Women’s Circle Resumes Men’s Breakfast Preschool Culver’s Night! Back to School On September 19th from 5:30pm-7:00pm the preschool, with help of the preschool board, will have a wonderful ice cream social. It will be so fun to see everyone! The Women’s Circle resumes on September 12 at 10:00am in the parlor. They will be finishing their study on James. They meet the second Thursday of every month. As part of the meetings they pack lunches for Cross-Lines. The Men’s Breakfast group meets at 8:00am the third Monday of every month at the Neighborhood Café in Waldo. They will meet Monday, September 16 and October 21. Please join us! Join the preschool students and teachers at Culver’s on September 12 from 5-8pm. A percentage of the sales will benefit the preschool. Everyone is welcome! School Supplies Drive – We Did Great! On Friday, July 26, Pat and Karen Wiederaenders took 2 large boxes of school supplies to Foster Adopt/Connect. Here’s the list of everything that was collected: 12 composition books, 2 three-ring binders, 18 spiral bound notebooks, 1 pkg. note cards, 11 colored pencils, pkg. notebook paper, 32 pencils, 6 rulers, 2 dozen highlighters, 6 pkg. glue sticks, 14 bottles of glue, 16 boxes of crayons, 3 pkg. pens, 9 erasers, 3 bottles white out, 3 sets of earbuds, 4 calculators, 3 compass and protractor sets, 3 pkg. colored markers, 2 monthly planners and 1 pkg. construction paper. Foster Adopt/Connect was thrilled to get it. Last year they served 900 children! Can you imagine starting school without school supplies? These kids won’t have to find out what that’s like. Back-to-School time for Harvesters! For our food barrels please bring boxes of raisins, fruit roll-ups, and other healthy snacks that would be good for school lunch boxes. For easy family dinners, canned tuna or beans would be appropriate. Foster Adopt/Connect Drive Harvesters Jimbo’s Sing-along! On Thursday, September 12, at 6:00pm there will be a light dinner in the Parlor followed by a sing-along with Jim Kurtz. Please join in on the fun! All are invited. For some time now, Ward Parkway has been experiencing change, tran- sition and transformation. Roger Nicholson, in Temporary Shepherds, uses these definitions: Change: the inevitable movement of life’s forces. Transition: the process by which we must deal with the inevitable changes of life (the interim). Transformation: the new shape that occurs after transition, toward which change is aimed. Nicholson frames our Christian faith as follows: God acts to change the horrible consequence of sin into forgiveness. The process of transition occurs as Jesus pours out his blood on a cross crucified. Easter morning and a joyous resurrection present a transformation to new life with new shape. This, then, is the Good News that it is our mis- sion to proclaim and to live out. Times of transition are not always enthusiastically embraced because they represent struggle, a “wilderness experience.” We want to avoid the anxiety and stress that arises during these times. And yet, God has created us to constantly grow and change, to participate in transitions. Over and over, we are thrust in to dying to something, sinking into confusion, frustration or despair, and then rising again to something new. While an interim time can be uncomfortable, it can also be a time of renewal, an opportunity to go in a new direction. It can allow us to let go of that which has been unsuccessful or unproductive, and embrace a new perspective. In this time, it is important for us to hold on to our faith and to trust in God to lead us. In doing so, we can anticipate with optimistic hearts the new reality that comes with Christ’s continual presence in our lives and our ministry together. It is with gratitude that I embark on a time of interim ministry with you here at Ward Parkway Presbyterian Church. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this worshipping community of faith. Pastor Bonnie

Your Pastor Nominating Committee has been busy this summer. Since May we have read and consid-ered over 80 Pastor Information Forms. In July we met several times, conducting two initial interviews and one follow-up second interview. We also shared lunch with another prospective candidate. At the time this article is written, we have scheduled two meetings in August, with the goal of conducting interviews with four more individuals. Jesus told his disciples, “...whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24 NRSV.) All of us on the PNC are grateful for your continued prayers as we search for the person God has already chosen to lead us into the future. We rely on God’s unfailing promise. Carmen

Adult Bible Study

The Cornerstone Bible Study Group will begin "BELIEVE" by Randy Frazee on September 8, 2019, in Holy Grounds Room at 9:25 am. Join us this fall

for a 10 week DVD/discussion study of "BELIEVE". These 10 lessons discuss the core practices of the Christian life. Together they answer the question, "What should I do"? Contact Mike Montgomery if

interested.

July/August Session Notes Preschool News

Preschool is gearing up for a great year ahead! All staff will report on Monday, August 19, for our staff kick off and meeting. Students will begin school on Monday, August 26/27, with our Get Acquainted Conferences for parents and students. This year, we welcome 107 students to Ward Parkway Preschool and 2 new staff members. On Thursday, September 12, we will have Culver’s night at the State Line Culver’s. Culver’s generously gives back a portion of their sales this evening to our school, and in turn the preschool takes over their dining area with laughter, and lots of children! Please feel free to join us for this fun night of fellowship! We are excited about our ice cream social/back-to-school night on September 19 from 5:30-7. This is a fun event for children and parents. Children can visit their classrooms and have ice cream outside. There is something about visiting your school at night that everyone loves. I still remember my back- to-school nights as a child. We are looking forward to a fun night! Fall also brings chapel, a visit from the firefighters and Halloween parades and classroom parties. The children love these events as well! Please feel free to give the preschool a call if you would like to come read a story to a preschool classroom. We would love for you to meet some of these amazing children! Kim and Leslie

July Vacation Bible School: We are looking at doing a one-day vacation Bible school, probably on a weekend. Prayer Vigil: We had good participation in the prayer vigil on July 16. The session wished to thank Sarah Guthrie for setting up the online registration. Operations: Steve Guthrie has been looking for a new, permanent custodian. After doing several interviews, Steve decided that Corporate Cleaning group had the winning bid. They will start July 30. The Ward Parkway Homes Association has asked to use our south parking lot on September 28 to distribute 125 mums from a neighborhood fundraiser. We gave them permission to do this. Steve thanked Jim Kurtz and James Lusk for their help with watering the new trees.

August

Jim Kurtz has asked the session if he can have a dinner with a sing-along afterward. This would be a light dinner in the parlor followed by singing in the sanctuary. We have set this up for Thursday, September 12. Jim is going to invite people from his music group and members are encouraged to invite their friends. This month Mission & Stewardship gave money to Rhythm of Grace and our missionary in Costa Rica. The fall stewardship drive will begin in October. Tina, our office manager, is going to have surgery on her shoulder September 17 so she will be out of the office for some time after that. We will be praying that her surgery goes well and she recovers quickly. Trunk or Treat will be October 26, which is the Saturday before Halloween. Rosemary McDaneld would like to teach English-as a-second-language classes at the church. These will be free classes for adults only. We will do a four-week trial run the middle of October through the middle of November.

Choir practice has resumed Wednesdays at 7:00pm. Come join us!
