Fort Crook IPMS/USA Scale Modeling Club NEXT MEETING Wednesday September 19 at 6:30 PM Meetings are held at the Nebraska NRD Headquarters located in West Omaha at 154 th & Giles Road September’s Meeting Will Feature a Special Presentation on the F-105 Thunderchief This month’s meeting will feature a guest speaker. IPMS/USA Fort Crook and Scott Sumsion chapter member Fred Hall. Fred will present a 40-minute seminar on F-105 Thunderchiefs in Vietnam. Fred was a F-105D crew chief in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict. Many of you know Fred is an avid long-time modeler and past President of IPMS/USA as well as one of the founding members of Lincoln’s Scott Sumsion IPMS/USA chapter.   • VALLEJOACRYLICSPROS–

    • Comes in several varieties. ModelColor,GameColor,&PanzerAcesareall thick paint designed for hand-painting. Model Air is a little bitthinnerbutstillworksgreatforhand-painting.

    • Comes in dropper bottles. Youmustuse a palate, and you must thin it(ThinnerMedium,Airbrushthinner,orwater).

    • Thisstuffisgreatforpaintingfigures,details,andpaintchips.

    CONS–• Not so great for doing hairspray

    chippingastheacrylicpolymertendstomakethepaintpeeloff insteadofchipaway.

    LIFECOLORACRYLICSPROS–

    • Great for airbrushing and colorselection.

    • Lifecolorpaintslayerverywell.Addalittle water while painting to creategradientsofcolor.

    • TheirRust&Dustsetisspectacular.• Worksgreatforthechippingeffect

    CONS–• ExpensivetobuyintheStates

    WhichAcrylicPaintBrandsAreForYou?Manymodelersuseacrylicpaints.Mostly,thisisbecausetheymaynotbeabletodealwiththeharshsmellsofenamelsorlacquers.Now,understandthe"acrylic"referstothebinderinthepaint.Thethinnermaybewater,alcohol,orevenlacquer.However,thebindingagent isanacrylicofsomesort.Differentbrandshaveadifferenttypeofacrylicbinder.Thus,eachhasacertainuse.

  • TAMIYAACRYLICSPROS–

    • Alcohol-based:theydryfasterandaremoredensethanotheracrylics

    • Thesearefantasticatairbrushing.• Works the best with the hairspray

    chippingeffect• YoucanuselacquerthinnerslikeMr.

    Leveling Thinner or even lacquerthinnertogetfantasticresults.

    CONS-Difficulttohand-paintparts

    AKINTERACTIVEACRYLICSPROS–

    • They seem to perform great at bothairbrushingandhand-painting.

    • Theiracrylicprimersperformwellandhavenosmell.

    • Add hematite beads (see below) tohelpagitatethepaint.

    MIGAMMOACRYLICSPROS–

    • Drieshardandairbrusheswell.• Paint in light, translucent layers for

    bestresults.• Neweryellow-capAmmopaintswork

    betterandhavesteelballagitators.• They also produce "crystal" paints

    that dry to look like glass (great fordials).

    • SimilartoVallejoinconsistency.• They do have the better flesh colors

    Ifyouhavenever triedweatheringonascalemodel, itmaybe thatneedlessmisgivingsare

    holdingyouback.Truthis,weatheringisnotreallythatdifficultandcanaddgreatrealismand

    "life"toastaticmodel,aswellastellingastory.Anotherlittleknownaspectisthatitcanactually

    hidesomemistakes,butatthesametimeitcouldemphasizethemaswell.Alotofcareshould

    betakenduringassemblyandalltheseamsandfitissuestakencareofearlyon.Takethetime

    togiveyourmodelathoroughinspectionwithagoodprimerandmakesureitisflawless.

    The foundation or surface of the model is very important, whether it's a ship, aircraft,

    spacecraft, tankor train,most flawswill showup laterwhen it's too late! Thepainton the

    surfaceofyourmodelwillbegettingalotofwearandtearduringtheweatheringprocessand

    needsthesametreatmentasifitweregoingtobedisplayedas"factoryfresh."

  • Someofthematerialsyouwillfindveryusefulforweatheringincludethefollowing:

    Some of the commonly used

    techniques in weathering scale

    models are washes; dry-bushing,

    using pastel chalks, airbrush

    hazing and fading, and paint

    chipping with Prisma color silver

    pencils.Startbygivingyourmodel

    asmoothcoatofprimer, Iwould

    recommend Tamiya Fine Surface

    Primer, Mr Surfacer Primer or

    Touch'nToneautomotiveprimer,

    andinspectthesurfacesforflaws.

    Thepaintusedonyourmodelisamatterofpreference,butIwouldhighlyrecommendacrylics.

    TamiyaandVallejoareexcellentchoicesforvehicles.Theyareresistanttomostharshchemicals

    foundinvariousthinners,willeliminatetheriskofliftingthepaint,andareverypermanentas

    well.Theweatheringprocessonyourmodelissubjecttoalotofabuse;acrylicsaretoughand

    dry toaperfectmatte finish. There really isnoneed fora clear varnishwhenusingacrylics

    (anotherbonus!)however,itdoesn'thurttoaddaclearcoatifdesired,especiallysinceitwill

    helptocorrectunintentionalglossareasandgiveyouauniformsurfaceonyourmodelpriorto

    weathering. If youuse anoil-basedpaint such as lacquer or enamel, itwill benecessary to

    overcoatyourmodelwithanacrylicmattevarnishtoprotectthepaintunderneath.

  • Anairbrushisthetoolofchoiceforthebasecoatandcanbeusedformuchoftheweathering

    procedure.Andfinally,besuretoletthepaintdrythoroughlybeforeweathering.Thenicething

    aboutacrylicsisyoucanbeginthenextday,whereaswithanoil-basedpaint,itcantakeupto

    threedaystofullycure.

    There are basically five steps to weathering a model. Pastel chalks, washes, (careful) dry

    brushing,fading,andpaintchipping(scratchesfallintothiscategoryaswell)butthatisamatter

    ofpreference.Let'sstartwithawashofartist'soilpaints.Thefollowingwouldworkgreatona

    militaryvehicle,tank,jeep,trucketc.

    AddingWash

    Brushmineralspiritsovertheentiremodeltobreakupsurfacetension,andthenmixupsome

    oilpainttotheconsistencyofdirtythinner.BurntUmber,VanDykeBrown,andapinchofblack

  • withmineralspirits,brushovertheentiresurface,andletthewashflowintoallthecrevicesand

    corners.Bytheway,mineralspiritsisagoodchoiceforthinner,asitdriesabitmoreflatthan

    artiststurpentine(besidesturpentinehasanintensesmell!).Excesswashcanbewipedoffwith

    asoftrag,preferablyalintfreeone.Youwillbeamazedathowallthedetail"pops"outwith

    thisfirststep!Areasthatyouwouldliketoseeaccentuatedneedamoreconcentratedheavier

    wash. Keep this up until you get the look you're after. Another goodproduct forwashes is

    "WeatheringWash"byProModeler,thisiswaterbasedandworksgreat!Andasabonusitis

    nontoxic.

    AddingHighlights

    Nowthatwehavethedetailon

    themodelmoredefined, let's

    move on to highlighting. The

    best approach for this is to

    startbygivingthemodelalight

    over-spray of the base color

    slightly lightened using an

    airbrush. Concentrate on the

    uppersurfaceswheresunlight

    would bemost prevalent and

    try to keep the airbrush

    pointed at the model in the

    directionthelightwouldhitthesurface.Youwillgetaverysmooth,somewhattransparentcoat

    ofpaintallowingthebasecolortosubtlyshowthrough.Nowit'stimetodefineraiseddetail

    withacareful,lightwhiskingusinganalmostdrybrush.Mixupsomeartistsoilsalittlelighter

    than your base acrylic color. Pick some up on your brush, a (#2 or #4 red sables are very

    appropriatesizesforgeneraluse)andremovemostofthepaintonaragortowel.Toomuch

    paintwillleaveundesiredpatchesandheavyresidue.Theideaistograduallybuildupthehigh

    lights;subtletyisthekeyforthisstep.

  • AddingPastelChalksTheuseofpastelchalksprovidesadelicateweatheringeffectsimilartotheeffectofanairbrush.

    Pastelsareavailableatartsupplyshopsandsomecraftstores,lookforsoftpastels,notthehard

    kind.Colorsyouneedforweatheringareburntumber,burntsienna,black,rawumber,yellow

    ochre,andwhite.Startbygrindingsomepastelsonapieceofsandpaper,theycaneasilybe

    mixedwithothercolorsandthenappliedwithasoftbrush.Theuseofpastelsforcornersand

    crevicesisideal,andnothingreallysimulatesdustbetterthanpastels,sinceitisessentiallydust!

    Simply apply and blow off the excess. The only drawback of pastels is they are not very

    permanent.Thesolutionafterallapplicationsaredoneisagoodclearmattevarnishsuchas

    DullcotebyTestors,orVallejomattevarnish.

    PaintChipping

    Andlastlypaintchipping.Thisstepisofamatterofchoicebythemodeler,butmostmilitary

    vehiclesaremadeoutofmetalandaresubject towearandchipping.Thereareacoupleof

    methodsyoucanuseforthisstepsuchasmixingatoneddownsilverpaintlikesilvermixedwith

    gunmetal, or mixing in some burnt

    umber or raw umber oil paint. Then

    gentlystippleanalmostdrybrushon

    edges, and corners etc. A very fine

    brush can also be used to apply

    various scrapes and wear. Another

    way is the use of a Prismacolor, or

    similar silver pencil. These are

    availableincraftorartsupplystores.

    Nextgentlyapplyscrapesandchipsto

    edges and various raised areas. To

    finishairbrushorspraywithanaerosolcansomeTestorsorModelMasterflatclearlacquerto

    eveneverythingout.Vallejomattevarnish is alsoexcellent.Awordonaircraftor spaceship

    models,thewearandtearwouldnotbeasexcessiveasonatankortruck,andneedsmore

    restraintduringtheabovementionedprocess.

  • WorkingWithClearParts

    Workingwiththeclearpartsofaplasticmodelaircraftorvehiclecanbeveryfrustratingattimes.

    Scratches,gluefoggingandpaintoversprayarejustsomeoftheproblemsyoucanencounter

    withthataircraftcanopyorcarwindshieldpiece.Hereareafewtipsforworkingwiththeclear

    plasticpiecesofanyscalemodelkit.

    Attachingacanopyorclearpiece:Whiteglueistheusualmethodforsimplyattachingtheclear

    piecetotherestofthemodel.Itdoesn’tmartheclearplasticanditwilldryclear.Itisalsowater

    solublesoadamptowelcanwipe

    upexcessbeforeitdries.Youcan

    getthisglueanywhere.

    Lots of detail sets in photo-

    etched metal are available to

    detail canopiesandwindshields.

    So now the problem becomes

    gluing metal to the inside of a

    clear piece without marring or

    fogging. For this step I would

    strongly recommend watch

    crystalcement.Thiscementdries

    clearand isslightlyflexible. It’smainlyusedby jewelerstocementtheclearcrystal faceson

    wristwatches.Thisglueishardertoobtain,butyoushouldbeabletofinditatajeweler’ssupply

    houseorWebsite.

    FixingScratches:First,getsome“wetanddry”sandpaperinavarietyofgradesfrommedium

    tosuperfine.Startwithabout600gradeandgentlysandthepieceprogressivelyusingfiner

    grades(800,1000,1200,2000).Thesheetsareavailableinsuperfinegritsatyourfavoritehobby

    shoporcraftstore.Remembertokeeptheareayouaresandinglubricatedwithwatersothe

    debrisdoesnotscratchfurther,ideallydothesandingunderarunningwatertap.Continuethis

    processuntilyoucannotseeanyscratcheswhenyoudrythepart.

  • Nexttheclearpiecewillneedtobepolishedwithahighqualityplasticormetalpolish.I like

    BlueMagicorNovusbutthereareseveralbrandsyoucanchoosefrom.Applyandpolishusing

    asoftcleancottonclothlikeawhitet-shirt.Polishuntilyougetaniceshine.

    CoatingtheClearPiece:Finallytoenhanceandprotecttheglosspieceitcanbecoatedwith

    clearacrylicfloorpolish(Future).Washanddryyourclearpartanddipitinthefloorpolishand

    allowthepolishtocoattheplasticpiece.Lightlytouchthecornerofapapertoweltoanyexcess

    polishanditwilldrawitoff.Letitdryundisturbedonacleansurface.Theclearfloorpolishwill

    flowintoanyfinitescratchesleftfromthesandingandpolishing.Itwillalsokeeptheclearpiece

    fromfoggingwhenusedwithsuperglue.
