REMEMBRANCE OF OUR DEAR SISTER

Perhaps you sent a card, or sat quietly in the pew.
Perhaps you sent beautiful flowers,
If so, we saw them there.
Perhaps you sent or spoke kind words As any friend could say;
Perhaps you were not there at all
Just thought of us that day. Whatever you did to console the heart,
We thank you so much, whatever the part.
We appreciate the many Masses that will
be said for Sister Mary Bronisia.
Your loving support of us at this time will never be forgotten.
With grateful hearts,
THE BERNARDINE SISTERS Sister Mary Josene
and
Sister Rose Maxine
SPELLING BEE WINNER Saint John Vianney's parish and the Knights of Columbus Council 6571 of Colonia NJ are pleased to report that one of our own eighth graders made it to the KOFC NJ state spelling bee championship that was held in Brick, NJ last month. Sara Tennant of SJV, who had won first place in our local spelling bee event earlier this year, qualified for the State championship by coming in 4th place at the regional championship that was held at St. Ann's church in Raritan, NJ on March 15, 2014. As an alternate she earned the right to go to the State Championship. When one person did not show up at this event, she took his place; so, she became a finalist. By her efforts she has paved the way for one of next year's SJV eighth grade students to go even further, and place in one of the top three spots. We applaud Sara for her effort, and pray for her continuous success in her future endeavors.

Greetings from the Office of the Diaconate
Over the next several months, the Office of the Diaconate will be publishing articles about the ministry of deacon. The articles will be presented in a question and answer format. Our goal is for you to become more familiar with the ministry of deacons, their role in our Church and the requirements for ordination.
Question: I understand that priests receive a salary for their ministry. Do deacons get paid, or are they volunteers?
In general, deacons are not compensated for their ministry as deacons. Sometimes a deacon holds a job in the Church as a member of the bishop’s staff or a parish employee, such as the principal of a parish school. In these cases, the deacon is usually paid whatever a lay person would be paid for serving in the same position. Notice that such compensation is associated with the position accepted by the deacon in addition to his ecclesiastical assignment as deacon, for which no compensation is generally provided.
The bishop of a diocese may provide a modest allowance to help defray the costs of continuing formation and an annual retreat.
