1 Introduction This Convention Guide is deliberately taking a
simplified approach to presenting our
convention material. It is designed to be a
“living” document that grows as convention
activities are finalized. We are making it
available on our convention website for your
review at any time. When you arrive at the
convention in Fort Wayne, you will have been
able to see our convention program
beforehand. The issue date below will be
updated for each version of this guide.
1.1 Maps Hotel maps are included in this guide. Maps for
layout tours will be available at the registration
desk. Maps for most prototype tours will not
be supplied; our transportation service will
ensure all tour participants arrive (and leave)
the properties at the same time. There is no
private parking at these facilities; DO NOT plan
to drive yourself.
1.2 Planner Use the following planner as a quick reference
for your favorite activities.

2 Welcome
2.1 North Central Region On behalf of the North Central Region, NMRA, welcome to Fort Wayne Rails 2015. This book is your
passport to one great weekend of model railroading adventures! I’ve greatly enjoyed past regional
conventions hosted by Division 3 and this one promises to uphold their tradition. The schedule is packed
with clinics, layout tours, and operating sessions. Fort Wayne conventions have always featured a terrific
selection of prototype tours, and this year is no exception. In addition, you’ll find lots of other activities
around the convention hotel where you can reconnect with old friends from around the NCR and make
new ones as well. This year will mark the introduction of our new Model Showcase which will provide an
opportunity for members to display their model railroad projects as well as interact with other modelers
and discover new ideas and techniques. Don’t forget to join us at the Sunday morning Awards Brunch and
Annual Membership Meeting where you can learn what’s going on in the NCR, ask questions, and offer
suggestions. This is your organization and your convention, so jump in, get involved, and have fun!
See ya on down the line,
Dave McMullian, President, NCR
2.2 Division 3 Welcome to Fort Wayne Rails 2015. Fort Wayne has a railroad history dating from 1852, when the first
locomotive was brought here by canal boat. It was used in the construction of the rail line eastward; the
first train arrived on October 31, 1854. Continued construction connected the city to Chicago and other
points west. Fort Wayne became the home of many railroad shops. The best known was the Pittsburgh,
Fort Wayne, and Chicago Railway shops (later the Pennsylvania). At the turn of the century, there were
a dozen rail lines with 200 trains. Today, there are two companies and good traffic (not 200 though). In
fact, the elevated route of the Nickel Plate (now Norfolk Southern) is on the canal bed just north of the
central business district.
Recognizing our rail heritage, our convention logo represents the prototype routes through the central
part of Fort Wayne. Our title Fort Wayne Rails 2015 invites you to tour our prototype properties (safely, of course) and build many clinic projects, friendships, and memories.

2.3 Courtesies Here are some courtesies we hope you will observe to ensure the convention is an enjoyable event for
all. Please wear your badge at all times. Please do not “bounce” from clinic to clinic. Once you are
seated, please stay for the entire presentation. Please be respectful of the clinician’s presentation and
refrain from speaking to others. Save your questions until the end unless invited to do otherwise.
When viewing items in the showcase, contest, or silent auction room, do not touch the models or
photos. When the contest committee is judging the entries, please do not enter the room unless
necessary. While on layout and prototype tours, be respectful of your host and follow any rules in place
as befits a courteous host.

3.5 Model Showcase / Contest NCR President Dave McMullian reported in the Spring 2015 HotBox newsletter that the NCR board
recently had a long discussion regarding model contests. To summarize, the low participation level is an
issue of concern. The board concluded that we need to try something different, and we are going to
start at Fort Wayne Rails 2015. Instead of a model contest, we are going to focus on a
Model Showcase. The emphasis is on sharing, not competing; there are no restrictions
on what you display as long as it relates to model railroading. We have arranged for a large room for
the showcase and other activities, which will ensure plenty of access to view the models and to interact
with their builders.
Now what about photos? We are leaving the photo contest in place, so there will be the usual entry
categories and judging. Also if desired, there will be judging for Achievement Program points for the
showcase models.
The Model Showcase and Contest will be located in the Auburn, Cord, and Duesenburg Rooms.
3.6 Silent Auction The Silent Auction will be located in the Auburn, Cord, and Duesenburg Rooms.

4.1 Friday October 30 Friday, October 30, 2015
9:00 AM to 10:30 AM
St. Mary’s: Using Track Warrants on the Blackhawk Lines
Presented by: Bob Blake Description: Modern dispatching combined
with radio communication directly to the train crew meant that precisely-copied train orders could be replaced with track warrants which were essentially check box train orders. This clinic explains how warrants are used to control train movement on the 1990’s based Blackhawk Lines.
Maumee: Running Cattle [and other beasts] Presented by: Dan Lewis Description: The procedures for moving
livestock on prototype railroads were a fascinating part of railroading in steam to diesel transition. The rolling stock was
Friday, October 30, 2015
unique; special rules governed the movements; and the attendant structures at both ranch, farm, and stockyard were definitely one-of-a-kind. This clinic will look at all these features plus some tips on modeling them.
St. Joe: Selective Compression: Albany, New York: An Example of Prototype Layout Design and Operation
Presented by: Alan Bell Description: Follow along as Alan explains his
researching of the New York Central System Railroad operating at Albany, New York circa 1948-1952. Using prototype information, Alan has recreated both the physical plant and the passenger / freight operation. This clinic provides an excellent overview of his layout featured during the layout tour portion of the convention.
Marquis: Open Presented by: Description:
10:30 AM to 12:00 PM
St. Mary’s: Modeling Traction Era Gas Stations
Presented by: Bob Blake Description: If you are modeling the
transition era, this clinic will help you accurately capture the flavor and details of gas stations in AnyTown USA.
Maumee: Norfolk Southern in Fort Wayne Presented by: Bruce Carpenter Description: This discussion will be an open
forum starting with a brief overview of NS operations in and around Fort Wayne, the interchanges, Triple Crown, local facilities, etc. Bruce will then respond to questions.
St. Joe: Auto Industry – A Prototype You Can Model
Presented by: Tim Fisher Description: Railroads support the auto
industry in North America by shipping components through the supply chain to
Convention Guide: Fort Wayne Rails 2015 Issue date: October 27, 2015 Page: 7
Friday, October 30, 2015
final assembly and then by delivering finished vehicles to market. About 10% of modern rail shipments are in support of the auto industry. Vehicle annual volumes up to 18 million for the US demonstrate that this is a BIG operation. Maybe some of this traffic should be crossing your railroad.
Marquis: Open Presented by: Description:
1:00 PM to 2:30 PM
St. Mary’s: Operation on a Small Layout Presented by: Dave Capron Description: This clinic will show how you can
have full operations on a small room-size layout just like the full-size basement empires with more operators than you have imagined. Yes, you and your layout can be part of a round-robin group.
Maumee: NYC Jet Train Presented by: Craig Berndt Description: Will be repeated.
St. Joe: Wabash Railroad Mixed Train – the Prototype and a Model
Presented by: Victor Baird Description: This clinic starts with a brief
history of mixed trains in North America and moves to the Wabash RR Gary Local Mixed. Victor then discusses building motive power and a combine for his Indianapolis Branch Mixed.
Will be repeated.
Marquis: Detail Weathering Clinic Presented by: Chris Thompson Fee: $5 per participant; one time only. Bring: Model(s) to weather; Photo(s) of
prototype. Note: This is not a weathering service; it is hands-on.
Description: Join nationally-recognized weathering expert Chris Thompson to learn weathering techniques to make your rolling stock and locomotives look like the prototype. Chris will demonstrate airbrush techniques that turn out-of-the-box kits into models of rolling stock found on the
Friday, October 30, 2015
mainline. With Chris' guidance, participants will learn these techniques first-hand. Bring one, or several of your own models to weather. Also bring a photo(s) of a prototype you wish to model. Clinic runs continuously with a $5 material fee per participant (good for the entire convention). Will be continued.
2:30 PM to 4:00 PM
St. Mary’s: Another Way to Build a Helix Presented by: Chuck Hart Description: Chuck discusses how to build a
helix using 1/8 inch thick Masonite. Using standard wood glue and clamps, this method will allow the finished roadbed to be ¼ inch thick versus ½ inch or thicker plywood. This results in a reduced grade of the helix loops with the same amount of height gained. Benefits of this design are: 1) adjustments for height between the loops, 2) smooth grade transitions, and 3) the ability to create superelevation.
Will be repeated.
Maumee: NYC Jet Train Presented by: Craig Berndt Description: Repeat of Friday 1:00 PM.
St. Joe: Modeling a Large Interlocking Presented by: Victor Baird Description: This presentation is a discussion
of the prototype concepts and the model adaptations for the author’s freelanced Fort Wayne Union Junction layout. Topics include: signals; electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic infrastructure; scratchbuilt tower; and working tower board.
Will be repeated.
Marquis: Detail Weathering Clinic Presented by: Chris Thompson Fee: $5 per participant; one time only. Bring: Model(s) to weather; Photo(s) of
prototype. Note: This is not a weathering service; it is hands-on.
Description: Continuation of 1:00 session.

4:00 PM to 5:30 PM
St. Mary’s: Open Presented by: Description:
Maumee: Lessons Learned Modeling The Nashville Road
Presented by: Andy Keeney Description: Join Andy Keeney as he
overviews the numerous techniques developed, perfected, and (even some) discarded during the many years constructing and operating The Nashville Road. Andy's layout is a large, well-constructed, multi-level HO railroad featuring 15 scale miles of track. First generation diesels ply the mainline pulling freight and passenger service through multiple towns, cities, and the countryside. The Nashville Road is a nationally-recognized layout.
Will be repeated.
St. Joe: Modeling Passenger Bridge Crossing the Hudson River at Albany
Presented by: Alan Bell Description: Alan explains his journey in the
research of the Baltimore style truss bridge utilized on the eastern portion of the New York Central System. Alan explains the multiple sources of engineering information available to modelers and explains the engineering details of the bridge's design. This clinic provides an excellent overview of his layout featured during the layout tour portion of the convention.
Marquis: Detail Weathering Clinic Presented by: Chris Thompson Fee: $5 per participant; one time only. Bring: Model(s) to weather; Photo(s) of
prototype. Note: This is not a weathering service; it is hands-on.

In other words, just about everything a modeler wants to know about tank cars.
Maumee: Layout Planning – The Kirkwood Cutoff
Presented by: Bob Blake Description: This clinic describes the planning
for this 11-mile MoPac industrial branch in St. Louis. This branch is generic enough that it could be adapted to any other railroad in any part of the country, and nearly any era. It could be built as a full basement, multi-level layout, or portions could be adapted to a small shelf switching layout. Do not skip this one just because you are not a MoPac or St. Louis modeler.
St. Joe: Introduction to 3D Printing Presented by: Kyle Coble Description: Kyle will discuss the basics of 3D
printing and some of the ways he has used it in model railroading. He will demonstrate how to build a car in sketchup and submit it to a printer.
Marquis: Detail Weathering Clinic Presented by: Chris Thompson Fee: $5 per participant; one time only. Bring: Model(s) to weather; Photo(s) of
prototype. Note: This is not a weathering service; it is hands on.

St. Mary’s: Junctions, Interchanges, and Diamonds for your Model Railroad
Presented by: Rich Mahaney Description: While looking at real railroad
junctions, interchanges, and diamonds, Rich discusses how they can be modeled. These track features can allow more rail traffic, the use of other railroad equipment, and some interesting operations. If a modeler likes a number of railroads, this is a solution to allow the many different railroads to operate on a single layout. Several examples from different model railroads are shown as part of this presentation.
Maumee: FWRHS – NKP 765 and Headwaters Junction
Presented by: Kelly Lynch Description:
St. Joe: Lessons Learned Modeling The Nashville Road
