Have you ever noticed anything interesting while walking at the beach? Besides all the sea weed, sea shells, and sand? What about all that other stuff we see and consider as junk? Do you even know that there’s people making useful, artistic, beautiful pieces with those found objects?

You would never think that pieces such as old glass from a beer bottle or old tools hidden under the sand would ever become a work of art or most of all, something remarkably amazing. And this is where you shall see a comparison between junk and treasure.

I was searching through youtube, a website where people are able to upload videos and share with the “rest of the world”, searching for “junk turned into jewelry” and the results I wanted were not what I wanted. Instead I searched for glass jewelry and found this youtube video of an interview with a woman in East Northport, NY.

This woman goes to the beach almost every morning to search for old glass with her daughters. When she gets back home, she gets her tools ready to make the glass into a nice shape and makes it into something amazing. After making a beautiful piece she then sales it to her customers; selling necklaces and many bracelets to choose from.

Check out the video yourself and you will see great pieces of art.

11Near the Seawith Carolina

nder the rays of sunlight of about seventy-five degrees, Carolina, a twenty-year-old “Killers” band fan, was walking on the sand with her younger brother.

I caught up to her and asked her if it was okay to ask her some

questions for a beach magazine I’m doing

and fortunately she said

“Sure!”

13My QuestionsHer Answers

How often do you go to the beach? At least 2 or 3 times a year and it’s over the summer. I went once over the winter.

When you do go, what do you like about it?It’s the one place where everyone is enjoying themselves. The view is nice and the water is so calming. It kills all the bad vibes. =]

What do you like to see when you go to the beach?I LOVE watching the bird parade and spotting sea lions. I always anticipate a bird attack, as weird as it may sound, I'm sure other’s too!

Does the beach remind you of anything? No moment in particular but it reminds me why we need to take care of the planet.

Do you like collecting the seashells?I love collecting them but once I get home I end up giving them away (chuckles).

Besides seashells, have you noticed any other objects in the sand? if so, like what?Since the last time I went to the beach, I've only seen like little pebbles. No trash, which is really good!

Have you noticed the littering that people leave? How do you feel about it?That's one thing I have a problem with because I care about being environmentally friendly. Seeing when it happens, I want to go up to them and ask if I could litter my trash at their home.

Do you think we can do something about the littering? Like what?Right now all we can do is help clean up. Anyone can get with their friends or family and spend a day at the beach to pick up trash and have fun. Other at the the beach will see, and maybe thinking about helping too.
