HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS

The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tem-pered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his vocation--to do his Father s work--but he also returned home with his parents. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question:

What do we know about Joseph, Mary, and the rest of Jesus' relatives?

Answer: You may see pictures of Joseph, Mary, and a young Jesus on the feast of the Holy Family. What we do know of them has been treasured throughout the ages. Both Joseph and Mary came from the tribe of Judah and were distant descendants of King David. Tradition gives us the names of Mary's parents - Anne and Joachim - and we venerate them as saints. Joseph was a carpenter, and he taught Jesus his trade. We know that St. Eliza-beth was related to Mary, and we call St. John the Baptist Jesus' "cousin." In the Bible, we also see references to Jesus' "brothers and sisters." Who were these people? The most likely theory rests in the language of the time period. The Hebrew people spoke Aramaic. This language had no words for specific family roles. All male relatives were "brother" and all female relatives were "sister." Like many people of his day, Jesus had a large family! So large that he got lost and needed to be found in the Temple. When you think of the Holy Family, remember that Jesus probably had quirky uncles, nosy aunts, doting grandparents, and cousins to play with, just like us!

WORDS TO INSPIRE THE FAITHFUL

"Be attentive to the voice of grace." --St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

The Marriage Jubilee Mass of Thanksgiving with Bishop Gregory Parkes will take place at

the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle on Sunday, February 10th at 3:00pm.

This event honors couples throughout the diocese who will celebrate 25, 50 or more

years of marriage during the 2019 calendar year.

Please RSVP to the parish office by Thursday January 24th.

Please note that this event is limited to:

Married couples who will celebrate their 25th anniversary during 2019

Married couples who will celebrate their 50th anniversary during 2019

Retirement account steps to end the year:

If you are 70 ½ and subject to the RMD, and you plan to make a qualified charitable contributions in 2018, then you should have your IRA custodian make a direct transfer of funds from your IRA to a qualified charity prior to Dec. 31, 2018.

Any contribution up to $100,000 will result in a tax saving to you because the contribution will count as part or all of the RMD. For example, if your marginal tax bracket is 28 percent, if you contribute $1,000 directly to a charity from your IRA, your taxes will be reduced by $280.

This alternative produces tax savings to you only if you don’t itemize.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Do you practice good stewardship with your family? Stewardship is about more than offerings to a church or charity. It is about continually giving of ourselves in a way that gives glory to God. Sharing our gifts with those in our immediate family honors God and is evidence of your gratitude for these people in your life.

How can we effectively accomplish this? One way is to reflect on how the 6 characteristics of an Everyday Steward are present in our family relationships. Are we mindful when we are with our family members? Do we focus on them and their needs rather than our phone or TV? Do we hold up our family in prayer? Their concerns should be our concerns. Do we find ways to show how grateful we are for having them in our lives?

When we find ourselves lacking in gratitude, we should reflect on what life would be like without them. Do we help one another without being asked because we have a gracious heart? It is easy to take for granted those we see all the time. Hospitality is not just for the stranger or guest. Are we committed to a life of stewardship that not only serves as a good example, but also helps our relatives thrive? Using our gifts without wisdom might mean we have little to give to those we love. Finally, do we hold each other accounta-ble for our decisions and shortcomings?

We are on the journey of life together, and no one exists in the Body of Christ alone. Stewardship is about the entirety of our lives. Our faith life is not reserved to Mass on a Sunday. It all begins and ends with those we love.
