SUMMER SCRIPTURE—A MIXED BAG
The topics for this summer’s Adult Formation/Scripture Study come from lectures offered at the Georgetown Scripture Institute about five years ago. I put them together in this package partly be-cause none on its own could be stretched over four weeks, but each one is very much worth considering and led to a great deal of fruit-ful discussion when I presented this grouping at St. John Fisher in 2013. So here is the schedule for these sessions in August—four Wednesdays at 7:00p.m., beginning August 1st….
August 1 – Scripture at the Council of Trent and Vatican II The Council of Trent, which lasted for sixteen years off and on in the middle of the 16th century, is often seen as nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction to the Reforma-tion which, in part, it was. But it was also extremely progressive, in theory if not in practice, and it really laid the groundwork for the truly groundbreaking work of Vatican II four centuries later. Put simply: without Trent, Vatican II might not have gone the way it did; we’ll see why that’s the case. This session will be the shortest of the four, but it comes from an extraordinary single presentation by the great church historian, Fr. John O’Malley, S.J. who was given access to previously unseen Vatican records from the Council of Trent.
August 8 - Social Concern in the Gospel of Luke – Part I
We’ve looked at some of the Lukan parables and pas-sages in the previous series on Luke, but we’ll approach them from a different angle, considering their some-what radical departure from, or expansion of, tradi-tional Old Testament understandings of social justice.
August 15 – Social Concern in Luke – Part II & Mary as Prophet
This session will focus on several unique Lukan say-ings and parables, including the Rich Man and Laza-rus, but will also include an extensive consideration of Mary’s Magnificat along with Luke’s Infancy narratives and the relation of those texts to Mary’s status in Luke as a prophet of social justice. This will probably be the longest of our four sessions and, along with the previ-ous week’s, comes from presentations given by the re-nowned New Testament scholar, Fr. John Donohue, S.J. who has since retired both from teaching and pub-lic speaking.

August 22 – Johannine Metaphors/Feminine Imagery in Jesus’
Self-Surrender The Gospel of John presents a unique view of Jesus’ passion and death, describing those penultimate events of his life in terms of birthing rather than dying. And even though she is never named in John but al-ways referred to as the Mother of Jesus, Mary plays a crucial role at both the beginning of Jesus’ public min-istry and at the cross. This session condenses four pres-entations by Sr. Barbara Reid, O.P., an authority of the Gospel of John.
If you’re interested in attending some or all of these sessions, please call the rectory in the next few weeks. If the new accessible and lar-ger meeting space in the school is completed by August 1, we will likely meet there, but if not, we’ll be in the Burke Center once again and there will be an announcement on July 29 regarding that. Since I can’t be sure about the location, attendance will still be limited to 40 at most, and beyond that there would be a waiting list—unless we’re able to meet in the new room.
Finally, if you need a bible, please indicate that when you register; the cost is $10.00. As always, we’ll be using the New Revised New American Bible since that is the version currently in use in the Lec-tionary for Mass—though even those readings are in the process of yet another revision coming out sometime in the next ten years. Fr. Bob

GOSPEL READING Mark 5:21-43
Jesus heals a woman afflicted with a
hemorrhage and raises Jairus’s
daughter from death.
FAMILY CONNECTION There are many ways in which we
can compare the request for healing
made by Jairus and the request of
the woman with the hemorrhage.
One comparison helps us think about
prayer. Jairus asked Jesus for heal-
ing on his daughter’s behalf; the
woman with the hemorrhage had no
one to speak for her and bravely ap-
proached Jesus on her own initiative.
In our prayers, we do both. We inter-
cede for others’ needs, and we also
courageously express our own needs
to God. We find hope in Jesus’ re-
sponse to both of these people, who
sought him out in their hour of
need.As you gather as a family, talk
about some of the things you have
prayed for this week. Notice that
some of your prayers may have been
for other people, and some of your
prayers may have been for your own
needs. In today’s Gospel we find en-
couragement for both kinds of
prayer. Read together today’s Gos-
pel, Mark 5:21-43. Talk about the
similarities and differences between
the two people who presented their
needs to Jesus in this Gospel. Notice
that both people received the healing
they sought from Jesus. We want to
pray for the needs of others and for
our own needs with as much faith
and hope as Jairus and the woman
with the hemorrhage did. Pray to-
gether in thanks and praise to God,
who hears our needs and answers
them, by praying today’s psalm,
Psalm 30.

A STATEMENT FROM DANIEL CARDINAL DINARDO June 13, 2018
Fort Lauderdale, FL—"At its core, asylum is an instrument to preserve the
right to life. The Attorney General's recent decision elicits deep concern be-
cause it potentially strips asylum from many women who lack adequate pro-
tection. These vulnerable women will now face return to the extreme dangers
of domestic violence in their home country. This decision negates decades of
precedents that have provided protection to women fleeing domestic vio-
lence. Unless overturned, the decision will erode the capacity of asylum to
save lives, particularly in cases that involve asylum seekers who are perse-
cuted by private actors. We urge courts and policy makers to respect and en-
hance, not erode, the potential of our asylum system to preserve and protect
the right to life.
Additionally, I join Bishop Joe Vásquez, Chairman of USCCB's Committee on
Migration, in condemning the continued use of family separation at the U.S./
Mexico border as an implementation of the Administration's zero tolerance
policy. Our government has the discretion in our laws to ensure that young
children are not separated from their parents and exposed to irreparable
harm and trauma. Families are the foundational element of our society and
they must be able to stay together. While protecting our borders is important,
we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other
ways to ensure that safety. Separating babies from their mothers is not the
answer and is immoral."
This statement came from the spring meeting of the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops, but it didn’t register on my radar since I wasn’t watching
the news or reading the papers while I was in Georgetown that week or at the
Archdiocesan Clergy Convocation the following week. But it certainly creates
a powerful connection between recent events surrounding immigration and
the Church’s teaching on social justice and deserves to be read and taken to
heart by all Catholics.

The Respect Life Ministry initiated donating diapers to Swaddle on Fa-
ther’s Day last year. Once again, this year, St. Joseph Parish is accom-
modating an on-going collection for Disposable Diapers. The baby crib
has been moved to the Northwest corner of St. Joseph Church and will
be a repository for Disposable Diapers. However often you can afford
to buy a package of disposable diapers, please bring it with you to
Mass and put it in the crib. The Respect Life Ministry will do the rest.
Again, THANK YOU for all you do.

"God who gave us life gave
us liberty. And can the liber-
ties of a nation be thought
secure when we have re-

a conviction in the minds of

That they are not to be vio-

SWADDLE
SWADDLE, the Southwest Area Dia-per Depository for Little Ends, is a diaper bank agency providing dia-pers to needy families in Chicago’s Southland. SWADDLE does not dis-tribute diapers to individuals. The diapers SWADDLE collects are given to local social service agencies in Chicago’s Southwest side and sub-urbs. So, when we donate to SWAD-DLE we are helping needy families throughout Chicago’s Southland.
The Respect Life Ministry initiated the on-going collection for Dispos-able Diapers. Once again, this year, St. Joseph Parish is accommodating an on-going collection for Dispos-able Diapers. The baby crib in the northwest corner of St. Joseph Church will be a repository for Dis-posable Diapers. However often you can afford to buy a package of disposable diapers, please bring it with you to Mass and put it in the crib. The Respect Life Ministry will do the rest. Thank you.

PRAYER FOR FREEDOM
Dear Lord, so many today misunderstand freedom believing that it is the ability
to do whatever we want. Help us always to remember that freedom, true free-
dom, is being able to do what we ought to do. That freedom, true freedom, is
not indulging our every want and whim, but instead is the ability to rise above
any desires that are wrong, disordered, dangerous or excessive. Give us the
grace always to remember that true freedom makes us the people you wish us
to be, that true freedom brings us closer to you, and reshapes our world in the
likeness of your kingdom.
Amen.
