ICE RESCUE TRAINER This course presents ice rescue training in a practical and efficient system, giving trainers the tools to build a competent and safe team. Successful Ice Rescue Trainer graduates return to their departments with a complete training system. With the purchase of student kits from Dive Rescue International, trainers will be able to conduct in-house ice rescue training for departmental personnel. This is a surface rescue program and does not involve diving.

TOPICS INCLUDE Teaching the Adult Learner • Preparation and Effective Presentation of the Ice Rescue Program • Testing and Evaluation of Students • Identifying and Evaluating Ice Strength and Formation • How Cold Affects a Victim • Equipment and Manpower Considerations • Scene Evaluation • Assessment of Risk/Benefit Factor • Ice Rescue Techniques

PREREQUISITES All candidates must be a member of a public safety agency, physically fit, at least 21 years of age, provide proof of current First Aid and CPR training, and submit an application. Application to the program does not guarantee admission to the program. Applications are available on the Dive Rescue International website. Students will be officially notified of their status after their application is reviewed. Completed applications must be received at Dive Rescue International no less than 3 weeks before start of class.

BE SURE TO BRING A U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) with a knife and whistle, adequate clothing for working outside, and pen and paper for taking notes. If the student has access to a cold water rescue suit or dry suit, they should bring it to class. It is advised that students bring a dry set of clothing

ICE DIVING OPERATIONS This course is Dive Rescue International’s renowned three day (24 hour) training program for certified divers and surface support personnel. Graduates will be able to plan and execute an emergency ice diving operation; select, evaluate and perform field maintenance on ice diving equipment; and dive safely under ice in order to complete a rescue/recovery mission. Participants will also be introduced to diving with full face masks. Successful completion of this program is measured in class participation, passing a final written exam and completing in-water skills. Ice Diving Operations includes skills transferable to diving in environments with overhead obstructions.

TOPICS INCLUDE Scuba Fatalities • Stressors, Diver Stress, Diver Response • Panic, Diver Panic, Diver Response • Management, Prevention, and Inoculation of Stress • Physiological and Psychological Rigor • Entanglement Protocol • Out Of Air Emergency Protocol • Problem Solving Underwater

PREREQUISITES All students must be a member of a public safety agency and at least 18 years of age. Students must read and complete a RSTC medical statement prior to attending class. Any diver answering yes to any contraindication must have the medical statement signed by a physician. Diving students must have proof of open water and Dive Rescue I certifications. This program is designed for personnel who are physically fit. Participants are encouraged to participate after successfully completing the IADRS Watermanship Test or testing to a fitness level of 13 MET (Metabolic Equivalents) or greater. Participants with aerobic fitness questions or concerns should consult their physician prior to in-water training.

BE SURE TO BRING All students must bring: Pen and paper for note-taking and sketching; clothing appropriate to long days outside in winter months; and diving students must provide their own equipment including exposure suit adequate for swimming pool and ice diving environments, scuba regulator: recently serviced and environmentally protected with alternate air source (i.e.: octopus, Air III, etc.), timing device, depth and submersible pressure gauges, BC with oral/power inflator, two tanks with current Hydro & VIP, mask, snorkel, fins, weight system and two cutting tools (knife, wire cutters, or trauma shears) swim suit, exposure suit, and goggles.
