The Villages® Regional Hospital is a part of Central Florida Health. Great excitement filled the air at the annual Scholarship Awards Reception as recipients and their families were welcomed by Dick Campbell, President of The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. This was the fifth year that the Foundation has granted scholarships to area high school seniors and hospital team members who are planning to attend an institution of higher education to pursue or advance their careers in the medical field. Several Foundation board members and scholarship donors were in attendance to congratulate the recipients. Liltaryra Gordon, an award recipient and a senior at Wildwood Middle High School said, “This scholarship means the world to me. It will allow me to study for a career in Physical Therapy that would not be possible without this financial support.” Eleven high school seniors and five hospital team members received scholarships. Team member scholarships benefit recipients and our community in multiple ways. One-time scholarships for team members provide much needed support which enables them to advance in their careers. In addition, the program also meets the need to fill open positions within the organization and develop valuable team members. This process allows the hospital the opportunity to recruit, develop and retain new staff to improve patient care. One of the hospital team members was Karen Barron from the Emergency Department (ED). Karen said, “I have 23 years of experience as a paramedic in Miami, but I have always wanted to become a registered nurse. This scholarship will help fund my education, and I will still be able to work full-time in the ED. I sincerely thank the Foundation for this award.” TVRH Auxiliary Foundation Board Chairman, Scott Sander, presented certificates to the scholarship recipients, along with Gary Kadow, President of Project SOS (Support Our Solders). Project SOS awarded four of the sixteen scholarships. This organization’s Military Family Scholarship is unique in that it not only honors the accomplishments of the student receiving the award, but also the military veteran family member who has sacrificed and served in the United States Armed Forces. The amount awarded at this reception totaled over $97,000. Scott said, “It is great to present these awards and see the young folks make a commitment to contribute to our community.” In an effort to assure that students achieve their goals, the Foundation has instituted a continuing scholarship with funding for up to four years, provided that students remain eligible academically. It was noted by Dick that this program has flourished since its beginnings in 2015 due to the generosity of the scholarship donors. To raise funds and create awareness of the services which our hospital

provides to maintain and improve the quality of patient care.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEWe are grateful to have so many members of our community contribute to TVRH Auxiliary Foundation in a variety of ways. Our major fundraising event continues to be the annual Hearts for Our Hospital Gala which this year raised over $400,000. Please make sure to mark your calendar for next year’s celebration which will take place on February 8, 2020.

Throughout the year we also raise money for the hospital through gift shop and cafe sales, bequests, Room Naming sponsors, membership in our Royal Palm and Touchstone societies. In addition, revenue is generated by Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe which is currently undergoing a major expansion. Two other fundraising initiatives I would like to spotlight at this time are our cycling event and the commemorative brick program.

Each fall we present the annual Hearts for Our Hospital Big Bike Weekend. Last November, we hosted over 350 cyclists from all across the U.S. and Canada to ride one of five route options ranging from

10 miles to 100 miles. This event raised net proceeds of over $70,000 and has helped to provide over $414,000 in scholarships to local high school seniors and hospital team members. The day before the actual ride visitors can explore an expo that showcases local bicycle retailers and clubs as well as related health care vendors. We invite you to participate in the 5th annual event on November 8-10, 2019. I want to wholeheartedly thank our board member Dave Taylor for bringing this event to us and working hard to grow it each year.

Maybe one of the hospital’s best kept secrets is the Sharon L. Morse Celebration Garden. Quietly nestled between The Villages® Regional Hospital and the Sharon L. Morse Medical Center is a beautiful, serene garden. It features a lovely waterfall and comfortable, shaded seating areas. In addition to providing respite, it also offers the opportunity to recognize and celebrate life with commemorative bricks. Each brick may be engraved with three lines and up to 20 characters per line for a donation of only $100. Please stop by and visit this extraordinary garden and consider memorializing or honoring your loved ones. Special thanks to our board member Cindy Parr Rabley for spearheading this incredible program.

On behalf of the Auxiliary Foundation board and staff, thank you for your continued support.

Scott Sander, CPA, ChairmanThe Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation

Schedule Your “Behind-the-Scenes” Visit

Who would go to a hospital if they didn’t need to? The answer is easy - anyone who’s interested in seeing the future of healthcare in The Villages. TVRH Auxiliary Foundation invites you to experience a “behind-the-scenes” look at our various service lines and training resource center.

Three separate tours are available. The general hospital tour will include an overview of the entire facility. Specialized tours of the Digital Vascular Surgery Suite and the Simulation Training Lab will highlight state-of-the-art technology in each of these areas.

For a general hospital tour, contact Deidre Rosemond at (352) 751-8173. If you are interested in learning more about the Digital Vascular Surgery Suite or the Simulation Training Lab, contact Dick Campbell at (352) 751-8871.

CELEBRATING OUR CROWN JEWELSHow do you show your appreciation to your volunteers when you have over 950 dedicated people in service throughout the year? You host not one, but four Volunteer Appreciation Luncheons. “For the first time this year we divided the departments and held four luncheons at Katie Belle’s,” said Lou Emmert, TVRH Auxiliary Foundation Volunteer Coordinator.

The luncheons were in April which is National Volunteer Month. Keynote speakers were Michael Pittman, Chief Clinical Officer and Site Administrator from TVRH, along with representatives from Central Florida Health including Phyllis Baum, Vice President and Chief Quality Officer, Don Henderson, President and CEO, and Amie Richason, Vice President of Human Resources. “We had a different speaker for each luncheon,” said Lou. “I think it shows the high esteem the volunteers

are held in when the executive staff takes their time to attend and speak at our appreciation luncheons.”

In addition to the keynote speakers, Auxiliary Foundation President Dick Campbell attended all four luncheons. He gave an update on the Foundation’s happenings recognizing the significant role the volunteers represent in attaining those accomplishments.

Each year, the Auxiliary honors five individuals and one volunteer team with a special recognition. All volunteers are eligible to be nominated for the awards by their peers and hospital staff. A committee comprised of Auxiliary members determines the final selections. While there may be a small number of awards available, every volunteer shines as a crown jewel for the Auxiliary Foundation.

JOHN TRUTH & REFLEXX NETWORKING FOR A CAUSE

The Sharon L. Morse Celebration Garden was the location of an April reception for donors in the Commemorative Brick Program to view the bricks they recently purchased in honor of loved ones. This program was created in 2011 by The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation to recognize and celebrate the lives of those who have gone before us, honor someone and celebrate an anniversary, a marriage, or a birth. Foundation Board members, Cindy Parr Rabley and Diane Kupchak, and President Dick Campbell, were present to greet donors and answer any questions. Ms. Bennie Exum, a nurse at The Villages® Regional Hospital, was especially pleased with the Brick Program. She said, “The Auxiliary Foundation has provided me with a way to honor my two granddaughters. It is a lasting tribute to them, which I greatly appreciate. Keep up the good work.”

There are hundreds of red bricks in the Celebration Garden. When bricks are purchased, they are engraved with a message from the donor, and placed in the Garden. Marilyn Ten Eyck has purchased several bricks to celebrate the life of her husband, Jerry, and others. Marilyn expressed her gratitude for the staff in the Foundation Development Office. “They are highly professional and caring individuals. They do great work with this Commemorative Brick Program to honor members of my family,” she said.

Dr. Angel Kelley-Shelby purchased a brick in honor of her recently deceased husband, Lt. Col. Frank Shelby. She said, “This serene garden is a perfect way of providing a lasting legacy in celebration of a person’s life. The Auxiliary Foundation is to be commended for the steps it has taken to offer this brick program to us.”

The Foundation has recognized that our pets are a part of our family, so a section of the Garden has been devoted to bricks for animals. The special pet section in the pathway includes bricks to celebrate the lives of dogs, cats, and horses, to name a few. This is a thoughtful way to remember our most treasured friends. For more information about the Commemorative Brick Program, contact Cindy Parr Rabley at (352) 408-456 or Bonnie Albion at (352) 751-8871.

At a recent Hospitality Industry Networking event hosted by HarborChase of The Villages Crossings, TVRH Auxiliary Foundation was delighted to be selected as the “charity of choice” by Alexander Powell, Executive Director at HarborChase. “We enjoy the relationship we have with the Foundation and appreciate the great work they are doing for our community”, shared Alexander, pictured below with Shelly Scarbrough and Deidre Rosemond from the Foundation.

The networking event, sponsored by Cornerstone Hospice, is held monthly and hosted by various organizations within the community. Attendees pay a small fee which is then awarded to a charity of the hosting organization’s choosing. Networking not only provides opportunities for individuals and organizations to cultivate relationships, it also helps to bring people together who believe in giving back.

The roots and sounds of the legendary Bob Marley were vibrant as

orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Williams, Jr. and his band, known to many as John Truth & Reflexx, recently rocked a packed house at

the La Hacienda Recreation Center.

The tribute performance is part of an exciting series of concerts that John Truth Productions and Advanced Orthopedics Institute is hosting to benefit The Villages®Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. Proceeds from these events help support the Foundation’s mission to purchase hospital equipment, enhance programs and services, as well as provide scholarships to area high school seniors and hospital team members.

We would like to recognize and thank the generosity of our event sponsors, as well as those who attended. Thank you for your support!

In 2017 the Auxiliary Foundation Board approved an initial investment of $100,000 to establish an Endowment Fund. Since that time, the fund has increased to its current value of over $372,000 and will continue to grow with planned gifts from supporters of the Hospital through the Auxiliary Foundation. Those gifts can take the form of bequests, charitable gift annuities, appreciated securities, insurance policies, and appreciated real estate. Endowment donors are generally interested in leaving a legacy and providing for the long-term future of the organization they support. Donations to the fund are invested by professional money managers and only the income from those investments can be used.

CHARITABLE GIVING

The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation is pleased to announce the 5th annual Hearts for Our Hospital Bicycle Challenge/Big Bike Weekend, which will take place Friday through Sunday, November 8-10, 2019. The start of each day’s events will take place at the La Hacienda Recreation Center, located at 1200 Avenida Central, in Lady Lake, near the Spanish Springs Town Square. The ride directors for the event are Pat and Lori Gillis. They said, “This Big Bike Weekend will be the best one yet. We will have five different routes (10, 20, 32, 64, and 100-mile distances), with plenty of well-stocked rest stops, on-course mobile support and gear teams to help with flat tires or other mechanical problems, or simply get riders back to the finish line safe and sound. This will be a unique cycling experience for all who participate”.

On Friday, a free Cycling Expo and Health Fair will take place from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. including top-brand demo bikes that will offer e-bikes for test rides. Saturday will be full of fun with the five route options and at the finish line riders will have a lunch of subs, ice cream and drinks. At Das Krankenhaus Biergarten, free beer and wine will await the finishers and Oktoberfest tunes will get those tired toes a tappin’ once again. On Sunday, riders can explore more cycling in The Villages through free Club Rides sponsored by the Sumter Landing Bicycle Club. Participants in the Bicycle Challenge must be at least 12 years of age on the date of the event. Riders are encouraged to put teams together for some friendly competition. Team categories include restaurants, wealth management companies, health services agencies, cycling and Rotary clubs and colleges. In addition to bragging rights, a traveling trophy is awarded to the team raising the most money.

Last year, over 350 riders took part in the Big Bike Weekend, and raised $70,000 in net proceeds for The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to raise funds and create awareness of the services which our hospital provides to maintain and improve patient care. For more information, and to register for the events, visit the website at www.H4HBikeWeekend.com.

CART WORLD

ELECTRIC SERVICES, INC.

Page 6

Bill Andrews is the President of Cart World golf cars, an Authorized Club Car Dealer. Club Car is the largest manufacturer in the golf car industry, and this year celebrates its 60th anniversary. Bill acquired Cart World in 1996, and in 2010 acquired another Club Car dealership in Hilton Head, SC. Bill noted, “Together, our two dealerships are industry leaders in retail golf and commercial sales as well as service. Cart World is this area’s longest serving authorized Club Car dealer, and has been serving the Tri-County region for over 30 years.” Both Cart World and Club Car of Hilton Head are multiple winners of Club Car’s National Retail Dealer of the year award, as well as being designated as Black and Gold Dealers, Club Car’s highest honor. In addition to golf carts, Cart World offers a full line of street legal, commercial utility, and off-road vehicles. Cart World is proud to supply vehicles to many area businesses, municipalities, public schools, and colleges, including The University of Florida Athletic Department. Cart World also has a Rental Division offering late model Club Cars in 2, 4, 6, and 8 passenger configuration.

Cart World’s service technicians attend Club Car service schools to stay updated on the latest in golf car technology and service techniques. Cart World’s mobile service fleet provides service at the customer’s home or place of business.

Club Car offers both gas and electric vehicles. The gas cars, powered by the largest engine in the industry, are quiet, powerful, and fuel efficient. The electric cars are smooth, quiet, and provide extensive travel ranges. Club Car is the only major manufacturer to feature an all aircraft-grade aluminum chassis, which is rust proof and corrosion resistant. It is light weight, strong, and carries a life-time warranty.

Bill and his wife, Jeanne, are natives of Ocala, and graduates of the University of Florida. They have two children: West and Martha Lyn. Bill said, “My wife and I are Room Naming sponsors, and support the great work that the Foundation carries out to maintain and improve the quality of patient care at our regional hospital. We encourage other business owners to do the same.”

Electric Services, Inc. (ESI) was founded in Leesburg, Florida in 1965, and has built and installed electrical systems throughout the southeastern USA. President Steve Strong said, “Here in Florida, we have designed and engineered electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems for countless commercial and industrial projects. We have also been involved with the expansion of The Villages® Regional Hospital. We have witnessed what the Auxiliary Foundation has

done to provide needed equipment for the hospital, and we are proud supporters”.

As a certified electrical contractor and engineering firm, ESI maintains a staff of nearly 300 electricians, engineers, designers, CADD operators, estimators, project managers, technicians, and support personnel. The 4 to 1 ratio of licensed electricians to engineers allows ESI to remain ready to design and develop systems for every size and level of complexity. Ongoing training assures that the technical staff stays current with the latest regional and national codes and safety procedures. ESI has grown to three locations: Orlando, Clearwater, and the home base of Leesburg. The massive 67,000 square foot distribution center in Leesburg assures material availability and quality control through all project phases. ESI has been instrumental in the development of The Villages in addition to the work on the regional hospital. It helped build several buildings in Spanish Springs, including The Sharon, and is now working on the new emergency facility in Brownwood.

President Strong commented, “We are strong believers in being good community development partners with The Villages® Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. We are Room Naming sponsors, and have actively supported the annual Hearts for Our Hospital Gala. Whether it is cutting-edge simulation for medical personnel, or equipment to enhance patient care, we know that the Foundation is using our donations wisely, and will continue to do so. This partnership is special to me”.

MENTORS MATTERIn 2015, TVRH Auxiliary Foundation established a scholarship program for local high school seniors and hospital team members pursuing and/or advancing their careers in healthcare related studies.

The premise of the Foundation’s scholarship program is to award scholarships annually to area high school seniors and TVRH team members who are planning to pursue a career in the healthcare field, resulting in an associate’s, bachelor’s and/or master’s degree, or a certification program. The field of possible studies is broad and includes educational opportunities in both clinical and non-clinical areas.

Encouraging high school seniors to enter medical-related fields is important to our community and the development of our future healthcare workforce. To help ensure a student’s success, the Foundation has adopted a multi-year scholarship approach whereby each high school senior who receives a scholarship will continue to receive funding for up to four years, provided they maintain all eligibility requirements.

A group of 10 volunteer mentors develop and remain supportive relationships with the students. Each mentor has one to five students who they keep in contact with. Through emails, phone calls and text messages the mentors and students discuss classes, grades and any concerns or challenges.

The first high school student to ever receive a scholarship graduated from nursing school last May. She told her mentor, Paul Farineau Chair of the Scholarship Program, that “Each semester the scholarship has helped me so much, especially after my mom passed away.” Gary Kadow who also serves on the committee expressed that all three of his mentees are achieving grade point averages of 3.4 or higher and are considering working at The Villages® Regional Hospital upon completion of their studies.
