Camille Claudel 1915 (PG)France 2014 Dir: Bruno Dumont 1hr 39min subtitles With: Juliette Binoche, Jean-Luc Vincent, Robert LeroyIn Camille Claudel 1915, Juliette Binoche gives a mesmerizing performance as Auguste Rodin’s protégé (and later mistress), andsister of the Christian/mystic poet Paul Claudel. Inspired by the correspondence between Paul and Camille, writer/director BrunoDumont (Humanité, La Vie de Jesus) focuses on Camille Claudel’s struggle to find understanding and recognition as an artist - andthe moments before her brother’s visit while she is confined to a mental institution. Shot in a real psychiatric asylum, BrunoDumont brings together a supporting cast comprised of real-life patients and their actual nurses that, alongside Binoche, create anemotionally intense ensemble - and a rare cinematic experience. While the camera rarely ventures outside of her prison’s thickwalls, the story of Camille Claudel’s 29-year confinement is in itself a tale of defiance against social norms - and a testament to thepower of creativity and fortitude.

A Hard Day’s Night (U) UK 1964 Dir: Richard Lester 1hr 24mins With: Wilfred Brambell, George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo StarrDuring the first worldwide flush of Beatlemania in 1964, United Artists wanted to ship out a movie with The Beatles before theirvogue was over. Working within a tight $500,000 budget, director Richard Lester turned out A Hard Day’s Night in a fast 6 weeks.Using a variety of techniques borrowed from Hollywood slapstick comedies, the French “new wave” movement, and his ownexperiences as a TV-commercial director, Lester, with screenwriter Alun Owen, fashioned an exhilarating study of a “typical” 36 hoursin the lives of the Fab Four. Onto a plot about getting to the Big Show on time are hung a series of instant-reaction gags, charactervignettes, and musical set pieces. Including the hits Can’t Buy Me Love, And I Love Her and A Hard Day’s Night – the film is still adelight to watch and has proven itself to be a rock-and-roll movie classic.

Societal dignity and decorum must be respected, and it is. Nevertheless, heated passions come intoplay, while Hoffmeister looks on. Grand Central (15)France 2013 Dir: Rebecca Zlotowski 1hr 34minssubtitles With: Olivier Gourmet, Denis Menochet,Tahir Rahim, Lea SeydouxFrench writer-director Rebecca Zlotowski followsher impressive 2010 debut Belle Epine with apunchy, compelling workplace drama. TaharRahim (A Prophet) plays Gary, who signs on forwork in a nuclear power plant (the ‘Central’ ofthe title). He’s inducted into the workforce bysupervisor Gilles (Olivier Gourmet) and hard-bitten veteran Toni (Menochet), only to discoverthat radiation contamination is not just a riskfactor but an everyday hazard, the dirty opensecret of his new profession. But also pushingGary towards meltdown is his simmeringattraction to Toni’s girlfriend Karole (Seydoux). This politically charged, somewhat Loachian drama has the intensely satisfying narrative drive of a Zola novel, aswell as echoing classic Hollywood blue-collar dramas in the Howard Hawks vein. The cast is terrific, with Rahim and Seydouxcrackling like isotopes in their own right, and an urgent jazz score by Robin Coudert pushing this atomic drama into the red.

Mood Indigo (12A) L’Ecume des JoursFrance 2013 Dir: Michel Gondry 1hr 30mins subtitles With: Romain Duris, Omar Sy, Gad Elmaleh, Aissaa Maiga, Audrey TautouWhen Colin (Duris) meets the woman of his dreams Chloé (Tautou) they take a ride in a glass-domed cloud floating over Paris, andfor their wedding day he buys her a perspex limousine. But their idyllic marriage comes crashing down when Chloé falls sick with awater lily growing in her lung. To pay medical bills in this fantasy version of Paris, Colin works a series of increasingly absurd jobs, while around them their apartment disintegrates and their friends go to pieces. Michel Gondry’s film is based on the 1947 classicnovel ‘L’Écume des Jours’ (‘Froth on the Daydream’) by Boris Vian, a rich text that describes many surreal, visual treats and allowsGondry to pour his imagination onto the screen. And at a time when CGI seems to rule the box-office, he refreshingly champions in-camera effects and clever staging. Gondry has produced something original and spectacular – this is a film that needs to be seen ona big, big screen!

Lilting (15)UK 2014 Dir: Hong Khaou 1hr 31mins With: Peter Bowles, Naomi Christie,Andrew Leung, Cheng Pei Pei, Ben WhishawBen Whishaw (Skyfall, Bright Star) and Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon) star in Hong Khaou’s first feature, a soulful and movingdrama about loss and the limitations of language. Set in contemporaryLondon, it depicts Chinese-Cambodian Junn (Pei Pei) who’s mourningthe untimely death of her son Kai (Leung). She has lived in London forover 20 years but has not assimilated; she doesn’t speak English and iscompletely isolated by Kai’s death. Struggling tocommunicate without a shared language, Richard brings along aninterpreter, Vann (Christie) and gradually he and Junn begin to talk, and tomourn the man they both adored together. Lyrical and suffused withtenderness, Lilting is eloquent on the pain of loss, on how the estrangement ofgrief can mirror other types of alienation, and on both contemporary younggay relationships and cultural divides – but it’s also humorous, particularlyin relation to retiree Alan’s (Peter Bowles – TV’s To the ManorBorn) romantic pursuit of Junn.

God’s Pocket (15)USA 2014 Dir: John Slattery 1hr 28mins With: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christina Hendricks, John TurturroIn the gritty, blue-collar neighborhood of God’s Pocket, MickeyScarpato’s crazy stepson, Leon, is killed in a construction “accident,” andMickey (Hoffman) quickly tries to bury the bad news with the body. Butwhen a local columnist comes sniffing around for the truth, things gofrom bad to worse. Mickey finds himself stuck in a life-and-deathstruggle compounded by a body he can’t bury, a wife he can’t please, and a debt he can’t pay. Acclaimed actor John Slattery makes an

impressive jump behind the  camera with an assured directorial debutthat shows he has a razor-sharp eye for conveying the absurdity, cruelty,

desperation, and tragic optimism of the people he portrays. Like life, hisscenes seamlessly fuse humour and heartbreak, but it’s Slattery’s wit andconfident style that make the portrait so authentic. Featuring a top-shelf

cast and impeccable cinematography, God’s Pocket oozes with talent andmarks the emergence of an inspired directorial presence.

Two Days, One Night (15)Belgium/France 2014 Dir: Luc & Jean-Pierre Dardenne 1hr 35mins subtitles With: Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio RongioneRapturously received at this year’s Cannes, where it screenedin competition for the Palme d’Or, the latest from Belgium’smasters of social realism, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, starsMarion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose, Rust and Bone) as a womanwho must convince her colleagues to give up their bonuses soshe can keep her job. Returning to work at a solar panelfactory after suffering a breakdown, Sandra (Cotillard) findsthe management have forced the rest of the staff to choosebetween eliminating her or keeping their 1 ,000 eurobonuses. She forces a vote but has only a weekend topersuade her colleagues to support her. Visibly desperate, she is a disturbing presence, intruding on her colleagues’weekends and asking them to give up a much-neededbonus to help a colleague they barely know; all the whilestill battling the depression and anxiety that saw her off work in thefirst place. A parable of anonymity and alienation in the 21st century workplace, the Dardenne brothers seem to be offering a widercommentary on the effects of economic pressures on community in contemporary society.
