The Forty Red Bangles Story

“The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination.”- Don Williams Jr., Author

My journey began in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia, where I met my husband, the eldest son in a traditional Rajasthani family in India. After our three crazy weddings, I found myself in Jodhpur, being delighted and enticed by its history and culture whilst grappling with the nuances of conventional family life in Rajasthan. My journey then took me to Mumbai, a bustling metropolis, heaving with masses of people all living on just a dream. Survival here was a monumental task, success depending solely on the ability to adjust and evolve. Throughout this journey of self discovery, I have also discovered a land rich in extremes of tradition and modernity, yet with a welcoming heart and a generous spirit.

For an Indian bride, a mark of her newly-wed status is her forty red and white bangles, similar in concept to the wedding ring. Traditionally placed on the bride’s wrists by the maternal uncle, these bangles or ‘chuda’ are often sported for months after the wedding as a symbol of luck and safety. For me, they came to represent the connection between my past and my future, and all the joys and tribulations that fnally led me to the place I call home. Out of this experience was born the Forty Red Bangles label; my way to connect to my roots, discover my identity and explore all the wonderful gifts it has to offer.

The next step of this journey has led my family and I to Singapore, from where we look at things from a global perspective. Here, we have now created our home and a base for the future of Forty Red Bangles.

-Ramona Saboo, Director

About the Forty Red Bangles Label

The Forty Red Bangles label celebrates extraordinary life in everyday India. It is about making a connection and fnding a little piece of this magical land to call one’s own. We have searched far and wide for that special something- keepsakes, clothing, accessories and home-wares, each crafted lovingly by hand, each with a story as unique as those of the people who come to own them. All our products are a marriage of sustainbility and design.

The brand is a fusion of ethnicity and modernism, drawing upon the colour palette reminiscent of India’s art, streets and spices; translating into an eclectic range. Each piece is handcrafted and personality-flled; targeted towards strong individuals, drawn to something different. Each piece pays homage to the earth; incorporating ecological elements into its design and construction.

Forty Red Bangles also reaches out to local designers and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) to produce one-of-a-kind items for yourself, your loved ones and your home. This initiative enables such undiscovered talent to reach new markets whilst supporting their causes of community development and achieving a sustainable means of livelihood.

About the Four Red Bangles Label

Four Red Bangles is our junior label, created around the continuation of the story with the birth of Ramona's daughter. With an Australian-born Indian mother and Indian father, she has a unique identity that is an amalgamation of both cultures; yet, brought up in Mumbai, it is the only home she knows and loves. It is through her eyes and experiences that we take inspiration for the Four Red Bangles collections.

Remember the time when random bits of junk collected from the outdoors were precious treasures, cherished and admired? When a small square of grandma’s sari was all that was needed to fall into a delightful slumber? When shiny cars and colorful clothes captivated us with wonder? It is with this in mind, that we created a line of fun and playful products especially for kids. Comfy clothes waiting to be dirtied in a mud fght, toys waiting to be companions on numerous adventures and trinkets to capture a child’s imagination. The entire range is made from only organic materials and natural dyes- stuff that’s actually health-friendly. We take care of the worry so the little ones can go ahead and play.

‘From India with Love’ 2011-2012

“A journey is best measured in friends rather than miles”- Tim Cahill, Writer

India is a land of extremes. Its cities, glistening capitals of glass towers, fast cars and consumer-driven lives, a stark contrast to the rest of the country with its quiet villages and quaint towns- places that time seems to have forgotten. Although many have marveled at the vibrant history and culture of India, it is in its people that one finds the true heart of the country. Hard-working, hospitable and beyond helpful, every inhabitant has tales to tell. And in a country with over 1.5 billion inhabitants, there are many connections to be made and stories to be told. Our ‘From India with Love’ collection hopes to introduce some of these individuals and tell their tales through a compilation of exclusive, handmade products guaranteed to play an important part in their owners’ story. The collection includes traditionally block-printed tunics, loungewear, all natural candles and jewelry handcrafted from up-cycled saris.

‘Banaasa + Baisa’ Collection 2013-2014

The Forty Red Bangles journey takes a regal turn with the creation of it's latest collection. Named for the respectful terms of endearment given to a Rajput lord and lady, the collection captures the paradoxical simple elegance and understated opulence of Rajasthani royalty. Pure, creamy malai cotton is moulded into both free-flowing and impeccably structured shapes to form the basis of the collection. Thoughtful detailing has been built into the fabric itself for added richness and the ancient art of Dabu printing lends a rustic charm with splashes of color. The prints themselves are reminiscent of intricately carved jaali windows overlooking the city and the interlocked heart pattern tells a story of never-ending romance. Subtle and serene, these monochromatic pieces are a rejuvenated celebration of wardrobe staples, guaranteed to become timeless classics.

Community Partners

We firmly believe that coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success. It is because of this that we seek out like-minded organizations to partner with for community development, women's empowerment and environmental protection. Below are a few of our community partners:

Sambhali TrustLike an oasis in the vast deserts of Rajashtan, the Sambhali trust offers a lifeline to the women of Jodhpur. Govind Singh Rathore first developed the idea for a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those members of Rajasthani society most in need, more than 4 years ago. The Trust helps empower its members by providing them with vocational training and offering them a means of livelihood. It also aims to develop the community around these individuals so that they can achieve the dream of self-sustainability. What results is superlative collection of skillfully made handicrafts that go a long way towards helping the people of Jodhpur begin a new chapter in their lives. Forty Red Bangles is proud to call the Trust a sister concern and sponsors a sewing centre in Jodhpur.

Aura Herbal Textiles Ltd.Aura is the dream venture of Arun and Sonal Baid. Through their innovative process of producing herbal textiles and dyes, they help in impeding pollution and harm caused by regularly dyed textiles. At Aura their vision is a futuristic world where every user may enthusiastically choose herbal dyed fabric without compromising on design, quantity or quality. To add to this, they also take pride in being one of the few dyeing units to practice recycling the solid as well as liquid waste produced. This not only allows them to be the producers of fabric that is completely eco-friendly, but makes our process a reflection of their belief: We live and dye naturally.

GramshreeGramshree's mission is to enable women to be catalysts of sustainable economic and social change in order to strengthen their families and positively impact their communities. They work with over 500 women in the slum and lower-income areas of Ahmedabad and the rural areas of Patan and Kachchh in Gujarat. Kuprkabi- Varmnmala Jain's Ceramic Design Studio The name Kuprkabiis an amalgamation of the words for 'cup and and saucer' in Gujarati. Kuprkabi represents two of the most basic forms in pottery, but there is nothing basic about the fine works of art that come parading out of this ceramic design studio. The brainchild of Varnmala Jain, Kuprkabi is not only the leading name in ceramic design but also a centre for spreading awareness about the art of pottery and a means of empowering the craft communities. All of Kuprkabi's wonderful artefacts are exclusive, custom-designed and handmade, winning them critical acclaim across the world.
