FOUNDATION PRODUCTION EVALUATION - QUESTION 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My opening sequence has represented individual social groups in separate instances and in different amounts.

This refers specifically to class, status, race, age and gender

CLASS AND STATUS

Throughout my media product ‘Hidden’, class and status is exhibited and contrasted in two separate ways by the two characters. The fact that there are only two main characters in the entire sequence assists in identifying these differences more easily. The setting where the planning of the robbery takes place looks dirty, damp and deserted suggesting he is an individual of less affluence. Also through the clothing of the two characters, class and status is exposed. The robber wears a hoodie, tracksuits and trainers in comparison to the innocent, more wealthy looking character who wears jeans, suede shoes and a nice looking jacket. I would classify the robber as a lower class citizen in comparison to the innocent character who I make out to be middle-upper class.

CLASS AND STATUS EVIDENCE

This is a screenshot of a section in my opening sequence where Roby is running through the park to hide the stolen object.

As seen in the image, he (Roby) is wearing a plain colored hoodie, black tracksuit trousers and white trainers. These are quite cheap, plain items of clothing which suggests he is perhaps a lower class citizen.

CLASS AND STATUS FURTHER EVIDENCE

These two screenshots of my opening sequence show the clothing of who I perceive to be a middle-upper class individual (Hector). This theory is supported by the jeans and ‘Abercrombie and Fitch’ jacket (an expensive brand).

RACE

Race isn’t a prominent social group in my opening sequence as there were no variations of ethnicities or nationalities - all characters involved were British white individuals.

Roby Crean Hector Crean

AGE

The ages exhibited in my opening sequence are of the younger generation. Roby is playing an early 20 year old individual and Hector playing a 17 year old. These ages are exploited via the clothing of the characters. Both actors are 17 years old.

GENDER

All of the actors in my opening sequence are male perhaps showing inequality between the males and females. However, in thriller categorized films, most actors tend to be of the male genre and so to support the sense of realism in the opening sequence, I selected only male actors.
