The Compagnietheater on the Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam is a centrally located, multifaceted location. It is both hip and styled but above all warm and welcoming.
The former church was rebuilt in the late 90’s by architect Francine Houben. While maintaining monumental elements such as the untreated, wooden pillars, the theater is a charming mix of traditional and new materials.
All this makes the Compagnietheater the ideal location for presentations, seminars, dinners or TV / radio recordings. It houses both a large and small theater space, a multifunctional pillared room known as the Zuilenzaal, a spacious foyer and a theater cafe. All the spaces can be hired individually or jointly.

The Compagnietheater is housed in a former Reformed Lutheran Church. The
Lutherans wanted their own church in the 18th century on the Kloveniers-
burgwal. The city council was in accordance but under the condition that the
exterior of the church did not show the characteristics of a church. There was
to be no tower and no bell. City architect Abraham van der Hart was asked
to design the discrete church building. The classical façade that we see on
the Kloveniersburgwal is actually the side of the church. The entrance for the
churchgoers was located in the Spinhuissteeg.
By the late 50’s the building lost its religious function. In that period the
archives of the Dutch Bank were housed in the building of the old church.
The nave of the building was filled with many meters of filing cabinets. The
monumental elements such as the Strümpfler organ, the largest baroque
organ of its kind and the pulpit were both relocated, respectively in the St.
Eusebius Church in Arnhem and the Dutch Reformed church in Elst.
After a period of vacancy, it was in 1995 that the former church was
repurposed into a theater by Mecanoo, the architect agency of Francine
Houben. Right up to 2009 artistic director Theu Boermans with his company
the Theatercompagnie created many acclaimed performances in this building.
Now it is up to the new generation of theater makers to take the stage and
produce plays that reflects the world around us.
