Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time/Décimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Page 3

June 10th, Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Although we have begun Ordinary Time two weeks ago, today, we begin the Ordinary

cycle of Sunday Scripture readings. Throughout this Ordinary Season, which concludes on December 1st, we will be reflecting on our call to live out our Catholic Faith that has been given to us at our baptism. How do we apply our faith in our everyday life? How do we go out into the world and keep our identity as disciples of Jesus? This is the very theme I covered for years as teacher of 8th graders preparing to graduate. I preached this to the graduates of Pomona Catholic at the graduation Masses. As they prepare to leave the protected environment their Catholic School and go out into the bigger world of high school, college, and the adult world, I try to equip them with tools of discipleship so that they will know how to live a “moral life,” a “spiritual life,” a “life of holiness.” The working definition of a Disciple is – a pupil committed to a special sort of teacher, one who promises to teach important lessons about life. You and I are that pupil committed to the special teacher – Jesus, who promises to teach important lessons about life. The disciple learns by spending time each day with the teacher, watching and carefully observing the teacher, listening to whatever the teacher says, and particularly, trying to follow the teacher’s example. We, as disciples, do this for a purpose – to fulfill our Christian Mission. Our mission is to live the life of Christ in the world and to witness it to every person we meet. We do this because of who our teacher is – Jesus. He is the second person of the Blessed Trinity. He is the Eternal Word of the Father that became flesh, born of the Virgin Mary. He is the full revelation of God and leads us to all truth. How can we fail if we become disciples of so great a teacher? The first two disciples of Jesus were Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, and John. Andrew and John were originally disciples of John the Baptist. John’s sole purpose as the teacher was to prepare his disciples for Jesus. Through his baptism of repentance and his message to prepare the way of the Lord Andrew and John were ready when John the Baptist pointed Jesus out as “the Lamb of God.” Andrew and John followed right away. For John the moment was so decisive that he records the exact hour that he followed the Lord, “it was about 4 in the afternoon.” They would then form the first group of disciples of Jesus, spending time with Him each day so that they would be able to carry out their Christian Mission. Next week I will continue with this theme.

Blessings,

Fr. Steven Guitron

Bendiciones, Padre Steven Guitron

School News PAGINA 4

Not long ago, we celebrated Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. This was the time promised by Jesus when He said He would send the Holy Spirit to give the Apostles the courage not only to come out of hiding and spread the Good News to all the known world, but also to be understood by the many different people who were visiting and living in, and around Jerusalem. For those of us who have ever visited another country and been frustrated by not being able to understand the language, you can imagine how awestruck the people were, who heard the Apostles speaking in their own languages.

This is what the Dual Language Immersion is all about. It’s about giving your children the ability to think, speak, read and write in two of the world’s most widely spoken languages. Can you imagine the advantage these children will have over their monolingual counterparts in the job-world of tomorrow? St. John speaks to us of love- “agape” selfless, sacrificial love– the kind Jesus displayed on the cross. If we truly want our children to have this advantage, we sometimes have to make sacrifices. What would you be willing to give up, sacrifice, so that your child might enjoy this lifetime advantage?

This Sunday, June 10th, after the 9:30, 11:00, & 12:30pm Masses, we will be hosting “Instant Enroll”. For $50, you will receive a free gift and hold your child’s place in this innovative program. Then, at your earliest convenience, come in to the school and complete the registration process. If you are a contributing parishioner, there may also be some substantial advantages for those who qualify.

If your have children, grandchildren, or young extended family members & are interested in our program, don’t miss this one-time opportunity to secure the “gift of tongues” for them.

Keeping Children Safe During Summer

During the summer, children may spend time at a camp or program. It is important to

monitor for potential risks when a child enters a new environment. Ask to see the organizations written policies for the adults who will be supervising your child, check if there are procedures in place for emergencies and make sure there is a system for open communication between parents and organizers/leadership. Taking time to check these and other safeguards is key to building safe and nurturing experiences for children. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS® article “Keeping Children Safe” visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/

THE POPE’S CHOIR FIRST-EVER U.S. NATIONAL TOUR

IN LOS ANGELES ON JULY 23 AT MICROSOFT THEATER

The Pope’s Choir from Rome will perform during their much-anticipated U.S. National Tour at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on July 23 2018. Tickets are now on sale at SistineChapelChoirTour.com or AXS.com. Serving as the Pope’s personal choir, today, the 1500-year old Sistine Chapel Choir is the oldest and most respected active choir in the world today. Officially known as the Cappella Musicale Pontificia Sistina, part of the Choir’s significance is due to its endurance through several centuries, including the Renaissance, which was a fundamental period for the Choir as it found its “theatre” in the Sistine Chapel.
