Engineering Solutions for Corrosion in Oil and Gas Applications

Milan (Italy), November 14th - 17th, 1989

From time to time the U.S.-based National Association of Corrosion Engineers has organised conferences in Europe, reflecting the significant number of members that it has in that part of the world. It plans to do so again addressing the nature of corrosion problems in the oil and gas indus- tries and, particularly, practical engineering methods for solving these problems. Among the focus areas will be:

1. Materials selection for sour service 2. Pipeline coatings 3. Cathodic protection of off-shore structures 4. The use of inhibitors for corrosion control 5. Applications of non-metallics and coatings in oilfield services.

Presentations by international leaders in oilfield corrosion engineering, panel discussions and workshops will be included.

Roy W. Tess Award in Coatings

1989:

The officers and Award Committee of the Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) of the American Chemical Society are extremely pleased to announce that the recipient of the 1989 Roy W. Tess Award in Coatings is Dr. Theodore Provder of the Glidden Company, a subsidiary of ICI Paints. This award, established to recognise outstanding contributions in the fields of coatings science, technology and engineering, is given to Dr. Provder in acknowledgement of his significant achievements in a variety of areas, including particle size distribution anal- ysis, size exclusion chromatography, polymer and coatings characterisation, the chemistry and physics of cure and the application of computer technol- ogy to R and D modelling. Through over eighty journal publications and three patents, he has firmly established his reputation as a seminal thinker in the fields of coatings science and technology, and the body of work which he has created over the length of his distinguished career has established him as a key innovator in the industry. Dr. Provder, who graduated from the University of Miami and received his doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, was the 1987 Mattiello Lecturer at the Annual Meeting of the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology, and is Past-Chairman of the Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering Division (PMSE) of the American Chemical Society. In 1983, he was named Principal Scientist of the Glidden Company, and received Glidden’s ‘Scien- tific and Technical Achievement’ Award in 1977, and the ‘Award for Tech-

nical Excellence’ in 1981 and again in 1987. Dr. Provder is an internationally- known lecturer, and has chaired numerous national scientific meetings, resulting in his six edited books. Dr. Provder will be presented the Tess Award at the 198th Meeting of the ACS, September 10th - 15th, 1989, in Miami Beach, where both a symposium and a reception, co-sponsored by the Shell Development Company and the Glidden Company, will be held in his honour.

1990:

The American Chemical Society’s Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) seeks nominations for the Roy W. Tess Award in Coatings. This award, for $ 1,000, will be presented at the 200th meeting of the ACS, August 26th - 31st, 1990, in Washington D.C. This major award, which recognises outstanding individual achievements and note- worthy contributions to coatings science, technology and engineering, con- firms PMSE’s long-standing and continuing support and dedication to excellence in the coatings field. The Tess Award is chaired by George R. Pilcher (Hanna Chemical Coatings Corp.) and the distinguished members of the Nominating Committee are :

Dr. Richard J. Himics (Daniel Products Company) Prof. Taki J. Anagnostou (Eastern Michigan University) Prof. Charles E. Hoyle (University of Southern Mississippi) Dr. Clifford K. Schoff (PPG Industries, Inc.) Dr. Theodore Provder (Glidden Company)

National Seminar on Advances in Surface Coatings and their Applications

Kanpur (India) December 9th, lOth, 1989

This seminar, organised by the Oil Technologists’ Association of India (Central Zone) is to take place at the Harcourt Butler Technological Insti- tute in Kanpur.

Objectives The recent scientific and technological advances taking place in the

front-line of priorities viz. space research, naval environment, nuclear research, electronics etc. and the changing trend in marketing of general consumer products have challenged the modern paint industry. The require- ments of work environments and application techniques are so varied, that they have resulted in renewed interest in the area of advances in surface coat- ings and their applications. This seminar will provide the latest information on the status of the development in surface coatings and their applications. It will be an effort to provide an effective forum to the engineers, technolo- gists and researchers at the time when the paint industry is to prove its worth in meeting the challenges posed by areas of national priority.
