A fluid approach to the world of philanthropy

Water is a symbol of life and hope, an appropriate analogy for philanthropy. As the world emerges from a year of dark clouds, the Foundation Center is a source of rivers of knowledge and pools

of information, spreading far and wide. By harnessing the unique qualities inherent in water, we stimulate growth and renewal.

Within hours of the devastat-

ing earthquake in haiti, the

Foundation Center launched

a web page filled with infor-

mation about lessons learned from disaster

relief, interviews with experts, a rapid-fire

survey of 135 foundation Ceos, and a

real-time map of philanthropy’s response.

in the first few weeks we identified more

than $20 million in grants destined for relief

and recovery in haiti: within two months the

volume had swelled to more than $200 million. using this

free resource, anyone could see the international and haitian

organizations that were receiving these grants and the

foundations around the world that were giving them.

When the Secretary of education announced $100 billion of

stimulus spending, the nation’s education funders saw it as

an opportunity to leverage their own resources,

long experience, and ideas. the American

economy was in crisis, our educational system

under severe stress, and speed was of the

essence. With support from the Charles Stewart

Mott Foundation, a web portal, Foundations for

education excellence, went from concept to

launch in seven weeks and serves today as an

information crossroads where foundations, the

federal government, and local school districts

can see who is doing what, where in the six

priority areas of the stimulus program: accountability, early

learning, education standards, low-performing schools,

preparation for college, and teacher quality and leadership.

As the world economic recession deepened, nonprofits

needed the best tools possible to find the resources to meet

the rising demand for their services. the Foundation Center

Nonprofit organizations and the foundations that support them need the best information

possible to do their vital work, and they need it now. this simple three letter word that

appears and reappears throughout this annual report best captures the spirit that drives

today’s Foundation Center.

responded by adding power Search to Foundation Directory

Online. By writing a single word or phrase in a text box,

grantseekers can instantly search nine powerful databases

containing nearly 100,000 foundations, more than two million

grants, 5,000 research reports, news stories, and more.

every day, i take the issues i hear on the news and use power

Search to tell me what philanthropy is doing about them now.

transparency is an ideal that each foundation has to pursue

according to its values and means. however, one thing seems

certain: as the practice of philanthropy is being disrupted by

the digital revolution, choosing not to be transparent is an

option whose days are numbered. if you have a public pur-

pose, and foundations certainly do, the public wants to know:

“What are you doing?” We created www.glasspockets.org to

show the many creative ways in which hundreds of founda-

tions are striving to answer that question. Any foundation

that is debating about whether to create a searchable grants

database, initiate a grantee feedback mechanism, or get its

feet wet with social media will, on Glasspockets, find plenty

of peer foundations with whom they can consult about how to

build greater transparency

At the heart of virtually everything the Foundation Center

does lies the ability to collect, classify, and research data on

foundations, the grants they make, and the nonprofits that

receive them. in l956, when the Foundation Center opened

its doors, that meant painstakingly collecting 7,000 founda-

tion documents in file cabinets for public inspection. in the

1960s it meant staff going to the internal Revenue Service to

hand transcribe information from foundation tax returns and

publishing it in that massive volume, The Foundation Directory,

that launched so many fundraising careers, including my own.

today it means convincing foundations around the world to

join the 500 that now give us their grants data electronically

so we can transform it into interactive maps—like our Google

map-based Philanthropy In/Sight—research reports and other

tools that meet the information needs of today.

the deep recession from which the world now struggles to

recover taught us just how important the work of founda-

tions and nonprofits can be. in the years ahead we will have

to do even better at addressing pressing global challenges.

All answers were pure speculation before the Foundation Center began compil-ing statistics in 2008 as part of the diversity in philanthropy project. having produced benchmark data on the national picture and then California, we focused on the New York City area in 2009, with other localities under consideration. this groundbreaking data fills an important information gap regarding current diversity practices that will inform future decision making.

global Philanthropy Forumthe GloBAl philANthRopY FoRuM (GpF) is a community of donors and social investors committed to international causes. its annual conference supports philanthropists who wish to be strategic in their work advancing human security, environmental stewardship, and improved quality of life around the world. in 2009, GpF chose the Foundation Center as a partner to provide critical in-depth information on the conference’s main themes, in the form of visual presenta-tions and web portals with links to essen-tial resources and news coverage, lists of sample grants from the Center’s database, maps of funding, statistical analyses, and more.

Focus on HaitiSooN AFteR the January 10, 2010, earthquake devastated haiti, the foun-dation community faced mass confu-sion—trying to find what grants were being awarded and what funders were likely to do, short- and long-term, as well as advice on where to make their own contributions. the Foundation Center sprang into action, immediately posting a web portal consolidating the news, donor activity, and preliminary

research based on a survey of our Grantmaker leadership panel. As a result, timely, useful information was easily avail-able to anyone who needed it, and it quickly became cited by the media as one of the key places to get the most complete and up-to-date information available.

overseas Funding information centersFoR Five deCAdeS, nonprofit grantseekers around the country have relied on the Foundation Center’s funding information centers known as Cooperating Collections as a place to start their research. Now, nongovernmental organizations in several far-flung locations have access to the same databases, books, and level of professional expertise that their domestic counter-parts enjoy. in 2009, the Foundation Center established new Collections in Australia, Brazil, Nigeria, thailand, and Mexico, and will continue to bring global citizens the knowledge and training they need to become successful grantseekers.

the Foundation Center sheds light on many dimensions of philanthropy, including the giving patterns within particular fields. Social Justice Grantmaking II, released in July 2009, provides an in-depth look at current attitudes and trends with the hard data grantmakers and practitioners need to strategically plan for the future. A blend of statistics and interview results, it identifies the factors most affecting social justice grantmaking: a changed political environment, the success of community organizing in the recent election, and a reinvigorated commitment to social justice. in december, we produced a related webinar, “obama, the economic Crisis, and the persistence of hope,” which remains available at our web site’s events Archive.

WoMeN’S FuNdS

Women’s funds are a rapidly growing and influential force in philanthropy, and funding specifically targeting women and girls has outpaced overall giving in recent years. details on the distinctive contributions of women’s funds and giving patterns and trends of u.S. foundation funding targeting this population can be found in accelerating change for Women and Girls: The role of Women’s Funds, which the Foundation Center published in June 2009 in collaboration with the Women’s Funding Network.

We posted this research for free at our Focus on the economic Crisis web portal, where visitors also find an interactive distribution map of the most recent foundation support to aid those affected and another of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding opportunities for nonprofits.

learning the deSiRe to expANd, enhance, and refresh one’s fundrais-ing skills is spurred on by increased competition for scarce funds. in fall 2009, the Foundation Center introduced a new class, “Fundraising in a Challenging economy,” in all five of our regional centers. in it, nonprofits learn what they can do to survive during an economic downturn and how to better posi-tion themselves to thrive in a difficult fundraising environment. “turning economic Crisis into opportunity,” a four-part webinar series, was launched in 2009 to help nonprofits see beyond the recession and build more sustainable organizations.

on June 18, 2009, representatives of four sAN FRANCisCo Bay Area grantmakers discussed funding programs and guidelines to improve K–12 public education.

on May 20, 2009, CLeveLAND social media guru George Nemeth was interviewed via blog in a live Q&A session moderated by Cindy Bailie, the director of our Cleveland office. George answered ques-tions from Cindy and the online audience about twitter, Facebook, blogging and how these tools can help nonprofits achieve their missions.
