IN SYMPATHY Please pray for the repose of the soul of Marie Gabel, who died recently. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace. Amen.

Dear parishioners and visitors, This Sunday at 10:30 AM is the annual Mass with the communal anointing of the sick. As was outlined in the bulletins over the past weeks, this sacrament is given to those in need of healing physically, spiritually and/or mentally. The Second Vatican II Council broadened the understanding and reception of this sacrament given only to those who were dying. For most of the older generations, no one sees a Catholic anointed unless present at the bedside of one in extreme illness or dying. I believe it is awesome for more to see for several reasons. Firstly, those being anointed know there are others present to pray for them. Secondly, there is healing that takes place not only for the ones being anointed but those who observe it. Lastly, all see the power of God at work. Let us all join together to pray for healing especially those being anointed this day. May the tender compassion and love of God be with them, and may they know that God is with them in their sufferings. Thank you and God bless you. Msgr. Stoetzel The intercession this week is to pray for the sick and suffering especially members of our families and parish family. ANNOINTING OF THE SICK The annual Mass with the anointing of the sick is this Sunday, July 9th at 10:30 AM. Those Catholics who have major illnesses, preparing for major surgery, aging, and dying should receive it. For those who will be anointed, please make sure you approach one of the members of the sacred worship committee to be pinned with a mark so it is known who will be anointed, and please sit in one of the pews in front.

MASS INTENTIONS

KNIGHTS OF ST. JOSEPH The Knights of St. Joseph pray during the month of July, which is dedicated to the Precious Blood, that all individuals as they meditate on the Sorrowful Mystery of the Most Holy Rosary, come to a deeper appreciation and understanding of Jesus’ sacrifice, which has won for us eternal life. The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood which the Savior shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at His glorious Resurrection; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of His risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Father in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beautifies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it.

ST. PIO RELICS News was recently released that the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman will be one of many sites in North America to host the relics of St. Pio (formerly known as Padre Pio of Pietrelcina San Giovanni Rotondo). The relics will be here at the Cathedral on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Veneration will begin at 9:00 am and will stop for the 12:10 pm Mass and then resume until the 7:00 pm Mass that will be held as the closing event for this. For the time being, all questions are to be directed to the Diocese of La Crosse, who h a s a n e m a i l s e t u p f o r questions: [email protected]. Individuals are also welcome to call Deborah Brannon at the Diocese of La Crosse with any questions they may have at: 788-7700 and ask for Bishop’s Office. Weekly Message From

Peter makes his confession of faith in the Gospel, when the Lord’s question turns from the general to the specific. At first, Jesus asks: “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” (Mt 16:13). The results of this “survey” show that Jesus is widely considered a prophet. Then the Master puts the decisive question to his disciples: “But you, who do you say that I am?” At this point, Peter alone replies: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” To confess the faith means this: to acknowledge in Jesus the long-awaited Messiah, the living God, the Lord of our lives. Today Jesus puts this crucial question to us, to each of us, and particularly to those of us who are pastors. It is the decisive question. It does not allow for a non-committal answer, because it brings into play our entire life. The question of life demands a response of life. For it counts little to know the articles of faith if we do not confess Jesus as the Lord of our lives. Today he looks straight at us and asks, “Who am I for you?” Along with Saint Peter, we too renew today our life choice to be Jesus’ disciples and apostles.

FEED MY LAMBS Our diocese will celebrate its sesquicentennial on March 3, 2018. In anticipation of this celebration, a tiny bit of diocesan history will be presented in this space from time to time. We have a rich history, not only in the growth of the diocese, but also in the development of Wisconsin. How and where were parishes built by parishioners who were fur traders, lumbermen, miners, farmers, dairymen? How did their professions demand the growth of industry, transportation, and social adaptation? How did the Church meet the needs of the family, immigrants, poverty, and persecution? Who taught the children? Who were the early missionaries? Who were the early religious who established schools and hospitals?

The commemorative book, Feed My Lambs speaks to some of these issues from the parish perspective. This book, which will be available in the fall of 2017, is a chronology of parish and diocesan development under each of our ten bishops and features a parish written history and pictures of each of the 158 parishes in the diocese today. Within the book are historical recreations that can be removed from pockets throughout the book—it might be a hand written letter from Bishop Flasch or a memorial card of a 9/11 victim.

LA CROSSE CHESTERTON SOCIETY The La Crosse Chesterton Society will gather on Thursday, July 13, from 7:00-9:00 pm, at Piggy’s (501 Front St South) in the smokeless smoking room to discuss The Three Tools of Death, chapter 12 out of The Innocence and Wisdom of Father Brown authored by G.K. Chesterton. Join fellow Chestertonians and find out why anyone would want to kill a “cheerful Scotsman.” And then there is the man servant of the deceased of many years of service, dressed in black and hands always clad in monstrous black gloves. Hmm, things are not as they seem from outward appearances. Come find out on July 13 the incongruent events leading up to Sir Aaron Armstrong’s demise and how Father Brown is always many steps ahead of Detective Gilder and his underlings in solving a crime.

LA CROSSE COUNTY FOODSHARE OUTREACH La Crosse County Foodshare Outreach is a program sourced out of La Crosse County Department of Human Services. It is a collaborative effort between Hunger Task Force, CouleeCap and the La Crosse Area Family Collaborative to address food insecurity in La Crosse County. Our goal is to decrease food insecurity, and increase access to healthy, nutritious food by providing information about FoodShare and application assistance to those in need. We focus on helping people at food pantries and other community agencies throughout the county of La Crosse. We assist people in applying for FoodShare benefits through ACCESS and create an understanding about the benefits of participating in the Foodshare Employment Training Program (FSET) program. The FSET program helps members build job skills, obtain jobs, and meet the Able Bodied Adult Without Dependents (ABAWD) work requirements from the state of WI. Also, we assist current FoodShare members with renewals, proof assistance and six month report forms. We also hope to link people to other services and supports when a need is identified. Call or Text FoodShare Program Outreach Coordinator Susan Fabian, at 608/386-0289 to find out how you can help people apply in La Crosse County at an outreach location.
