Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

Every people’s organization has one, so why not God’s? I refer to God’s “honor roll” of the saints in heav-

en–the canonized and the non-canonized persons “up there” with Our Lord. Earthbound honor rolls often

hang on a wall at a company’s headquarters; or they comprise a monument in marble. Wherever we en-

shrine the memories of our best fellow human beings becomes a sacred place.

Tomorrow, on our national Independence Day, we inevitably honor those first Americans whose special

bravery led them to sign a document making us into an entirely new nation. Declaring us independent of

England, they set the course for the world’s most successful democracy. It is natural for us to honor

these national heroes of ours.

It is interesting to note that the Person who deserves the most honor from us, is memorialized in a unique

way: in a living sacrament of His Body and Blood. Obviously God wanted it done this way, lest we think

of Jesus as dead and not living among us.

His decision to make us His messengers in our time a tremendous honor, both fascinating and humbling.

He has chosen us, with all our faults and failings, to be on His honor roll. Each generation accepts the

honor, aided by the Holy Spirit. Surely our methods have changed since Apostolic times. We note how

those original pairs went about the land with their sandals strapped and their hearts full of enthusi-

asm! Upon their return, Jesus told them to rejoice that their names were written on heaven’s “honor roll.”

This weekend it is only right to ask ourselves how about our enthusiasm? If there were such a thing as a

“zeal meter” where would the needle land for us? Sometimes, sad to say, we are embarrassed to be

known as a friend of Jesus. We prefer not to witness to Him. We forget our baptismal mission. What a

shame it would be to find out we missed being on Christ’s honor roll. But that doesn’t have to be the story

of our life. The good news is that we always have the chance to change with each new day.

Our Declaration of Independence states that we are “endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable

rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Thus endowed, we as Christians

can be missionaries for God, our Creator, in ways that our liberty makes possible and our happiness inten-

sifies.

First Reading: Isaiah 66:10-14c

The prophet cries out “rejoice” to the people because God’s graciousness and power will become known

to His children. He will comfort His own like a mother.

Second Reading: Galatians 6:14-18

St. Paul boasts in the cross alone. All the ado about whether or not Gentile converts need to be circum-

cised is therefore meaningless. He also refers to his suffering as “the marks of Jesus on his body.”

Gospel: Luke 10:1-12, 17-20, or 10:1-9

St. Luke describes the aspects of the apostolic mission. While travelling in pairs, the missionaries may

have to struggle with adversaries, but they also will bring about a new era of peace. Yet the real prize for

their work is to have their names inscribed in heaven’s honor roll.

COMMUNITY ALLIANCE PROGRAM FOR HOLY FAMILY

Boiling Springs Savings Bank is providing us with a spe-cial opportunity for fund raising. The program is called the Community Alliance Banking Program, and Boiling Springs will make a quarterly donation to Holy Family based on the average balances in all members’ designated accounts. Eligible accounts include checking, savings, CDs, Premium Checking, Money Market and Individual Retirement accounts. Both new and existing accounts are eligible. When you open a new account, inform the Customer Ser-vice Representative that you would like this account to be part of the Community Alliance Program for Holy Family. If you already have an account, visit one of their branches to fill out an enrollment form designating the accounts to be included in the Community Alliance Program for Holy Family. All account information is kept strictly confidential with Boiling Springs and no one from Holy Family has any knowledge of any member’s account information. We en-courage all parish members, teachers and parents to enroll because the more members we have the larger the quarterly bank donation becomes. No money comes from members’ accounts.

MEMORIAL PAVERS PROJECT The response to Holy Family Parish’s Memorial Pavers Pro-ject has been excellent. Our plan is to extend this paved walkway through the coming years as we continue to grow. What a wonderful way to remember a relative or friend, liv-ing or deceased! At the doors of the church are extra order forms. Please remember the Paver contribution is tax deductible. Any questions, call Chairman Ralph Aurilia, 973-951-6508.

If you are interested in becoming an On Line Contributor please go to the Parish website and follow the directions there to sign up.

For Father Fred

A long time ago in the Land of Green

There were more Irish families than you’ve ever seen. God’s beautiful children every day were being born—

But a special one God sent to us on a lovely Irish morn.

O’Learys and O’Connors and O’Gradys all lived there. Fitzpatricks, McCoys, O’Briens and O’Hares.

Their mother was Ireland, the loveliest place on earth. And every year on St. Patrick’s Day, we all celebrate Father Fred’s birth.

For reasons I might not know, Father Fred left the Land of Green. He loved Our Lord Jesus, and His Mother Mary, our Holy Queen. Fred shared that love with many. He proclaimed the Gospels true.

Fred settled in America—our land of red, white and blue.

He’s our friend, this wonderful Irish Priest. His doors are always open.

The love of Christ and His Holy Church From his mouth are daily spoken.

His smile is contagious. We love his Irish wit.

His advice and all his homilies Are always the perfect fit.

He seems to like my whiskey cake

And enjoys my Irish bread. He’s our dear friend—and a Priest forever!

May God bless you, Father Fred!! --Valerie McCoy June, 2016
