MEMORIES AND DREAMS: Throughout our lives, we retain the lan-guage and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long ab-sence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and prac-tices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incor-porated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure traveling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord’s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to you. Allow Your healing hand to heal them. Touch their soul with Your compassion for others. Touch their Heart with Your courage and infinite love for all. Touch their mind with Your wisdom, that their

mouth may always proclaim Your praise. Teach them to reach out to You in their need, and help them to lead others to You by example. Most lo-ving Heart of Jesús, bring them health in body and spirit that they may serve You with all their strength. Touch gently these lives which You have created, now and forever. Amen.

Gospel: luke 1: 34-45 Many artists have painted this moving scene described by Luke in today's gospel. Mary has made a difficult journey through the hill country to be with her relative Elizabeth, who is several months pregnant. The young woman, bear-

ing in her body the Savior, and the older woman, carrying John the Baptist, embrace each other with tears and laughter. Elizabeth recog-nizes Mary's true identity as "the mother of my Lord." She calls Mary "blessed" three times. Mary is blessed because she trusted that the Lord's words to her would come true. 1.) Mary went to help Elizabeth. Mary then had a happy and joyful experience and was blessed by her cousin. Think of a time when you helped someone. How were you blessed? 2.) Did you recognize some of the words in this reading as part of the Hail Mary?

Administrator’s Corner: December 23, 2012 4th Sunday of Advent: Year - C

How do we awaken to the presence of God on Christmas morning? “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). An amazing truth occurred at the first Christmas. God came and lived among us. Even more amazing is that he continues to live among us. Maybe these tips can help sharpen your awareness of his pres-ence: Begin each day in his presence. When you first wake up in the morning, but before you get out of bed, place yourself in his presence. Take a few minutes to focus on a sacred picture or an image that will help you to “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Seek God’s Word. Start your day with Scripture such as the daily Mass readings or another reading you choose. Ask God to teach you during the day from that selection. Speak to him throughout the day. Picture the Lord next to you throughout your day and talk with him as you experience the day together. Brother Lawrence, a 17th century monk, suggested prayer shouldn’t be confined to formal times. Remove static things in your life. Unconfessed sin clouds our awareness of God’s presence. Do an examination of conscience daily and visit the Sac-rament of Reconciliation at least monthly. Pray. Tell Jesus everything and ask for help in every difficulty. Jesus prom-ised that he will never leave us. God bless you. Fr. Alex

¿Cómo nos despertamos para sentir la presencia de Dios?

“Y el Verbo se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros. Hemos visto su Glo-ria”(Juan 1:14) Es una maravillosa realidad que sucedió cuando en esa primera Navidad el Salvador vendría a habitar entre nosotros. Las siguien-tes pautas nos pueden ayudar a sentir su presencia: Comienza el día en su presencia: Al despertarte y antes de salir de la cama, pónte en su presencia. Toma unos minutos y enfócate en una ima-gen para sentirlo “Paren y reconozcan que soy Dios: (Salmo 47:11)”. Busca la Palabra de Dios: Comienza el día leyendo las Escrituras como las lecturas de la Misa . Pide al Señor que puedas aprender de esa lectura a través del día. Habla con El durante todo el dia: Imagínate que el Señor está a tu lado durante todo el día. Habla con él de tus experiencias diarias. El Hermano Lawrence, un monje del siglo XVII dijo que la oración no debe hacerse solo a determinadas horas. Remueve lo que obstruye tu vida: Confiesa los pecados que evitan que sientas plenamente la presencia de Dios. Haz un Acto de Conciencia di-ariamente y confiésate por lo menos una vez al mes. Ora: Habla con Jesús y pídele que te ayude en todas tus dificultades. Jesús prometió que él nunca nos abandonaría. ¡Que Dios los bendiga! Padre Alex

Coming Up Soon:

These days are filled with so many activities. The malls seem to be open eighteen hours a day. Parties abound. Homes and trees are decorated with festive lights and ornaments. The postal workers deliver hundreds if not thousands of cards each day. Family gather-ings are being planned. Carols ring through the airways. Yes, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. As the season of Advent concludes the same flurry of activity is happening at Epiphany Parish. The liturgy committees are planning our celebrations. Choirs are rehears-ing. The plans for decorating the Church have been finalized. Our Saint Vincent de Paul Society is distributing the gifts from our parish “Giving Tree”. Parish groups are having their parties. Yes, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family. May God shower upon you all His abundant blessing and graces.

For Your Information: TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid-December were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The pe-riod of leisure after the harvest and a whole clus-ter of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Sara-gossa in Spain made a season of fasting manda-tory from December 17 to December 23, ex-actly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connec-tion to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Próximos Eventos:

Feliz Navidad Estamos muy ocupados en estos días. Los centros comerciales abren hasta dieciocho horas al día. Las compras, las fiestas, los arreglos de los arbolitos y las casas con luces festivas y adornitos, los cientos y miles de cartas que los carteros entregan, los villancicos y las reuniones familiares, hacen que sintamos la temporada de la Navidad. Así mismo, ahora que está concluyendo el Adviento, aqui en la parroquia nos estamos preparando. La Comisión de Liturgia ya preparo las celebraciones, los coros están ensayando, los planes para decorar la iglesia ya están listos, San Vicente de Paul esta por entregar los obsequios del “Arbol de Rega-los” y los grupos parroquiales están organi-zando sus fiestas. Ya se siente la Navidad en el aire. Feliz Navidad a todos ustedes y sus familias. ¡Que el Señor los colme de bendi-ciones en estas fiestas!
