December 21, 2014 Dear Friends. “Don’t miss the message,” seems to be the telecommunication warning of our day. Homes are jam- packed with devices to ensure that even the most trivial message gets through. Homes have multiple telephone lines, message recorders, call waiting, call forwarding, cell phones, smart phones, internet, email, fax machines, pagers and various other devices for making sure nothing is missed. It makes you wonder what messages are suddenly and routinely so important that

everyone is so afraid of missing them. God’s messages are the ones that are really important. In this week’s readings God sends a message to us using four different delivery systems to make sure we get it. In 2 Samuel 7, God sends the message through his prophet Nathan to David. The message was an important promise that God would establish an everlasting kingdom, not just a temporary, man-made kingdom, and that he would do it through a descendent of King David. This promise was critically important because this descendent would also usher in the means of a personal relationship with the Father based on loving forgiveness. Years later, God sends another message through a different means, by the angel Gabriel. In this instance it is not delivered to a king but to a lowly maiden, Mary. God’s message to Mary is that she was especially chosen to bear this promised descendent of David, who is coming to establish God’s kingdom. In this message she is given additional insight that this descendent of David was to be the Son of the Most High, the Son of God. What a message! Thankfully, we don’t have to miss it for God recorded it on the pages of his eternal sacred Scripture. As Mary received the angel’s message she then became a unique message bearer herself. For Mary did not simply deliver this message from God, as did Nathan the prophet, or Gabriel the angel, instead she delivered both the final message and the final messenger, as it says in Hebrews, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.” (Hebrews 11:1,2) Jesus is both the final, most thoroughly revealing message of God’s love, and the quintessential messenger. And Mary, full of grace, delivered both God’s Message and God’s final Messenger, her son and our Savior, Jesus. “And if after the announcement of the heavenly messenger the Virgin of Nazareth is called ‘blessed among women’ (cf. Lk. 1:42) it is because of that blessing with which ‘God the Father’ has filled us ‘in the heavenly places’ in Christ. It is a spiritual blessing which is meant for all people and which bears in itself fullness and universality (‘every blessing’)… At the same time, it is a blessing poured out through Jesus Christ upon human history until the end: upon all people.” (Mother of the Redeemer, Pope Paul VI). God went to a lot of trouble in the days before telecommunication to insure that we didn’t miss the Christmas message; sending it through a prophet, an angel, a lowly maiden, and finally an only Son. Many are missing the message, some are waiting for a messenger to bring them the message. Having heard and received both Jesus and his message, we now have the privilege to carry both to people within our sphere of influence. Are we? Stop for a moment and gaze at the people within your natural environments. Who around us should we share the meaning of Jesus with? Communicating the message of Jesus is the Christmas spirit. May Mary our Mother watch over you and protect you always. Your brother in Christ, Father John Francis Murray, C.Ss.R.

Year of Consecrated Life What is the difference between secular (diocesan) priests and religious (consecrated) priests? Answer Secular—or better, diocesan—priests are priests who are ordained for a particular diocese and who serve ordinarily in parishes. This is their main work, although some are engaged in other ministries as well. At their ordination as deacons they incardinate (affiliate) with a particular diocese or archdiocese. At this time they make a promise to obey their bishop and, in the Western Church, to remain celibate. Religious (consecrated) priests are not necessarily more spiritual than diocesan priests. The word refers in this case to the form of life these priests live. All men and women who make public vows in a religious order are called religious. It means that by their vows of poverty, celibate chastity, and obedience, their lives are oriented in a special way to the virtue of religion so that all they do becomes a continual act of the worship of God. This is true of all religious, sisters and brothers as well as priests. Ordinarily they live and pray in community. Many of them wear a religious habit. Often they are engaged in a specialized form of ministry.

JOHN PAUL II Homily Given to the University Students of Rome, (Tuesday, 11 December 2001) Do not keep quiet about Christ's truth: cry it out loudly! Let me repeat once again, especially to you: "Do not be afraid!". "Put out into the deep", and go to meet Jesus confidently, since in him you will be free and safe, even when the paths of life become steep and threatening. Trust in him, young university students from various European nations. Welcoming him means that you open to him the treasures of each culture and nation, with its originality, in the dynamic process of a dialogue enriched by a peaceful exchange of the rich cultural multiplicity you represent. "A voice says, "Cry'" (Is 40,6). The Prophet's exhortation rings out strongly in our congregation. It is addressed to you, who make up the university and cultural world. You too must cry out, dear friends. Indeed, it is impossible to keep quiet about Christ's truth. It asks to be announced, not arrogantly but firmly and proudly. This is the parrhesia of which the New Testament speaks; the cultural allegiance of Christians must bear its mark. Cry out, young university students, by witnessing to your faith! Do not be satisfied with a mediocre life without spiritual enthusiasm that is bent only upon achieving your own immediate personal advantage.

St. John of Kanty, December 23

John Cantius was born in the year 1397 in the Polish town of Kanty (whence his surname). One day, after robbers had deprived him of all his effects, they asked him whether he had anything more. The saint said no, but hardly had they gone when he remembered having sewn some gold pieces inside his clothing; immediately he followed and overtook them. The robbers, astonished at the man's sense of truthfulness, refused to accept the money and returned to him the stolen luggage. To guard himself and his household from evil gossip he wrote upon the wall of his room (after the example of St. Augustine): "Guard against causing trouble and slandering others, for it is difficult to right the evil done." His love of neighbor was most edifying. Often he gave away his own clothing and shoes; then, not to appear barefoot, he lowered his cassock so as to have it drag along the ground. Sensing that his death was near at hand, he distributed whatever he still had to the poor and died peacefully in the Lord at an advanced age.

Saint of the Week

Scripture Reflection for Today Mary said, Yes! How does Mary respond to the word of God delivered by the angel Gabriel? She knows she is hearing something beyond human capability. It will surely take a miracle which surpasses all that God has done previously. Her question, "how shall this be, since I have no husband" is not prompted by doubt or skepticism, but by wonderment! She is a true hearer of the Word and she immediately responds with faith and trust. Mary's prompt response of "yes" to the divine message is a model of faith for all believers. Mary believed God's promises even when they seemed impossible. She was full of grace because she trusted that what God said was true and would be fulfilled. She was willing and eager to do God's will, even if it seemed difficult or costly. Mary is the “mother of God” because God becomes incarnate when he takes on flesh in her womb. Jesus, whom the Father sent from heaven, is true God and true man.

Nurses Corner Now that the holiday season has begun in full force and winter is on the way, our immune systems can be taxed. Here are some strategies to boost our amazing immune systems. EAT HEALTHY! Even though it is okay to indulge,

it should be done in moderation. Make sure you balance those wonderful "not so good for you dishes and sweet things" with whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and low fat dairy. EXERCISE! Exercise increases circulation of disease fighting white blood cells. Physical activity flushes bacteria from the lungs. When you exercise the body temperature rises which can keep bacteria from growing. Activity may also lower stress levels, which can lower the risk of illness. We a so blessed to have Laura, Father Bill and Brother Chris leading the chair exercises on Tuesday and Thursdays in our social hall. Join them, you will be happy you did and will help to prevent illness as well. SLEEP WELL AND STRESS LESS! Lack of sleep reduces the amount of antibodies that fight disease and infection. Some people need more or less sleep, find what is right for you. You should wake up feeling rested. Reducing your stress levels is very important in order to stay well. Prayer, deep breathing, laughter and even a leisurely 10 minute walk can help. MAKE POSITIVE LIFE STYLE CHANGES! If you still smoke, quit. Maintain a healthy weight and drink in moderation. Remember good hand washing! Stay well, blessings and peace, Dianne Barr, RN FCN-Parish Nurse

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena Every Tuesday, after 11 o’clock Mass and at 7 pm Every Tuesday of the year, at Sacred Heart Parish, we hold a Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Since Sacred Heart Parish is in the care of the Redemptorist Fathers, devotion to Our Lady is very much a part of our parish life. The Redemptorists Rule of Life as written by St. Alphonsus

requires that Redemptorists have an extraordinary love and devotion to our Blessed Lady and to promote this devotion to all in their care. Come and be strengthened and blessed by Our Lady. “Never was it known that anyone who fled to her for protection, or sought

her intercession was left unaided. St. Bernard

Jesus revealed to his followers the secrets of God’s Kingdom. In a Mission he does the same for you. He reveals that His kingdom is here and now and that it spells happiness and fullness of life for those who share in it. Happiness often seems to elude us. We would like to change our lives, become “new people”, more alive. The Mission offers us this possibility. Can you make this Mission? Decide today to put off anything that may interfere. You deserve this rich new life God offers you.
