VisionTo make a difference to the day to day lives of those suffering from mental illness, extending to include their carers by creating public awareness and acceptance and in doing so achieving individual self worth. In addition, run events to raise funding for existing programs to continue to operate effectively and efficiently, expanding to reaching our ultimate goal facilitating our own workshops and accommodation facility.

MissionBy holding events that create awareness and funding we are able to channel this through to organisations currently providing quality support programs with excellent facilities but at the same time, building resources and engaging facilitators to drive our own Foundation Shine workshops in ultimately a facility of our own.

Organisations and facilities that we have been able to assist include - MIFSA, ACEDA, Catherine House, MOSH, ADESA, Diamond House, Hutt St, Carer Support, Helen Mayo House, Flinders and the work continues.

StrategyMental illness is prevalent in such broad forms, mostly invisible to the eye, with many too afraid to share their condition and so suffer in silence – so too their carers. Sufferers are scared of discrimination, judgment and non acceptance by the community at large. The strategy of Foundation Shine to rectify this, by increasing awareness, acceptance, self worth of sufferers and assist with raising funds to aid organisations already supplying quality solutions and further, to ultimately create and operate our own programs with our long term goal a facility to deliver these workshops and provide superior accommodation and respite.

The Workshops

Flower ArrangingThese workshops to be conducted by Robyn May, one of the Foundation members. Robyn has over 20 years experience in floral design having owned her own business which employed six staff. Attendees have the opportunity to learn the basics of floral design and further create designs using fresh flowers and foliage which they take home. It is anticipated that these workshops will not only give the attendees an enjoyable regular experience where they can communicate with others, but may also lead to employment in that area. Robyn has been actively running these classes through groups Foundation Shine Inc currently assists.

Art Classes

We have witnessed first hand how effective art can be in promoting self worth and strength through Emma Codrington and her work with ACEDA, in presenting her exhibition entitled Chrysalis. Emma had suffered from a mental illness in the form of anorexia. It is Emma’s belief that her creativity gave her the self worth and strength to overcome her eating disorder and now help others through her exhibitions and book. Foundation Shine Inc. have actively supported Emma and ACEDA with this important project. As a result of this experience Robyn and Sharon thought through the value of art and craft workshops. Both having excellent contacts who could deliver interesting and fulfilling classes in painting and making pieces, including sewing, patchwork and general craft. These sessions would not only deliver learning skills, but companionship and fun. In the meantime we continue to assist existing facilities that Foundation Shine Inc offers support to that currently do have art classes running.

Research has shown that music,

particularly drumming,

can improve mood states,

enhance capacity to concentrate

and also reduce symptoms of

depression and anxiety.

Music

There is no doubting the incredible effect music has on all our lives. Again, like the art classes, we have witnessed sessions where on a weekly basis music classes are offered and are well attended by regulars at MIFSA. These sessions become extremely important to every day life and give participants something to really look forward to. Catherine House also facilitate choir sessions and have formed their own group regularly performing in their repertoire is their own “Calling all Catherines” Foundation Shine Inc has been fortunate enough to have the Catherines perform at events. Again, Foundation Shine Inc has actively assisted with this program at MIFSA and can see scope for our own workshops. We have, in fact, engaged ‘RECOVERY’ MIFSA’s very own band to perform at one of the functions we held at The Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Sharon Middleton, one of the Foundation members is an accomplished singer having released c.d.’s and sung at many corporate functions and is just one of many that we would look to assist in the delivery of these workshops.

Cooking Classes

Foundation Shine Inc was very fortunate in being able to assist MIFSA financially with the relocation of it’s community kitchen project. The kitchen gives attendees basic cooking skills and also the opportunity to learn about the preparation and combination of different foods to promote a healthy lifestyle . The interaction with others, from what we have witnessed creates enormous benefits with confidence and self esteem with an evident ‘buzz’ filling the room. It is an important meeting place and hub within MIFSA. Again, it is our belief, Foundation Shine Inc is well placed to offer cooking classes, nutrition and dietary assistance, food shopping guidance through engaging experts in these fields, as well as promoting our own ‘social hub’. Who knows, the skills and confidence gained through our Cooking workshops could lead to possible employment prospects.

Return to WorkExperienced Human Resource Consultants would be contracted to conduct these workshops. The consultants would provide assistance in writing resumés and conducting mock interviews and overall interview presentation. We have seen the benefits gained at facilities we have financially assisted that have these kind of resources available.

Finance

Consultants would be engaged to provide attendees advice in the area of budgeting and managing financial affairs. The longer term strategy is to raise funds for a premises to provide short-term emergency accommodation as well as a ‘drop-in’ centre.

Pamper Packs

Foundation Shine Inc has discovered the positive impact and benefits of providing organisations caring for those suffering mental ill health with beautifully filled pamper packs. Robyn carefully selects products for inclusion, and wraps them in such a way they are very special and welcomed by all who receive them.

Fund RaisingThe Committee acknowledge that the primary sources of fundraising are dinner functions, movie nights, expos and special events.

Tax StatusGiven Foundation Shine is a tax deductible gift recipient organisation, cash donations will greatly assist. The administration services provided to operate the Foundation day to day are done so on a purely voluntary basis, using resources of the Founders and Committee, thus maximizing every dollar raised is spent on the care, programs and awareness for mental ill health.

Corporate SponsorsCanvassing ongoing to secure important Corporate sponsors to allow the Foundation to grow and reach its goals.

Club SponsorshipThe Corvette Club of SA since 2010, through their Board, Committee and Members have supported Foundation Shine Inc by running rallies, dinners, raffles and conventions. The association has resulted in increased awareness and funding which has greatly assisted in achieving our goals.

Movie NightsLodge sponsored by the Freemasons - Movie Nights. In 2012 we gratefully accepted the assistance of the Lodge in being one of their selected charitable organisations to channel funding from periodic movie nights held through the year. The movie events have become much anticipated by our supporters, being double feature, current release productions.

Dirty Devil Kustoms & Whiteline TransportAnnually the car rally, rockabilly event at Greenfields held in November has become an event that draws crowds from Australia wide. The twilight event that runs into the evening is about music, food, dancing, trader stalls, beautiful cars and special treats that never disappoints. It truly is a display of how through having a good time can also mean helping others who are struggling.

Escape, Relax be Pampered AwardDesigned for sufferers and or carers, a well deserved special treat.Tailored day to suit the recipient to escape fears, fatigue, anxiety, depression – a day of bliss and pampering – a day or experience they would never normally have access to, that so many of us take for granted or the norm. Another vision, an opportunity to make a difference.

A letter of support in the application process

of Foundation Shine to be listed as a

Charitable Organisation

Aceda is a not-for-profit organisation formed in July 2009

through the amalgamation of three long standing service

providers in South Australia with a history extending over

25 years.

Through this amalgamation, services for consumers,

relatives, carers and professionals have been provided

for those living through Panic and Anxiety, Obsessive

compulsive, and Eating disorders.

With nearly 50% of people In Australia experiencing

episodes from one of these disorders at least once in

their lives, to a level that prevents them from actively

participating in work and leisure, the support and referral

service provided by Aceda are continuing to grow in

demand. Government funding is limited and the capacity

for our organisation to expand and provide a variety of

support services Is dependent on the support of the

community, in particular through our fund raising partner,

Foundation Shine.

Through their support we benefit from the contribution

of much needed funds to allow us the flexibility to tailor

further support programs for consumers, relatives, carers

and professionals across South Australia. Foundation

Shine are our major fundraising source and it is through

their efforts we are able to continue to provide these

expanding services.

The Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and supporters

of Aceda all join me in acknowledging the work that

Foundation Shine continue with in their valuable role to

support the services that we provide to the community

of South Australia and support Foundation Shine in their

efforts to be listed as a Charitable Organisation.

Dear Sharon and Robyn,

Thank you once again for including the Mental Illness Fellowship South Australia in your amazing fundraising work.

The MIFSA team, made up of staff, participants, the Board of Management and volunteers, would like to thank you sincerely for your ongoIng hard work and bighearted efforts. The generous donations from FoundatIon Shine allow us to extend services to people who without your assistance would otherwise not receive vital support. Just as importantly, your work provides hope and encouragement to the MIFSA team who draw great inspiration in their daily work from Robyn and Sharon from Foundation Shine, who while not working directly in the mental health services provide support to those who seek mental health support. For all of us at MIFSA it is humbling to know that individuals such as yourselves support and care for the daily struggles of people managing their mental illness and the people that work alongside them, be they family, friends or staff from services such as MIFSA.

Thank you once again,

Natasha Miliotis Chief Executive Officer 27 May 2010

Dear Sharon and Robyn,

I thoroughly enjoyed the Transport

Women Australia Conference

Breakfast, on Saturday 15 March.

Those who attended the event were

very generous and kind in their interest

about my trek and the work that we do

at Catherine House.

It was lovely too, to see how warm

the group were when you spoke too

Sharon it was obvious that they admire

and appreciate you very much. And,

having your both there to present to

me the very generous $15,000 cheque,

to pay for the refurbishment of our

new training centre, was really special.

Please find attached your receipt.

You are both women of great heart,

infectious energy and give out such a

generous spirit to those who are finding

life difficult. Given how busy your

lives are it is quite remarkable; highly

admirable.

The new Shining Star Training Room

is now in use and we are just waiting

for our handyman to hang up the

Foundation Shine Inc. plaque to let

all the women, who will use the area,

of the kindness that exists in the

community to enable them to transform

their lives. Once it is in place we will

contact you and arrange a 'photo

opportunity' for a story in our Winter

(June) Newsletter.

It is on behalf of these women, our

Board, staff and volunteers that I

sincerely thank you again for your

ongoing and substantial generosity to

the work of Catherine House.

We welcome any enquiry from
