Foundation Reading Program

It is important to note that the current Reading

Program in place has not changed and will continue.

Home readers Meant to be easy (independent)

readers, Use yellow log book Prompt your child to have a go at any

tricky or unknown words. Identify words, letters, sentences.

Library Books Depending on your child's choice of

book, these books are normally books you read to your child or you may read with your child.

Before reading the story, prompt and hold a discussion about the book & its illustrations.

Identify words they might know.

Coloured Words Continue working with your child on

recognising these words. Encourage them and prompt them to

find these words in other situations. Make sure you re-visit previous colours

learnt. Mix the words up when practising.

What can you do at home?Finding a time and place… Establish a routine. Avoid interruptions Be relaxed and comfortable (a suitable

place for you & your child)

What can you do at home?Set the scene… Talk about the book before opening it, Encourage your child to hold the book &

turn pages, Pose questions about the book & about

how to read the book, Show enthusiasm & enjoy the reading

experience together

What can you do at home?Tips when reading…. At unknown words be patient, let your child think

& have a go. Reward their attempt or success! If they can’t get the word, you as the parent re-

read the sentence, this might prompt them. Wrong word said, don’t correct until the page is

done and break the word down. If your child makes a mistakes & doesn’t make

sense, ask them ‘does that make sense?’ and re-read what they said.

What can you do at home?Self correction… Its allowing children to correct their own

mistakes, Strategies to self-correct:- re-reading a word or sentence,- Checking pictures with text,- Predicting a word then confirming or

trying another word.

Dos & Don’tsDos:-risk take, let your child ‘have a go’-its okay to look at pictures to get meaning-one-to-one pointing,-Re-read sentences to get meaning.

Don’ts:-don’t stop your child in the middle of a sentence,-don’t make your child sound out every word,-Don’t loose your patience.

Enjoy Reading TogetherRead often to and with your children so that reading is seen as a pleasurable and importance part of their lives. As children read, they become more aware of words which will benefit their spelling.
