? Is it just one joint or a number of joints?

This might be arthritis. There are two major kinds of arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthri-tis (RA) and Osteoarthritis. In both cases, early diagno-sis and treatment is important to your long-term ability to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, where the body decides to attack its own joint tissues, trying to destroy the lining, cartilage, and cushioning tissues of the joints. Most likely, rheumatoid arthritis will attack a number of joints at the same time.

RA is a systemic disease, which will also typically at-tack other body tissues, such as the lungs, heart, and eyes. If left untreated, it can eventu-ally cause severe incapacity.

RA is three times more common in women than men, and can often run in families. It usually fi rst shows up be-tween the ages of 30 and 50.

Preteens and teenagers can develop a form of RA, called juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

Since JIA occurs in pa-tients with growing bones, the infl ammation can cause life-long joint deformities and pain.

On the other hand, osteoar-thritis is a degenerative joint disease (DJD) which develops over time due to wear and tear of specifi c joints, very com-monly started by some sort of trauma.

With osteoarthritis, the lin-ing, cartilage, and cushioning tissues are being worn away through use, until there is no protection left between the two bones of the joint.

In addition to fractures or trauma to a joint, obesity also is a factor in developing

degenerative joint disease. Osteoarthritis can also result from several less common causes, including congenital limb malformations, certain metabolic diseases, and neu-rologic injuries.

In the absence of preexist-ing problems with the joints, running does NOT cause ar-thritis.

Early diagnosis and treat-ment of both forms of arthritis are very important. Your pri-mary care physician can make the diagnosis of developing arthritis from your history and a physical exam, along with a series of blood tests and, in some cases, with x-rays.

X-rays taken several years after trauma, for example, might show development of bone spurs in the affected joint or narrowing of the space be-tween the joints. More exten-sive imaging studies are usu-ally not needed for diagnosis.

Today, we have a vast range of medicines which can dras-tically improve the long-term outcomes for rheumatoid ar-thritis.

Because their potential side effects and drug interactions are quite complex, RA pa-tients do best under the life-long care of a rheumatologist who is able to stay abreast of the continually changing pharmacology of RA drugs.

We also have new and im-proved medical and surgical treatments for all stages of os-teoarthritis.

If you have been diagnosed

with DJD, your orthopedic surgeon can guide you in a variety of early treatment op-tions designed to postpone your need for a total joint replacement for many years -- until you are fi nally bone-on-bone.

For your joints, motion is lotion! In order to continue functioning as long as pos-sible without major surgery, it is imperative to maintain an active lifestyle.

And the more physically fi t you are when you do fi nally have the joint replaced, the better your chances of having a more successful outcome.

Exercise is important as part of the treatment for both RA and DJD. Walking one or two miles at a time several days a week is excellent, including walking in a swimming pool.

Muscles that still have good tone act as shock absorbers for the joints.

If you have either type of arthritis, you should consult your orthopedic surgeon be-fore becoming involved in contact sports, however.

Since excess weight con-tributes adversely to arthritis, it is important to slowly bring your weight down to a more appropriate level through a combination of improved diet and exercise habits.

The pain of arthritis, com-bined with the sheer energy of trying to move an extra 50 pounds or so, can rob you of vital mobility, while compli-cating future joint surgery and subsequent post-op recovery.

For both RA and DJD, the sooner you are able to start on an appropriately planned med-ical intervention program, the greater your chances are for reducing the long-term nega-tive effects of both forms of arthritis.

By RUSSELL C. JONES An hour or so after this

newspaper is published this week, Opening Day Partners will announce the name of Sugar Land’s new minor league baseball team. The subject of a public contest drawing over 8,000 entries, a second round runoff, and unending contro-versy, the name has been a topic of conversation for Sugar Landers for months.

The announcement will be made at Lakeview Elemen-tary School, the city’s oldest, where city offi cials, media and team staff will be outnum-bered by hundreds of excited students, each decked out in a new shirt or cap featuring the team’s new mascot and logo.

Regardless of the fi nal name, baseball and Sugar Land are starting a new era for the city.

Korean provocations

The news out of Korea would be frightening if one could really believe all of the saber rattling coming from the North. Last Thursday it launched an unprovoked rock-et attack on a nearby island be-longing to South Korea.

The purpose of the attack is not really an expression of unhappiness over joint U.S./South Korean military exer-cises in the Yellow Sea, as has been claimed. Nor is it in-tended as an abrogation of the 60 year old armistice between the two Koreas. Instead, it ap-pears to be an effort to force the United States back to multi-lateral talks.

Already China has called for such talks. The administration in Washington has opposed them, saying that a resumption of negotiations would reward the North for a series of provo-cations and backsliding on its commitments to abandon atomic-weapons programs.

The North Korean ac-

tion creates a conundrum for Obama. His natural philoso-phy would call for avoiding American infl uence on actions by third world countries; but he also would be sympathet-ic to a transfer of American wealth to a country which he views as having been the vic-tim of American power for so many years.

The most likely action will be a few rough words, fol-lowed by no substance.

With no real help coming from Obama, South Korea could use the latest provoca-tion as an excuse for starting its own nuclear program.

Gore backtracks on ethanol

“It is not a good policy to have these massive subsidies for fi rst-generation ethanol,” the speaker told a gathering of “clean energy fi nanciers” in Greece last week. The ben-efi ts of ethanol are “trivial.” Acknowledging the diffi culty of correcting a bad policy, he added “It’s hard once such a program is put in place to deal with the lobbies that keep it going.”

Let’s see, could that have been Gingrich, Palin, Hucka-bee, or McCain who said that? No, it was Al Gore, the king of all green, particularly when

it comes to carbon emissions, such as those pushed out of your average tailpipe.

So, why is it that 10% of the gasoline pumped in America today is made of corn ethanol? Surely there was some scien-tifi c proof that led Congress to make such a decision.

Guess again. According to Green Al, “One of the reasons I made that mistake is that I paid particular attention to the farmers in my home state of Tennessee, and I had a certain fondness for the farmers in the state of Iowa because I was about to run for President.”

As the Wall Street Journal noted this weekend, Gore’s confession proves that the whole ethanol myth has been a political play.

“It serves no purpose other than re-electing incumbents and transferring wealth to farm states and ethanol producers.”

Correction

Last week this column com-mented on a new phenomenon in director elections for the First Colony Community Ser-vices Association.

The assertion was made that yard signs for the election vio-late the city’s sign ordinance. The comment was made with the idea that such signs were being called “political”; if they are not, the sign ordinance would prohibit the signs.

Inexcusably, another section of the sign ordinance, allowing “stake signs” on private prop-erty, was not considered when that statement was written. Apparently the signs would be allowed under the sign ordi-nance as “stake signs.”

By JANICE SCANLAN Nowadays it seems we need

dictionaries for acronyms . . . and that the context for acro-nym usage is as important as context can be in language of words having multiple or dif-ferent shades of meaning. My business side came out this morning with BTW meaning “back to work” for me after the Thanksgiving holiday. I was so puzzled the fi rst time I got BTW in an email . . . and BTW was not a back to work idea—quite the contrary.

So when I started receiving it from multiple sources, I did what every dedicated comput-er user does for all things . . . I Googled it. The context for BTW here was “by the way” which is pretty different from back to work. But it seems BTW is a popular acronym for many contexts and not just British Telecom Wholesale or Booker T. Washington.

In the religious commu-nity it can mean “burn the witches,” but it can also mean “British Traditional Wicca.” So again, very context de-pendent. Do you want to bet that British Traditional Wicca came fi rst as a normal acronym, which by normal, I mean an abbreviation? Does anybody know or care?

In sports, BTW can mean “below the waist.” Not to be outdone, sports can also

use it as BIG TIME WRES-TLING. The conundrum is could someone be hit BTW in BTW?

But BTW can mean “be-hind the wheel” in transporta-tion . . . so could someone be BTW, hit BTW heading for BTW? I’m even lost which 3 contexts, and I just wrote the darn thing.

But internet chat is the winner with three more us-ages for BTW . . . one means “between,” another “bye till Wednesday,” while another means “But That’s Wild.”

In hobbies, BTW can mean Brothers of the Third Wheel. Now I had to Google that as well, and it seems that Broth-ers of the Third Wheel are trikers . . . motor cyclists who ride 3-wheel machines par-ticularly Harleys . . . that are quite interesting and inven-

tive . . . and they have chap-ters and “trike-ins.” Now are Brothers of the Third Wheel “behind the wheel3” in trans-portation or to the hip BTW3? Or perhaps semi-trailer truck drivers are BTW18.

The acronyms have turned into a new language called “digispeak,” “geekspeak,” “Internet speak,” “Webspeak” and “IMglish.” And you can download a popular diction-ary or go to more authorita-tive sources . . . all right in Google. And Noah Webster thought he had a franchise in 1806 for the dictionary?

That’s the wonderful thing about a holiday . . . it gives you a little time to be silly, decompress or just nap after over eating. . . even if it is a BTW (back to work) day af-terwards.

BTW (by the way) write to [email protected].

Musings: BTW

The team has a name

By FLOYD EMERYThere has been much discus-

sion recently in the local media and blogs concerning the pos-sible loss of our Chief of Police as he is being considered for a Chief’s position in another City.

This potential loss of a key member in the Missouri City management structure has con-sequences and gives us reason to look at the facts and impact surrounding this possible loss or for that matter the loss of any key City management in-dividual.

Missouri City has received awards and recognition of per-formance such as the 8th saf-est City in Texas, recognition of budgetary excellence by fi -nancial boards/organizations, a City that ranks 21st in the best city in America in which to live, parks and green space awards and a planning and engineer-ing function that is recognized by their peers and more impor-tantly by businesses looking to locate/relocate and who select Missouri City.

These successes place mem-bers of the City’s management team responsible for this per-formance, as a target of public and private “search commit-tees” and “headhunters” who are looking for potential candi-dates for open positions.

The potential loss of a key member of the Missouri City management team through this process is what I consider “the downside of Missouri City’s success.”

There can also be a person-al factor when we experience the loss of a key management member as there will be times when an individual will pursue

an independent search for em-ployment.

I submit that any individual worth their salt is driven to im-prove their lot in the business arena.

In most cases this drive is fu-eled by a desire and sometimes a fi nancial need to advance one’s earnings power and their station in life.

The ability to fi nd and se-cure a new position outside of the Missouri City management group is enhanced by the suc-cesses that can be displayed on one’s resume.

The loss of any key member of the Missouri City manage-ment team through this process is another example of what I consider “the downside of Mis-souri City’s success”.

The reporting of the potential loss of our Police Chief by the local media in most part states the facts and does not attempt to give an opinion on the un-derlying reasons for the Chief to consider making this move.

However in the blogs you can fi nd motives for this move ranging from the funding of our police force, direction from the City Council and other rea-

sons that are outside the realm of probability. In my opinion many of these bloggers are looking for any reason to criti-cize City offi cials and to push a personal political agenda.

As Missouri City faces the potential loss of key manage-ment personnel the City must insure that it has effective suc-cession planning programs in place and practical individuals qualifi ed to meet this need.

During the period when re-placements are being put into place I believe the City has displayed through its successes that it has programs and person-nel in place to meet the day to day safety needs of the public.

This readiness is what I con-sider an example of “the upside of Missouri City’s success.”

By BARBARA FULENWIDERThe 2011 Subaru Outback

Limited is no racer but torque has defi nitely been improved, which means it’s more fun to drive.

Even though the Outback got more horsepower for 2011 thanks to a 3.6-liter fl at-six, the story to report here is the torque. Horsepower provided by last year’s 3.0-liter was 245 compared to this year’s 256 but torque took a big leap from 215 lb.-ft. to 247.

The test drive Outback paired the engine to a fi ve-speed automatic, which sends power to the all-wheel drive system and is standard equip-ment on all Subarus. The torque splits 45 percent in front and 55 in the rear.

There are three transmis-sions available on Outbacks. Buyers who choose the 2.5i can have either a six-speed manual, which is standard equipment, or a continuously variable transmission. It is op-tional and a fi rst for a vehicle with all-wheel drive. The fi ve-speed automatic is smooth and comes with wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Along with having more torque and a tad more power, the 2011 Subaru Outback is also roomier. It’s built on a new platform and has a lon-ger wheelbase and increased width for more interior space. It stands 8.7 inches above the ground and has up to a 530-mile range capability when equipped with a 2.5i engine.

Also new for 2011 is a new rear vision camera that’s in-cluded in the power moon-roof option package. What the camera sees appears in the left side of the auto-dimming rear view mirror. The mirror with HomeLink is added to the optional navigation pack-age.

The harman/kardon audio package, which is standard on the limited and optional on premium models, now includes XM Satellite Radio with a three-month subscrip-tion.

The 2010 Subaru Outback got major changes in the style department so none were made on 2011 models. Even though Subaru considers its Outback an SUV, it sure looks like a station wagon and got lots of compliments on its looks during my test drive.

The Subaru Outback rides well on 17-inch tires and doesn’t let much road or wind noise invade the cabin. The Outback runs on unleaded regular and fuel economy

AUTOMOBILE: Nissan RogueBy BARBARA FULENWIDER

For 2011 the Nissan Rogue gets an upgraded look inside and out – including exterior, interior, comfort and conve-nience, and audio and enter-tainment system enhance-ments. Model names and options are also revised so the 2011 Rogue is now offered in two trim levels, S and SV, along with the sporty Rogue S Krom™ Edition.

Among the many enhance-ments for the fourth year of Rogue production is a rede-signed exterior featuring a new front fascia and grille, new front and rear spoilers, new chrome side door guard molding trim accents, new front and rear tire defl ectors and a new chrome license plate fi nisher.

Krom™ Edition and Rogue SL Package, new low roll-ing resistance tires (available with the 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels) and a new un-der-body cover.

The Nissan Rogue’s fuel economy has improved with estimates at 22/28 mpg for city and highway driving. Rogues with all-wheel drive get an estimated 22 miles to the gallon in the city and 26 on the highway.

Rogue S, Rogue SV and Rogue S Krom™ Edition are available with an intuitive all-wheel drive system.

The 2011 Nissan Rogue provides 58 cubic feet of cargo space combined with a 60/40 split rear seat and available fold-down front passenger seat. Utility is enhanced by numerous storage and func-tionality features, including an oversized glove compartment and large center console.

IN FORT BEND COUNTY

Fort Bend County’s Ju-dicial Steering Team (JST) has completed its four-year project to implement an in-tegrated justice system, said County Clerk Dianne Wilson, who headed the team.

The system enables shar-ing of critical information throughout the justice enter-prise symbolizing a new way of doing business in local courts and law enforcement agencies.

The implementation of Od-yssey system represented 23 offi ces/courts and more than 50 dedicated subject matter experts who collectively gave over 50,000 hours during the past four years.

With the integration of Od-yssey, the county has elimi-nated over 22 justice applica-tions with the savings of over $305,000 annually.

Included in the implemen-tation is an interface between Odyssey and the Constable System for exchanging of civil/criminal information.

In addition, the county re-ceived the fi rst rebate check of $65,712 from the Confer-ence of Urban Counties for participation in the CIJS Pro-gram.

Recently, the court ap-proved the implementation of additional applications to integrate with Odyssey: Jury, Auto-Redaction and E-fi ling to be paid from the project budget for a total of $560,000.

During these past four years, JST approved only one change order impacting the original $7.3 million Raw-hide budget.

“I’m proud to announce that Rawhide was completed on time and under budget for a project total expenditure of $6.5 million. JST estimates a return to the county of about $845,000 plus any additional rebates from the CUC,” Wil-son said.

“However, in 2011, we will bring a proposal for consid-eration: to interface Odyssey and Tiburon (Jail/Law En-forcement software) for the sharing of data which was in the original JST Business Plan,” she said.

At this time, the cost esti-mate is unknown.

Wilson presented certifi -cates to four special people who led Project Rawhide: Connie Heinecke, IT senior project manager, Paul Ilami, Tyler senior project manager, Teresa Kubena and Wes Wit-tig, co-project managers.
