The Wood Duck is a year-round resident in Fort Bend, but also a migrant of those who nest further north fly- ing into Mexico and warmer areas of the Southwest for winter. Santa Claus is coming to town By SESHADRI KUMAR A former sheriff’s deputy has filed a lawsuit against Fort Bend County in the federal dis- trict court claiming wrongful termination and violation of his first amendment right to free speech. The lawsuit filed in Decem- ber 2010 was expected to be settled out of court, but two weeks ago commissioners court rejected the proposed settle- ment. Following the failure of the settlement, Judge Nancy Atlas on Nov. 14 ordered that the case be reopened. A status confer- ence will be held on Nov. 30 in the courtroom. Plaintiff, William Butera was employed as a Deputy Sheriff for the Fort Bend County Sher- iff’s Office for just short of five years. Butera was discharged on June 1, 2010 without expla- nation. During his tenure with FBCSO, Butera was never dis- ciplined. He has been a peace officer in the State of Texas for 39 years. While employed at the FBC- SO, Butera served as the Presi- dent of the Fort Bend County Deputy Sheriff’s Association. Butera often discussed employ- ment related matters with the sheriff in his capacity as Presi- dent of the Association. In April 2009, Butera was asked to testify before a sub- committee of the Texas Leg- islature regarding a proposed amendment to Texas Local Government Code §158 (Coun- ty Civil Service). Butera met with State Rep. Dora Olivo regarding her proposed amend- ment. Butera was then asked to and did testify before the House sub-committee on County Af- fairs in his capacity as President of the FBCSDA regarding the proposed House Bill 1184. A representative from Fort Bend County Human Resources was also present to testify against the Bill. Upon returning to work the following day, Butera was in- formed by Captain Jim Pokluda that Sheriff Wright was “ex- tremely mad” about Butera go- ing to Austin and to “stay out his way for a couple of months,” Butera said in his lawsuit. In June 2009 Butera was asked to meet with Sheriff Wright regarding the testimony he provided to the Legislative Committee. Sheriff Wright ad- vised Butera that he was un- happy with him going to Aus- tin without his permission and Butera was regularly reminded by Sheriff Wright that he was unhappy about his testimony and support of the proposed legislation. Butera learned in June 2009 that Sheriff Wright had in fact terminated his em- ployment, but that action was reversed at the urging of Chief Deputy Craig Brady. Butera continued in his posi- tion as Deputy Sheriff and also remained President of the FBC- SDA through 2009 and into 2010. In late May 2010, Butera was again requested to travel to Austin in his capacity as Presi- dent of FBCSDA to meet with representatives of the Texas Municipal Police Association legislative committee regarding legislation similar to that pro- posed by State Representative Olivo in the 2009 Legislative Session. The meeting was to occur on June 2, 2010. On June 1, 2010 Butera was ordered to report to Sheriff Wright’s office and was told “your services are no longer needed” and that he was termi- nated effective immediately. No explanation was given and no disciplinary action was pending against Butera. Butera request- ed a reason for his termination and was advised by Sheriff Wright to “have a nice day”. Butera alleged that the sheriff took adverse employment ac- tion against him for exercising his constitutional rights guaran- teed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, and equal protection. Butera al- leged that the speech and asso- ciation in which he was engag- ing is protected by the United States Constitution. The county has yet to file its response. It’s learned that the sheriff did not fire Butera for his testimony because the sheriff himself was said to be in favor of civil service for the deputies Attorney Gregory B. A Missouri City Farmer’s Market got its fl edgling start celebrating the ground breaking of the Missouri City Recreation Center on Oct. 8. The response was so positive, the market will host a Thanksgiving Harvest Special Event November 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2601 Cart-wright on the Cypress Point side of the shopping center across from the new MC Recreation Center. Sponsored by Sorelle Deli that features fresh food from local farmers, the market will offer a wide variety of fresh, locally grown vegetables, fruits and yard eggs as well as the home growers who bring their “what’s growing” surprises. There are also crafters, custom orders of holiday wreaths and baskets as well as fresh baked goods inside the deli. Pictured, left to right, Karen Meier, Gretchen Cockerill, Sharon Wright and Sandy Smith serving City Forester Paul Wierzbicki at the October 8 celebration. Missouri City City Council will review on November 21, whether to authorize the market for several months while it is reviewing its special event ordinances. Contact Bennie Gonzalez of Sorelle at 281 208-9999 or just come have a good time on Saturday the 19th to shop for the holidays! Event held rain or shine.

Get in the holiday spirit by joining the Fort Bend Sym-phony Orchestra as it presents Deck the Halls on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Staf-ford Centre. After our long hot summer, enjoy “Frosty the Snowman” and “Let it Snow!” Other seasonal favorites in-clude “March of the Toys” and selections from “The Nut-cracker.” Of course, no holi-day concert is complete with-out Leroy Anderson’s classic “Sleigh Ride,” which was ac-tually written during the heat wave of August 1946. Santa Claus will also be on hand distributing candy and holiday cheer. Purchase tickets early to this popular concert by vis-iting www.fbso.org or by call-ing 281-276-9642. As always, children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult, but they need a reserved ticket. The Stafford Centre is located at 10505 Cash Road at Murphy Road in Stafford.

By BARBARA FULENWIDERMissouri City councilmen

at their Nov. 7 meeting unani-mously approved the hiring of Edward Broussard as the new city manager.

Broussard was born in Con-roe and grew up in Winnie and Bryan. He is currently the city manager of Hutto, a bedroom community near Round Rock and Austin that began growing exponentially during this past decade.

Prior to leading Hutto, Brous-sard, who has a total of 16 years in municipal government, was city manager of Navasota from 2001 to 2005, assistant city man-ager for Woodway from 2000 to 2001 and assistant city manager for College Station from 1997 to 2000.

He began his municipal gov-ernment career in Lubbock after fi nishing a graduate degree in public administration at Texas Tech. He is an undergraduate of Texas A&M who said that he went into public service because both of his parents are teachers.

“Public service is something I’ve been surrounded by my en-tire life. After fi nishing my un-dergraduate degree, I decided that getting into municipal gov-ernment is something I’d enjoy and it has been a fi eld I’ve been pleased to work in.” He said the variety of people and various is-

sues involved greatly interest him and that he “couldn’t ask for a bet-ter job.”

The No. 1 quality he said he believes is most important for a city manager to have is to care about people.

“That’s the big thing. We have to go out and be honest with the people and tell them the pros and cons. If we oversell, people get skeptical. We have to make sure everyone understands what’s be-ing accomplished.”

He evidently accomplished that in Hutto, which in the early 2000s, “was the fastest growing town in the state. When I joined Hutto, they were struggling to fi gure out what would be the best direction to take.”

So for him to go there as city

manager “was the opportunity to be part of an incredible story – to come in and take something that had just blown up over night and try to fi gure out how we form the different aspects of a municipal government.”

Broussard said Hutto grew so suddenly because of its 20-mile proximity to Austin. It had been agricultural land, so the land was cleared and fl at and relatively in-expensive to develop.

Developers were attracted by land prices and the fact that Hutto already had a public school sys-tem.

Builders began offering attrac-tive homes at affordable prices to those who wanted to raise their children in a small town that had its own school district.

Broussard joined Hutto in 2005 and after having set up a well functioning municipal govern-ment he began working on attract-ing more businesses to the town – something he plans to help ac-complish for Missouri City.

“With the hiring of an econom-ic development manager we were able to get everything together so there was a common direction, and we’ve been pushing for that non-stop.”

Among his major achieve-

ments in Hutto, Broussard lists working with its residents, city council and city staff on strategic planning, mixed-use develop-ments, economic development projects, new facilities, neigh-borhood integrity, beautifi cation, capital projects, charter revisions and land-use planning.

Broussard starts his new job in Missouri City on Jan. 2. His wife, Sammi, and their daughter, 12, and two sons, 15 and 10, will join him here this summer.

He said, “I’m excited about the opportunity of going to Missouri City. I had relatives who lived there until fi ve or 10 years ago, so when I was a kid back in the 1980s, I spent a week or so dur-ing summers in Missouri City. I really enjoyed what the commu-nity offered and being so close to Houston. It’s interesting now to bring my kids down there and have them become part of it.

About the job he will soon start in a familiar town, he said, “Mis-souri City has some things well under way that I want to continue to improve them – try to ensure that the industrial development they have started continues and look at the water and utilities plan for Missouri City. I’ve been im-pressed with where they are so

far. You can tell they’ve put a lot of effort into it.”

He joins Missouri City as city manager with a resume that shows he’s active in state and in-ternational city management as-sociations and is a credentialed manager with the International

City/County Management Asso-ciation.

Broussard was named the Texas City Management Asso-ciation’s 2011 Administrator of the Year and served on that orga-nization’s board of directors from 2009 to 2011.

Broussard joins Missouri City with high credentials

By RUSSELL JONESLocal radio talk show host Mi-

chael Berry went over the top Fri-day in response to numerous call-ins supporting Newt Gingrich for the Republican nomination for President. His phones went wild shortly after two polls were re-leased showing Gingrich running second in the race.

Berry is known for his rants, but he has usually confi ned him-self to outrage over liberals who make a living out of attacking the nation’s producers, free enterprise and individual rights specifi cally named in the Constitution. Tar-gets in the past have included Obama, Sheila Jackson Lee, Harry Reid, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and other recognized left-wingers.

Friday’s attack on Gingrich was different. Undoubtedly the intellectual leader of the conser-vative movement, his presidential campaign has been spotty from the start, stumbling with verbal gaffes early, the leadership of his campaign team having abandoned him while on vacation, and bot-tom feeding on past popularity among hard core supporters.

Berry rightly pointed out that the Republican goal next year must be to defeat Obama. Newt’s ideological purity may triumph in the party primary, but it is a sure cause for alienation of the independents, Hispanics, blacks and other minorities who must be attracted to the Republican can-didate in the general election in order to win.

It seems that Gingrich has a penchant for criticizing others for actions for which he himself is guilty. In 1992 he pressed for an investigation of overdrafts by leg-islators at the House bank, believ-ing that more Democrats than Re-publicans would be implicated. It turned out that he had kited a few checks himself. In 1997 Gingrich agreed to a $300,000 civil fi ne in

order to settle ethics allegations brought by Democrats. In 1998, targeted for blame by his own par-ty, he resigned as Speaker of the House following a mid-term elec-tion disastrous for Republicans.

Newt’s extramarital affair with his future third wife was his greatest offense, in part because, at the same time, he was preach-ing family values and leading the charge for Clinton’s impeachment following the Lewinsky debacle. Women of all persuasions have refused to forgive him for that transgression, and the result is a deep, visceral objection to Gin-grich on a personal level by half of all voters. The resulting defi cit would seem to be insurmount-able, even if a majority of Repub-lican primary voters can overlook such behavior.

In 2008 Gingrich appeared alongside Pelosi in a TV commer-cial sponsored by Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection, advocat-ing for “action to address cli-mate change.” Earlier this month Gingrich admitted the ad was the “dumbest single thing” he has done in recent years. Describing himself as “agnostic” on global warming, a rational position on an uncertain issue, Gingrich will continue to be haunted by the ad among conservatives who simply

deny the possibility of climate change.

Berry is right. Republicans must nominate a candidate who can beat Obama. The ammuni-tion with Gingrich’s name on it already stored in Democratic ar-senals would be enough to assure Republican defeat.

Shovel Ready JobsObama’s latest hypocrisy was

displayed Friday as he delayed the decision on whether to allow the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to Port Arthur until after the 2012 elec-tion. Following weeks of criti-cism of Republicans for failure to pass his jobs bill “now,” Obama skipped a chance to create 50,000 to 250,000 jobs almost immedi-ately. The pipeline would have the additional benefi t of reducing American reliance on Mideast oil. Fear of offending one of his two major constituencies, labor unions or environmentalists, cre-ated a paralysis resulting in no de-cision at all, a consequence appar-ently more acceptable to Obama than offending one interest group or the other.

Honoring HeroesVeterans Day does not pass in

Sugar Land without an extraor-dinary commemoration to all those who have given their lives and limbs to help preserve the freedoms which the rest of us enjoy. Last weekend the Opera-tion American Heroes Foundation and the Southwest 59 Sunrise Ro-tary Club sponsored two nights of honoring America’s heroes, not only its veterans, but its local fi rst responders as well.

Congratulations to both orga-nizations and to everyone who supported this remarkable event!

Jones served as a member of the Sugar Land City Council from 2003 through June, 2011. He owns a law fi rm and a title insurance company in Sugar Land.

Musings: Growing better community

The View from Sugar Land

Jones

Newt Agonistes

A community is more than its streets and buildings. It’s what it means to people and how it allows them to live, work , and play together determines wheth-er it takes root in the hearts and minds of its inhabitants or is just a bedroom or passing through point.

Growing a community is easy to talk about and hard to do. Last Thursday, Novem-ber 10, the Quail Valley Gar-den Club celebrated planting a grove of Golden Figs on the Ed-ible Arbor Trail on Oyster Creek (between the Fort Bend YMCA on Cartwright and Mosley Park on FM 1092). It was a beautiful day and poignant for many club members. Quail Valley Garden Club is 40 years old this year and planted its fi rst fi ve trees in 1974 at the Richmond State School. They’ve been planting trees ever since, particularly in Missouri City. They’ve also giv-en plenty of scholarships, land-scaped and maintain the Arbor at Ridgeview Park . . . and the list goes on.

It takes a lot of effort and commitment to fund raise and give service to the community. While some groups have grown large and have large fund rais-ing efforts, it’s all the groups contributing and individuals becoming involved that makes a community. It’s having a vari-ety of ways for people to meet, hold their club meetings, special events, or just informal happen-stance like meeting in the park.

And people won’t use parks

or trails unless they’re beautiful. People won’t support the commu-nity if parks and meeting places aren’t used. So it’s constantly planting trees, developing ame-nities and supporting gatherings that build a sense of community.

Roads and bridges may be its arteries. Parks and recreational opportunities are its soul.

Missouri City is really enter-ing a new era of understanding this concept and having city or-dinances that encourage groups to form, meet and then give back to the community. And it was a special event, The Quail Valley Backyard Tour that paid for the grove of trees . . . and the city issues permits for those events. Up until now, special events by groups could only be held every six months. And for most events that’s more than enough. You know if you’ve ever organized one! However, something like a Farmer’s Market that needs to meet periodically can’t develop unless it is held on a much more frequent basis. A Missouri City

Farmer’s Market got its fl edg-ling start celebrating the ground breaking of the Missouri City Recreation Center on October 8. The response was so positive, the market will host a Thanksgiving Harvest Special Event November 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m at 2601 Cartwright on the Cypress Point side of the shopping center across from the new MC Recreation Center.

Sponsored by Sorelle Deli that features fresh food from lo-cal farmers, the market will offer a wide variety of fresh, locally grown vegetables, fruits and yard eggs as well as the home growers who bring their “what’s growing” surprises. There are also crafters, custom orders of holiday wreaths and baskets as well as fresh baked goods inside the deli.

Missouri City Council will re-view on November 21, whether to authorize the market for several months while it is reviewing its special event ordinances as part of an ongoing review that is mak-ing our ordinances more relevant to businesses and residents. For example, we updated what col-ors are allowed on signs several months ago.

To get a fl ier that includes a list of produce that will be fea-tured, see pictures of both the Ed-ible Arbor Trail and the fl edgling Missouri City Farmer’s Market, http://traction.typepad.com/mus-ings

For the fourth consecutive year, Kempner High School’s Health Science Technology II Program students have bro-ken Fort Bend County records for collecting the most units of blood during their annual Blood Drive, benefi tting St. Luke’s Hospital.

This year, the Kempner students, staff and parents reached a new record harvest for blood donations by col-lecting 442 units of blood

during an eight-hour period. That’s 55.25 units of blood per hour!

The annual blood drive is directed by Dr. Jeff Ricken, Health Science Technology II Program instructor.

Together, Ricken and pro-gram offi cers Greg Jackson, Stephanie Huyhn, Jill Palm-er, Roshan George, Santiago Garcia and Pauline Nguyen lead a successful campaign with food for donors, free t-

shirts and good music. For the past three years, the

students have been recognized with the White House Silver Eagle Award – the highest level of civic service honor that can be earned by young adults in our country.

In honor of this year’s achievement, the students will be honored by the City of Sugar Land Mayor and City Council Members in May.

FILM REVIEW: J. Edgar

By BARBARA FULENWIDERFor 2012 the Mazda3 four-

door sedan got a facelift and a more refi ned exterior and inte-rior. It also got the SKYACTIV fuel-saving and performance-oriented technologies, so can get an estimated 40 miles to the gallon in highway driving.

Redesigned for the 2010 model year, the refreshed 2012 Mazda3 receives an all-new SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine as well as the all-new SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmis-sion and all-new SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. The 2012 Maz-da3 with SKYACTIV deliv-ers 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 148 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm.

SKYACTIV-G will be the standard engine in all Mazda3 i Touring and Grand Touring models. Mated to a standard all-new SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission or optional all-new SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission, i Touring and Grand Touring trims will be available in either the sedan or hatchback body styles.

In addition to the SKY-ACTIV-G there’s Mazda3’s current MZR 2.0-liter dual-overhead-cam 16-valve four-cylinder engine, which is available only on i SV and Sport sedan models. The MZR 2.0-liter engine will be avail-able with the current fi ve-speed manual as standard equipment. Mazda3 i Sport models also will be available with the current fi ve-speed au-tomatic as an option.

With a fuel tank capac-ity of 14.5 gallons, the 2012 Mazda3 sedan with SKYAC-TIV TECHNOLOGY has the potential of a 540-mile range, with still a gallon of fuel re-maining. City mpg for the sedan version improves by 17 percent to 28 mpg. When equipped with the SKYAC-TIV-MT six-speed manual transmission, the sedan has an EPA-rated fuel economy of 27 city/39 highway.

The Mazda3 sedan with

the MZR 2.0-liter engine has an EPA fuel economy rating of 25 city/33 highway with the standard fi ve-speed manual transmission, and 24 city/33 highway with the optional fi ve-speed automatic transmission.

Also available on the 2012 Mazda3 is the MZR 2.5-liter engine. Alongside the SKY-ACTIV-G 2.0-liter, the MZR 2.5-liter is a technology power-house as well.

Available on the Touring and Grand Touring models only, it makes 167 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 168 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The MZR 2.5-liter engine is available with a stan-dard six-speed manual trans-mission or an optional fi ve-speed electronically-controlled automatic with manual shift control.

The body of the 2012 Maz-da3 has been reinforced for greater rigidity and models powered by SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engines are equipped with a drive control system that controls torque gen-eration to maintain a balance between engine output and the transmission gears.

All Mazda3s will continue to be equipped with numerous standard safety features. An optional feature available for 2012 models is a Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system that helps drivers avoid brushing up against another vehicle during lane changes and traffi c merg-

es. The Mazda3 I Touring four-door sedan with all standard equipment retails for $22,300. It’s peppy as Mazdas are, is fun to drive and provides a kind highway ride.

It also comes loaded with the new SKYACTIV engine, 16-inch wheels, moonroof, rear window defogger, variable intermittent front wipers, fi ve-passenger seating, tilt and tele-scopic steering column, leath-er-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power windows, door locks and mirrors.

Also, leather seats and door panels, eight-way power driv-er’s seat, heated front seats, two 120volt power outlets, four-wheel disc brakes, independent front and rear suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, halo-gen headlights, 60/40 split fold rear seat, 165 watt Bose audio system, stability control, trac-tion control, tire pressure moni-tor system and anti-theft engine immobilizer. Put more fun in your life – test drive the 2012 Mazda3.

Last week, I blamed Brian Grazer for producing “Tower Heist” because he was the big daddy of the movie so it had to be his fault. This week’s responsibility lies with Direc-tor Clint Eastwood because you can’t get any “bigger daddy” than Eastwood. And I would criticize Clint, but I don’t blaspheme and, quite frankly, I’m scared of him.

But if I had the guts to write the truth, I’d mention that Clint spent 90+ minutes get-ting the audience pointed in the right direction before my audience gave a hoot about J. Edgar Hoover as the long-term dictatorial director of the newly formed Federal Bureau of Investigation. I remember as a kid wanting to be a G-Man and carrying a machine gun and arresting bad guys like Baby Face Nelson and Machine Gun Kelly. The FBI under the big shadow of Hoover was a revered group of lawmen on the cutting edge of technique and technology due in large part to the myste-rious Hoover.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as J. Edgar and he is magnifi cent in spite of a lackluster script by Dustin Lance Black who also wrote “Milk.” You might remember that Sean Penn won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, so Leo must have been quick-

ly lured to this project that had the dynamic duo of Eastwood and Black. I saw this fi lm on 11-11-11 which just happened to be Leo’s 37th birthday. I don’t know what that means but I had to share.

I’m a huge fan of DiCaprio and thought he was robbed of an Oscar for his portrayal of Jack Dawson in “Titanic” (1997). That’s what happens when you play opposite Kate Winslet’s Rose. Leo is one of the giants of his generation; nominated twice for Best Ac-tor for “The Aviator” (2004) and “Blood Diamond” (2006). Will lightning strike and gold appear on Billy Crystal’s stage in the spring? Leo will probably be nominated but it will be strike three for him.

Eastwood beautifully cap-tured the essence of Hoover and the intricacies and in-trigue of the FBI for Hoover’s almost 50-year reign, but this movie lacked compassion and continuity. Too many fl ash-backs and fl ash forwards. The editing was peculiar and the story disjointed and unin-teresting.

As I stated, if I was criticiz-ing Eastwood, which I am not, the movie was boring for at least 90 minutes. After about an hour and half, DiCaprio’s J. Edgar fi nally connected with the audience and scored well in the last act. Finally.

A r m i e H a m -mer, age 25, played Clyde Tol-son who was H o o v e r ’ s second in c o m m a n d and most be-lieved him to be much more than H o o v e r ’ s conf idan t . E a s t w o o d s k i l l f u l l y pieced to-gether the Hoover/Tol-son story by making the h o m o s e x -ual aspect a balanced piece of the complicated man who never mar-ried and lived with his moth-er. Hammer’s performance is worthy of a nomination, but the competition for Best Sup-porting Actor is historically unpredictable so we shall wait and see.

The subject matter of this movie about a heavy-handed lawman that kept secret fi les on six US presidents and millions of innocent Americans seems to be a natural for a great mov-

ie, but Eastwood’s directorial gun did not have the right bul-lets; not that there’s anything wrong with that. Rock ‘n Roll.

Grade 79. Larry H.

PS: Brian Grazer was also a producer for “J. Edgar.” Grazer’s everywhere; and now he’s taken over as the producer of the 84th Academy Awards show.

The Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance held its 2011 Cel-ebration Ball on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Safari Texas Ranch in Richmond. The black-tie gala, which was presented by Kevin Patton State Farm and Legacy Ford, celebrated the relationships the Chamber has with its membership and the local business community.

Kevin Patton State Farm and Legacy Ford again cast the winning auction bid to present the 2012 version of the event, which is themed Cirque Du Chambre. An ensemble from the Lamar Consolidated High School Jazz Band performed during the cocktail hour, and the Texas Twisters entertained after the live auction. Gifts, plaque and a presentation were given to Sa-fari Texas Ranch owners Allison and Cassandra Wen, honoring them for their generosity and commitment to Fort Bend County businesses and non-profi t organizations. Outgoing Chamber Board Chair Kamal Ariss, JE Dunn Construction, also passed the Board gavel to incoming Chair Thomas J. Crayton, CPA.

Mia’s Closet is a nonprofi t organization run by mother daughter team Chelsea and Brenda Coffey.

Every school year, there’s a little girl who can’t help but be anxious about school starting. This little girl is embarrassed because she knows school starting means getting teased for clothes that are too small and worn out. Worst of all, Mommy doesn’t have the money to buy new ones. Mia’s Closet collects donations of brand new and gently used clothing so this little girl can come to a Mia’s Closet location or event and shop like the princess she really is.

Due to the generosity of donations received all year long, Mia’s Closet offers an array of unique shopping experiences for girls kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Throughout the year, the Mia’s Closet staff pulls together to present underprivileged girls with new and gently used cloth-ing free of charge.

Whether the Mia’s Closet space is permanent or a tempo-rary popup store, it is transformed into a beautiful princess boutique.

“Our goal is to see that each girl has the opportunity to ex-press themselves in a positive way through fashion, and leave with a boost in confi dence and self-esteem,” says Chelsea Cof-fey.

“Saddleup Texas Straw Poll” set for Jan. 12 to Jan. 14

Sugar Land resident K.P. George has decided to join the race for District 22 in Congress on the Democrat-ic Party ticket.

“As career politicians and Washington insiders continue to ignore citizens and make decisions that benefi t only their special in-terest and lobbyist friends, I have decided to run for U.S. Congress,” George said.

“As a middle-class citi-zen of District 22, I promise to never accept a penny of special interest money—so I can serve you, not lobby-ists.”

George said his experi-ences as a certifi ed fi nancial planner and money man-ager and his personal battle to achieve the American

Dream make him a perfect fi t to represent our com-munity in Congress dur-ing these tough economic times.

“Hardworking citizens are frustrated with politi-cal deadlock and inaction in Washington, and continue to bear the brunt of the con-sequences of bad policy,” George said.

“My 18 years of expe-rience in managing other peoples’ money has given me the skills to develop solid economic policy that will help put America back to work.”

“I am running for Con-gress because I want to help normal, everyday citi-zens rather than serve spe-cial interests and lobbyists on Capitol Hill. And that’s why I need your help.”

George fought impos-sible odds to leave the im-poverished, rural village in India where he was born and raised, and faced even steeper challenges after coming to America. Over the past 18 years here in America, he has learned the true value of hard-earned

money, a great education, and compassion for your neighbor.

As he campaigns to win the support of his neigh-bors, George will focus on the need to get the nation’s books back in the black, to improve education for our children, and to challenge the “business-as-usual” en-vironment in Washington, where the voices of special interests are drowning out the ordinary citizen.

The K.P. George Cam-paign is inviting all to a campaign kickoff fundrais-er on Nov. 15, at the Ragin Cajun Restaurant from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For more information, visit http://kp-george.com.
