IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT
Those words form one of the shortest and probably one of the most frequently used prayers for Catholics, as well as a summary of the truth we celebrate on this Trinity Sunday. But it is also a blessing prayer, both when invoked by a priest or bishop (or the Pope!) and also when we make that sign on ourselves, whether in our private prayers or at the beginning and end of every Mass.
I was pondering this the last time someone asked me to bless a de-votional object for them or as a gift for someone else. I’m always happy to do that, but then I wonder: doesn’t everyone realize that we’re ALL able to bless objects—or one another—whenever we choose? While I understand the desire to have an ordained person confer a blessing, I think it’s also important to recognize one of the rights conferred, not just by the sacrament of Orders, but by Bap-tism: the right to bless. After all, we do that for ourselves every time we make that Sign of the Cross—with the sole exception at the end of Mass when the blessing is conferred by the presider. Every bap-tized person has the “priestly power” to bless! My blessing isn’t any more special or effective than yours.
I remember the first time, many years ago, when parents told me that they blessed each of their children every night at bedtime. I was so impressed by that and I was happy to discover over the years that many Catholic parents did the same for their children. We all have the “power” to bless! It’s rather a shame that, during a certain period of Church history, the grace of blessing was effec-tively hijacked by the clergy, probably as a form of control but also, in some instances, to make money; the sin of “simony”, the “selling” of grace or blessing, was one of the many clerical abuses that led to the Reformation.
But there is a more ancient history of blessing that resided in the Celtic churches of Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the early centuries of Christianity in those lands—a rich history of “blessing prayers” for everyone and everything imaginable: farming and fishing, birth and death, for the hearth and the home, for the beginning and the end of a journey, for parents, spouses and children. No one felt the need to call for a priest to invoke any of those blessings; they were part of everyday life. I still remember my first trip to the west of Ire-land, particularly Galway and the island of Inishmore. One day as I was walking down the road, I overheard two teenage boys greet one another with “God be wi’ ye.” A blessing prayer, from teenag-ers! It astonished me and inspired me. Everyone can bless!

As we celebrate this feast of Father, Son and Spirit, it can be an op-portunity for all Christians to reclaim that baptismal right to bless ourselves and one another, our pets and gardens and homes, our comings and our goings—an acknowledgement of our intimate bond with the Holy Trinity, with one another and with all God’s creation.

GOSPEL READING Matthew 28:16-20
Jesus sends his disciples to make disciples of all nations.
FAMILY CONNECTION The Solemnity of the Holy Trinity in-vites us to remember that God has revealed himself to us as one God in three Persons. As Jesus departed from his disciples, he shared with them the power to make disciples of all nations. He taught his disciples to invite others to share in the life of the blessed Trinity by sharing with others the gift of Baptism. This con-tinues to be the mission of the Church. Each of us who has been baptized shares in the life of the blessed Trinity and also shares in the Church’s mission of inviting others to
share in God’s love.
As you gather as a family, bring out pictures and other mementos of fam-ily celebrations of the Sacrament of Baptism. Talk about the significance of Baptism with your family. Read together today’s Gospel, Matthew 28:16-20. Notice that Jesus taught his disciples to baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. What else does this remind you of? (the Sign of the Cross) Recall that whenever we pray the Sign of the Cross, we are reminding ourselves that we are united with God through our Baptism and share in the life of the blessed Trinity. Conclude by thanking God for sharing his life with us. Pray together the Glory Be to the Father:
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

COMMON WEIGHT LOSS MISTAKES
You’ve set your mind on a weight loss goal. You’ve started your diet. But you aren’t noticing much of a difference. If you find that your jeans still don’t fit, or your weight goes down only to come back up, you may be making some common dieting mistakes.
Committing to crash diets
Crash diets may seem promising, but unless you continue them for the long term, they may make it harder for you to maintain a stable weight in the future. If your diet suggests grapefruit and cabbage soup all day, the pounds will shed away. However, with your daily intake at less than 1,000 calories, you are training your metabolism to slow down. When the diet ends, your body will be burning calories slower, which usually results in regaining all the lost weight – and sometimes more.
Ignoring breakfast
Ignoring breakfast may be an easy way to cut calories, but it usually results in making you hungrier. Random snacking and eating bigger portions at lunch often result from skipping this important meal, which typically results in more calories overall. Instead of skipping, try and have a breakfast that is high in protein and fiber, which will help curb hunger throughout the day. Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast daily have a higher chance of maintaining a healthy weight.
Forgetting to track your snacks
Counting calories for meals is beneficial, but a lot of people forget to count the calories of the snacks they have in between meals. The birth-day cake from the office party, the bag of chips you brought for lunch and the coffee sample they gave you at the local coffee shop are all things that add up and may sabotage a well-planned diet.
Drinking too many calories
A lot of us forget to count the calories in our drinks. But alcoholic bever-ages and coffee “drinks” can have more than 500 calories. And the calories in fruit juice and soda add up quickly, as well. Drinks with high calorie counts can be enjoyed in moderation, but it’s best to stick with water when looking to drop pounds.
Impossible goals
Creating a realistic goal leads to successful dieting. But telling yourself that you want to lose 25 pounds within a week is unrealistic. Create goals that you are able to achieve. If you know you cannot realistically achieve a goal, you will be less likely to even start a diet. So to begin a successful diet, start by attempting to lose one to two pounds a week and add in exercise. This is a more realistic and healthier expectation, and when you start meeting your goals, you’ll be more motivated to meet your long-term goal.
