FROM THE PASTOR…

Peace and all good! Here we are in the fourth

week of Advent. To all of you who are visiting this

Christmas season, welcome! Know that God loves

you very much and we are delighted to have you as

part of our parish family.

I hope you've had some time to participate in

some of our Advent activities such as the Feast of

the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, or in

our festive Triduum for Our Lady of Guadalupe. At

the moment we are celebrating Simbang Gabi and

Las Posadas. I'd like to say thank you to the parish

and mission staffs, and all our volunteers and minis-

ters who have worked so hard to make these litur-

gies and celebrations possible. I think it's been a

very beautiful time of year.

I know as the holidays progress, all of us, including

myself, can become more busy than usual. Just try-

ing to manage our normal day to day lives can be

stressful enough without all the additional activities

that Christmas brings: shopping for gifts, decorating

our homes, parties with family and friends, trying to

juggle money and budgets and time. If we aren't

careful, the peace and joy of the season can be lost

as we hurry from activity to activity. But I invite you

as I invite myself, to try to take time to reflect on the

deeper meaning of this season.

If you haven't had the Advent you would like to

have had at this point, don't lose hope. It's still not

too late. The point of Advent is to slow down and

spend some time in prayer with Jesus. We still have

another week of Advent. We have many beautiful

liturgies planned for Christmas and throughout the

season. I hope you find graced moments in your life

to participate and reflect on how we live our lives as

disciples of Jesus.

For all the priests, my Franciscan brothers, the

Parish and Mission staffs and ministers and volun-

teers, and the entire Catholic Community of San Luis

Rey, I am wishing you and your family a blessed and

happy Christmas.

Fr. David

The Jubilee Year of Mercy Dec. 8, 2015 through

Nov. 20, 2016 Motto:

“Merciful like the Father”

Pope Francis has said that “Mercy is the beating heart

of the Gospel,” and so has proclaimed

December 8th through

November 20th, 2016 as a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Mission San Luis Rey is one of seven Churches

throughout the Diocese of San Diego designated as Door of Mercy for pilgrims to visit during the

Jubilee. This Holy Door offers an opportunity for anyone to travel through the Holy Door, in case they

cannot visit the one in Rome. The Holy Door represents Christ, who is the door through which

we encounter God, the Father of Mercy.

P A R I S H L I B R A R Y N O T E S

Advent is a time for new understanding, for putting different pieces of God’s revelation together to see the Divine Plan more clearly. Here are some aids for the season and that discernment: Advent Light- Stephen Binz [264.1Bin] provides 30 short reflections for the season. A Child in Winter [Advent, Christmas and Epiphany with Caryll Houselander] - Thomas Hoffman [264.1Hof] shares insight and inspiration for the sea-sons before, during and after Christmas. Biblical Mediations for Advent and the Christmas Sea-son- Carroll Stuhlmueller, CP [264.1Stu]; The Vigil [Keeping Watch in the season of Christ’s coming] - Wendy Wright [264.1Wri] offers scripture and personal reflections for this season of Hope.

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS

“Most people nowadays would not consider love as related in any way to truth. Love is seen as

an experience associated with the world of fleeting emo-tions, no longer with truth. But is this an adequate de-scription of love? Love cannot be reduced to an ephem-eral emotion. True, it engages our affectivity, but in order to open it to the beloved and thus to blaze a trail leading away from self-centeredness and towards another per-son, in order to build a lasting relationship; love aims at union with the beloved. Here we begin to see how love requires truth. Only to the extent that love is grounded in truth can it endure over time, can it transcend the pass-ing moment and be sufficiently solid to sustain a shared journey. If love is not tied to truth, it falls prey to fickle emotions and cannot stand the test of time. True love, on the other hand, unifies all the elements of our person and becomes a new light pointing the way to a great and fulfilled life. Without truth, love is incapable of establish-ing a firm bond; it cannot liberate our isolated ego or re-deem it from the fleeting moment in order to create life and bear fruit.”

SALT & LIGHT RADIO HOUR Lupe Rios Radio Interview

Lupe’s radio interview will be broadcast on Salt and Light Radio Hour with host Deacon Pedro Guevara Mann at www.saltandlighttv.org/radio or in various loca-tions through AM/FM radio and on Sirius XM129. Lupe will discuss his music, work at Mission San Luis Rey Parish and his CD: Lupe Rios - Songs of Advent and Christmas.

FROM SR. GLADYS LOWE, C.PP.S

I wish all my friends at San Luis Rey a wonderful Christ-mas and God’s many blessings throughout the New Year. I am 101-years-old now and well taken care of and not completely helpless. I still walk with the help of a walker to meals and get around, and enjoy playing cards and bingo. It is very hard for me to write cards and letters, so I send you this general greeting. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Sr. Gladys Lowe, C.PP.S.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

As we draw close to the Feast of the Nativity, we hear the great stewardship proclamation twice in today’s second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews: “Behold, I come to do your will, O God!” Who is this Jesus? Who are we that we should follow him? Many want him as a friend, a guide, a king, an advo-

cate. We long to see the face of God. Jesus reveals the nature of God, the servant sent to give us new life in Him. Take time to ponder: Do we have the courage to follow Jesus? To show others the face of God? To say to the Lord: “Behold, I come to do your will?”
