PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS FUNDWE “BELIEVE” IN BEING PREPARED FOR THE UNKNOWN

No one can see the future. The coronavirus (COVID-19) is an unknown player, and unfortunately the best minds on earth can’t do more than make educated guesses about what comes next and when. Now is the time to prepare as we adapt to the new world.

UF Health The Villages® Hospital Supply Chain Services is working diligently to procure necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for our health care workers who are on the front lines. The hospital’s number one priority is their safety and that of the patients. While our hospital has an adequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) today, they could face challenges in the future. We need to prepare for contingency in order to be in the best possible position for everyone in our community.

In May of 2020, the Auxiliary Foundation established a Pandemic Preparedness Fund. Donations from this designated fund will be utilized to acquire personal protective equipment such as N95 respirator masks, isolation gowns, surgical masks, gloves, face shields, goggles, hand sanitizer and other supplies for frontline healthcare workers at UF Health The Villages® Hospital if and when the need develops.

Many individuals, organizations and clubs in The Villages have made contributions to the fund including the following: Rotary District 6980, Village Vettes Corvette Club, The Benvenuto Americans of Italian Heritage Club and Hope Lutheran Church.

If you have ever considered donating to help our community, now is the time to consider a gift to our local hospital. Never before has that contribution been needed so much, and never before has the dollar you give had the potential to make such a tremendous impact for us all.

To learn more or make an online donation visit TVRHFOUNDATION.ORG and select DONATE NOW. Please designate your gift to the Pandemic Preparedness Fund.

Our Mission StatementTo raise funds and create awareness

of the services which our hospital provides to maintain and improve the

quality of patient care.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEThe Pandemic has changed all of our lives in ways that we could not imagine. We at the Foundation have adapted to our new normal by continuing our operations via Zoom meetings and creatively evaluating our fundraising opportunities. There is a lot to update you about, starting with what is going on at our hospital.

If you missed the big announcement in The Villages® Daily Sun on July 31, 2020, we at UF Health are growing rapidly. The location of our new state-of-the-art hospital was finally revealed. It will be adjacent to the Florida Turnpike at the intersection with County Road 470. The 400-acre facility is very special because it is not only a teaching hospital but is also a regional trauma center, which is much needed in our rapidly expanding community. The hospital is only a part of the medical village that will include educational facilities and housing for doctors, nurses, medical students and other healthcare professionals. In addition,

the campus will include research and advanced clinical care facilities. Future plans for the medical village include attracting health care specialists, medical equipment, pharmaceutical and other health care companies. We are making great strides in the quality of health care in our community. In addition to our future expansion, our present is bright as well. Another recent announcement recognized UF Health being selected as a top-rated hospital in Florida!

Our Foundation has not slowed down during the Pandemic either. We have had to nimbly adjust to the new normal by actively evaluating our fundraising activities and how we can be of service to our hospital. Keeping the safety of our community first and foremost in mind led to the cancellation of several of our usual events including the annual Foundation dinner, Hearts for Our Hospital Big Bike Weekend and the John Truth and Reflexx concert fund raisers.

We have reinvented our annual Gala which takes place in February. Live events are not possible due to the Pandemic so our Gala this year will be going virtual and will be held in partnership with The Villages Homeowners Advocates! We will be having smaller gatherings with team captains that will include virtual online versions of the same auction you all have kindly supported over the years. We have already lined up some new and exciting event sponsors to help us make this year’s Gala a success.

The Pandemic Preparedness Fund is a new and innovative development. This fund, which can be accessed via our website, benefits local, hard-working medical professionals who sacrifice so much to ensure we continue to be in good health.

Many thanks to our Foundation President, Dick Campbell, and our staff for spearheading these new endeavors and as always, thanks to you, our readers and supporters.

Scott Sander, CPA, Chairman

UF Health The Villages® Hospital

Auxiliary Foundation

UF Health The Villages® Hospital staff members and volunteers receive thanks every day . . . a smile, a handshake, a hug, or simple words that fill our hearts. The Kudos Korner is a special place where we showcase the appreciation of others. The following is an excerpt from a letter expressing one family’s gratitude.

“Good afternoon, I just want to let you know that I needed to take my husband David to the Brownwood ER on Tuesday, February 11, 2020. I must let you know what an awesome experience it was. Starting with registration to the actual care by the staff, everyone was friendly, compassionate and checking on him from the time they took him back to the ER room. Sommer, his nurse, was great making sure he was okay throughout his entire stay. Not only is the facility beautiful but so is your staff. Thanks so much for the quality care my husband received there. Kudos to you all on a job well done!”

If you would like to share your gratitude for the care you or a family member received at the hospital, please email your story to [email protected]. We will publish as many stories as space allows in each edition.

We would like to take this opportunity to again express our deepest appreciation to all of YOU for your monumental support of our Foundation and hospital. Prior to the pandemic outbreak we always felt that we were part of something much greater than ourselves. Over the past several months, we’ve had the opportunity to witness what this greatness is. While so many have said that our hospital and staff are the heroes, of which I will agree, we would be remiss if we did not salute and say thank you to the individuals, groups, clubs, restaurants, and other organizations who gave unselfishly of their time, talents and products to help ensure our staff was taken care of. These people are OUR HEROES!

We encourage you to say “thank you” or patronize their establishment(s). While our communities are in the process of reopening and rebuilding, now more than ever, is a time for all of us to come together to help our neighbors.

AWARD PRESENTATION LIKE NO OTHERThe 2020 hospital and thrift shop volunteer honorees were selected and the awards were engraved, but what can you do when the luncheons were not being held due to the coronavirus? The presentations still needed to feel “special.” How about borrowing the Publishers Clearing House method? You know, show up unannounced with flowers, signs and balloons to give the winners their awards. So that’s what we did! And the winners are . . .

INTRODUCING LORRAINE BROWNWhen Lorraine Brown, MSN, RN, NE-BC assumed her role as interim Vice President, Chief Clinical Officer and Site Administrator at UF Health The Villages® Hospital, she was excited about all the changes that awaited her. As she remarked to her dad, “It’s a new building, new people and a new job!” What Lorraine could not have anticipated was a global pandemic that would impact every aspect of the health care delivery process. “Initially, changes had to be made so quickly. When the coronavirus first hit, we were learning so much so fast”, Lorraine explains. “The coronavirus overshadowed everything. Every day we were just trying to stay ahead of it.”

Months later, having accepted her title permanently, Lorraine is comfortable with change. As the hospital returns to a “new normal”, she is excited about the future. “The Villagers have high expectations for their hospital,” she states, expectations that she chooses to embrace. Lorraine acknowledges that UF The Villages® Hospital shares a unique relationship with the community, a true partnership. Moving forward, she is committed to working to see the hospital continue to change and improve and provide a level of service with which the community is consistently pleased. Lorraine concludes, “This is an absolutely beautiful facility, and it is here to serve The Villages.”

Lorraine is a native of Lafayette, Indiana and earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University. She and her husband live in The Village of Osceola Hills Soaring Eagle. Before coming to UF Health The Villages® Hospital, Brown served as the Administrative Director of Nursing at UF Health Leesburg Hospital.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCAREThe UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation is committed to supporting the UF Health The Villages® Hospital as they provide quality health care to the community now and in the future. One of the ways they accomplish this goal is through the Foundation Student and Team Member Scholarship Program. Under the capable direction of Scholarship Chairman, Gary Kadow, and through the generosity of our donors, the scholarship program provides tuition assistance to individuals who plan to pursue a career in the healthcare field. By investing in these students -- future doctors, nurses, technicians, therapists and administrators -- the Foundation is making a valuable investment in the future of healthcare.

The program is two-tiered. The first level is a traditional college scholarship program that offers awards to deserving high school seniors as well as seniors from military families which are awarded in partnership with Project SOS- Support Our Soldiers, Inc. These scholarships are $8,000, with the student receiving $2,000 each year that he or she is enrolled in school full-time with good academic standing. In 2020, eight of these scholarships were awarded to area high school students.

The second tier of the program consists of Team Member Scholarships. These awards, up to $2,000, are offered to current employees at UF The Villages® Hospital who wish to advance their careers through further study. Team members seeking advanced certification, advanced licensing or even a master’s degree are eligible for this program.

Highly skilled healthcare workers are the future of healthcare. By assisting these individuals through the Foundation Student and Team Member Scholarship Program, and the current evaluation and development of a possible student internship program, the UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation is working to ensure quality healthcare in our community for many years to come.

ELIJAH HUGHES: FUTURE CRITICAL CARE NURSETwenty-two-year-old Elijah Hughes is a semester away from his goal of becoming a nurse. In December 2020, he will graduate from Keiser University in Sarasota, Florida, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. He intends to pursue a career in critical care, working in the ICU. Eventually, he hopes to become a traveling nurse, providing much-needed care to those in underserved areas. “It would be really cool to get tons of travel while providing care where it is needed the most,” he explains.

Elijah knew in high school that he wanted to pursue a career in health care and participated in the Medical Career Academy (MeCA) at South Sumter High School in Bushnell, Florida. According to Hughes, students enrolled in MeCA complete a curriculum that entitles them to graduate from high school with a CNA, CMAA

and CPR certificates. It was through this program that he learned about the UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation scholarship program.

“My scholarship has been super helpful,” Elijah acknowledges. “When it came to college tuition, I knew my mom would not be able to help.” Several of his friends were also awarded scholarships from the Auxiliary Foundation, and those awards have made a huge impact. “It definitely takes away the strain and encourages you to move ahead and go to school,” says Elijah. “Even if we aren’t great at letting you know, I would love for you to realize how much it helps.”

2021 HEARTS FOR OUR HOSPITAL GALA IS GOING VIRTUALIt is simply hard to Believe how much life has changed for all Americans during this last year…and the changes continue. In order to adapt to these extraordinary times, the upcoming 15th Annual Hearts for Our Hospital Gala will be a virtual affair! Yes, on Saturday, February 13, 2021, for the first time in the event’s history, the gala will be streamed live via Zoom into the living rooms of virtually the entire world.

This year’s theme is “Believe!” because in trying times, hope is America’s greatest asset. We must believe that, together, we can persevere and overcome the adversity life has thrown our way and, in doing so, bring hope to so many in need.

We Believe…and we want to make you a believer, too.

This year’s gala is hosted by UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation and The Villages® Homeowners Advocates (VHA). Together, we are excited to present this awesome technologically groundbreaking event. We Believe this will set a precedent for future galas to come, and we invite you to join us.

During this spectacular event, specialists from UF Health and local physicians will present exciting new information on relevant topics such as the COVID-19 virus that is affecting us all is so many different ways. Audience members will be able to ask questions and get real-time answers to some of the tough questions we are all asking. In addition to these informative presentations, there will be panel

discussions, virtual “House Parties” held throughout The Villages, and an online auction during which the event’s virtual audience will have the opportunity to bid on and purchase exclusive items, exciting experiences and gift cards to their favorite shops and restaurants.

There is no doubt about it; COVID-19 has changed the face of the world we live in. Moving forward we must accept what is, let go of what was, and Believe in what can be.

For questions or more information on how you can participate, please contact the UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation office at 352-751-8871. You can also visit our website at tvrhfoundation.org, or follow our Facebook page for the latest updates.

In 2017 the Auxiliary Foundation Board approved a contribution of $100,000 to establish an Endowment Fund. Since that time, the fund has increased to its current value of over $401,000 and will continue to grow with planned gifts from supporters of the Hospital and the Auxiliary Foundation that will allow the Endowment to flourish. Those gifts can take the form of bequests, charitable gift annuities, appreciated securities, insurance policies, and appreciated real estate. Endowment donors are generally interested in leaving a legacy and providing for the long-term future of the organization they support. Donations to the fund are invested by professional money managers and only the income from those investments can be used.

DR. UPADYA – CARDIAC AND VASCULAR CONSULTANTSDr. Shrikanth Upadya is a partner in the Cardiac and Vascular Consultants practice. The practice was established in May 2011 and has grown to serve patients in their communities and local area hospitals, including UF Health The Villages® Hospital. Another partner in the practice is Dr. Vishnu Yelamanchi. Both Dr. Upadya and Dr. Yelamanchi have said, “We want UF Health The Villages® Hospital to be considered a world-class medical facility. This is why we contribute funds to the Auxiliary Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to maintain and support the quality of patient care, and we are committed to helping achieve that goal.”

The Board Certified cardiologists of the Cardiac and Vascular Consultants specialize in providing excellent patient-centered care. These doctors have been professionally trained with advanced cardiac and vascular diagnostic and therapeutic techniques at the most prestigious programs and universities around the world. According to Dr. Upadya and Dr. Yelamanchi, “We strive to be the best at what we do. Our work is most satisfying when we see smiles on the faces of patients who are able to return to active lifestyles.” The mission of the practice is to provide compassionate, comprehensive medical care, and maintain the highest level of service and confidence for patients and referring physicians.

The practice provides a full range of diagnostic and interventional cardiology and vascular services including heart and lower extremity catheterizations, angioplasty, stents, pacemakers, defibrillators, and ablations. The diagnostic imaging centers of the practice are nationally accredited by the American College of Radiology, are furnished with state-of-the-art medical equipment, and are operated by highly trained, Board registered, staff.

Dr. Upadya said, “Our practice focuses on leadership in the fields of cardiology and vascular medicine. Not only do our doctors have excellent credentials, but they are also up-to-date on the latest procedures and technology. Another reason for our support of the Auxiliary Foundation is to help it provide the necessary leading-edge equipment for UF Health The Villages® Hospital. We urge other medical practices to donate to the good work of the Foundation.”

UF HEALTH THE VILLAGES® HOSPITAL AUXILIARY FOUNDATION MAKES AN ITALIAN CONNECTIONWhen Tony Licate, president of The Benvenuto Americans of Italian Heritage Club, met his wife, Jeanne, 18 years ago he was looking for an Italian connection. After being introduced to Jeanne by a mutual friend, he asked, “Your last name is Ricci. Is that Italian?” He knew her last name was Ritchie, and it was an Irish name, but a connection was made. They have been happily married for 15 years.

In 2010, Tony and Jeanne, residents of The Village of Sunset Ridge, joined with other Villagers seeking an Italian connection and formed The Benvenuto Americans of Italian Heritage Club. Tony explained that couples may join the club if one member of the pair is Italian. The group meets the second Tuesday of each month from October to May. According to Tony, The Benvenuto Americans of Italian Heritage Club has three goals. The first is to raise money for charity, the second is to enjoy Italian food at every meeting and, finally to create a close-knit community. “We now have about 133 members,” Tony added.

Since it was founded, the group has successfully raised funds for many worthy causes in The Villages® through a series of bocce tournaments and raffles. Last year The Benvenuto Americans of Italian Heritage Club decided to connect with UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation as event sponsors. “We wanted the recipient of our fundraising to partner with us on the actual event planning,” Tony explained. “Dick Campbell, the Foundation president, is terrific. He is hands on.” Jeanne added, “In February we raffled two orchestra level seats to see Andrea Bocelli in Tampa, along with an overnight stay for two at the Embassy Suites. Each ticket was $50.00 and only 100 were offered. Dick was instrumental in selling the last few.”

Both Tony and Jeanne also believe that it is important for members of the community to support The UF Health The Villages® Hospital. As Tony observed, “We are all probably going to end up there, in one way or another. We want to see it to continue to get better.”
