MEMBERSHIP REPORT

NCO and Soldier of the Year, 2013

Headquarters, US Army Cadet Command and Fort Knox just announced the winners of this year’s competition. Congratulations to SSG Christopher Pennington and SPC Dean Chanliongco for selec-tion as NCO and Soldier of the Year, respectively. The Chapter will present each a framed AUSA Na-tional Certificate of Commendation, a 3-Year AUSA Membership and a President’s Excellence Coin. Subject to the availability of funds, the Chapter plans to take both Soldiers to AUSA’s An-nual Meeting to be held in Washington, DC in Oc-tober 2013.

High School Junior ROTC

The Chapter supported seven high schools this spring with AUSA JROTC medal/ribbon sets for award to top JROTC cadets.

Leadership Training Course

The Chapter will support seven LTC graduations this summer with a framed AUSA Certificate of Commendation and a President’s Excellence Coin for award to the top cadet in each graduating class.

Adopt-A-Platoon

The Chapter has partnered with Pink Camo (a Corporate Member) requesting to adopt-a-platoon of the 3BCT/1st Infantry Division during its de-ployment to Afghanistan.

As an aside, every year, this time of year we lose friends here at Fort Knox due to regular transfers and reassignments.

We are sad to see our good friends leave and as-sure them that they will be missed but, look for-ward to making new friends as those opportuni-ties arise.

One loss in particular, Col Tom Kallman, ARRTC Commander was selected for promotion to Briga-dier General and will soon be leaving for his new post. He’ll be greatly missed; a real leader-doer.

Best to all in their new assignments.

A field of 117 military and civilian golfers teed off at Noon in the 18 hole Scramble format tournament. The win-ning foursome of Kerry Tooley, Rick Skoog, Bob Burke and Richard Powers came in with a score of 56. Second place went to the team of Ryan Blas, SGM Luther Legg, William Garcia and Jim Pope with a score of 61 and Third Place was taken by the team of Nate Johnson, Erik Willis, Adam Full and William Scott who also carded a score of 61 but was beaten in a scorecard playoff for Second Place. Team prizes were also awarded for the 10th, 15th, 20th and last place teams in addition to Closest to the Pin prizes on 3-Par holes and longest drives for the ladies and the men.

This year’s tournament had a record number of 53 Corporate Cash Sponsors resulting in net proceeds for the local AUSA Chapter of over $20,000.00. The income from each year’s tournament provides operating capital for the local AUSA Chapter to recognize and provide awards for Fort Knox’s outstanding soldiers throughout the year. Special thanks go out to the Lusk Group for underwriting the cost of the first 100 rounds of golf for the second year in a row and our Hole in One Sponsors, The Swope Family of Dealerships and Knox Ford. See full list of sponsors later in the newsletter.

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES

HOORAY FOR HEROES

On May 18, 2013 the communities sur-rounding Ft. Knox joined with the Ft. Knox Chapter of AUSA in celebrating the eighth annual Hooray for Heroes. As in past years, Hooray for Heroes was a free day of fun, food and entertainment spe-cifically dedicated to soldiers and their families. There were inflatables, model railroading, and horseback riding for the kids, a full backyard picnic meal for all including burgers, hot dogs, drinks, chips, homemade cookies and ice cream. Daytime entertainment was provided by the Wulfe Brothers and the country music group featuring Olivia Henkin. Over 3000 people enjoyed the day.

In the evening Navy Federal Credit Un-ion sponsored a WW2 USO type program featuring the 113th Army Band and pro-fessional tribute teams, The Ultimate Abbott and Costello Tribute Show and an Andrews Sisters group, Ladies for Lib-erty. MG Jeff Smith, Commanding Gen-eral of the US Army Cadet Command and Ft. Knox spoke and presented his personal coin to 14 WWII veterans who attended with their families. Salutes were extended to all veterans and branches of the military. Work has al-ready begun for next year's Hooray for Heroes which will be on May 17, 2014.

Community Partnership Dinner CAR Gold Neighbor Award Program

On June 4, 2013 several chapter officers and members attended the Community Partnership Dinner hosted by Fort Knox. A part of that dinner was the presentation of the Gold Neighbor Award. This award is presented annually tocommunity members who have distinguishedthemselves by providing exceptional support to Fort Knox and enhancing the quality of life for Soldiers and their Families.”

Fort Knox Chapter, AUSA is proud to announce that past chapter president Gene Gudenkauf and wife Erika were presented this award to include a framed certificate, a gold award and their names engraved on the Gold Neighbor Award plaque posted in the Fort Knox visitor’s center.

The Gudenkauf’s are always available to help in any way to support Soldiers as is noted in the below comments extracted from the warrant:

“If you’re a leader on Fort Knox who’s served here longer than a year, chances are that you know Gene and Erika Gudenkauf. When you talk of people who are always looking at how to benefit Soldiers and support Army Families – they are it. Both Gene and Erika have jobs, but you still see at least one of them at nearly every installation-level event because they have dedicated their lives to Soldiers. In fact, this is an excellent example of a couple who continues to “serve” after their time in the military, and they are to be commended for the example they set for others.”

“Gene always has ideas on events and activities to pay honor to our military. Those ideas include arranging for the payment of the flowers thatare presented to the spouse of the commanding general at the installation change of command ceremony to identifying a way to bring the Fort Knox community closer together by leading the planning for an installation-wide ball. Gene is always thinking about what he can do next tohelp Fort Knox.”

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES (continued)

“Likewise, Erika has worked tirelessly tohelp with fundraising efforts that feed into the Fort Knox community chest – resulting in community grants and scholarship funds that have totaled in the tens of thousands of dollars. She tapped into her business background and network to contribute to this noble cause and provide the Fort Knox community a much appreciated service.” “Simply put, Gene and Erika live the Army Value of selfless service each and every day, and we thank them for that. Con-gratulations to the Gudenkauf’s for being selected as 2013 Gold Neighbors!”

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Elizabethtown Mayor Tim C. Walker. Mayor Walker was a great leader, mentor, businessman and friend. He strongly supported our soldiers and the Ft. Knox community. He led our community with humility, vision and compassion. The AUSA family is saddened by his loss and he will be deeply missed.
