Well Spring has finally sprung it seems, and we continue the celebration of the Easter Sacraments of Initiation with 1st Communions this weekend. Once again congratulations to all those who were confirmed last weekend and those making their First Holy Communion, and to those adults who were Baptized, Confirmed, and came into full communion with us of the Eucharist on the Easter Vigil. By all these means we come into a personal relation-ship with Our Lord Jesus Christ. It all hinges on our “Christian faith being a holistic experience of a personal encounter with Christ—and this always includes our senses.” Without this personal relationship with Christ all our rituals and celebrations will remain just that. Our faith

and spirituality would be reduced to mere “ritualism”, mindless ritual acts of going through the motions by rote without conscious meaning. No, we are called into a personal relationship with Christ. Jesus tells us in the gospel today, He is the good shepherd who knows and calls each by name. We are led because we are known in a personal way and recognize Christ’s voice.

Our faith is not in a thing or an idea, but rather in a person. Because we know and have a personal relation-ship with Jesus our faith and spirituality can be vital, alive, and strong. Indeed even passionate. We need to be passionate about Christ. Our spirituality needs to be passionate. We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit to experience the power of God’s transforming love. We live in Christ and Christ lives in us. We live in and thru Christ who is “the Gate”, the Way, the Truth, and The Life. We are in the Spirit. That’s what the sacraments signify and bring about for us in our lives. We pray and ask Jesus today to awaken in us a con-scious awareness of the Divine Presence and indwelling of the Holy Spirit, of a personal experience and relation-ship with Christ that will empower and guide us through-out our lives. “I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.... I have come so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” God Bless you all with continuing Easter joy!

Welcome Guests and Visitors!

We’re so glad you’re here and invite you to walk the path of faith with us. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liberating love of God flows through us to all people. We believe the church is the sacrament of God’s saving presence in the world.

Would you like to become a Parishioner? Join us in the gym for Welcome Sunday after the following Masses: NEXT Sunday, May 22 9:00 and 10:45am

Roman Missal Changes From USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) Where can I turn for help in understanding these changes? The first stop for catechesis and formations regarding these changes is your parish and diocese. All the faithful are encouraged to take advantage of parish efforts. You can attend catechetical sessions, (which will be offered here at St. Thomas this summer), read articles in the parish bulletin (you’re doing that now!), listen closely to homilies that help explain the changes, and come early to Mass to practice new musical settings for the prayers (this will begin in September).

In addition, many diocese, schools, universities, and retreat centers will offer programs to help people understand and appreciate the new translation. You can take advantage of these programs where possible. The official web site for the third edition of the Roman Missal is found at www.usccb.org/romanmissal. A variety of resources will be posted that may help you. Catholic publishers and national organizations will publish many resources, in print and online, to help you negotiate this time of change. Check out your local Catholic bookstore to see what is available. Next week: What if I don’t like the new translation?

Mother’s Day Talks If you missed the talks given by some of the women of our parish last weekend, you can still read them. Go to the St. Thomas website, click on “News” and find “Mother’s Day Talks” listed under “Worship Commission News”. We Want to See YOU at the Ministry Fair! Are you a current Liturgical/Music minister, or someone who is interested in becoming one? The Ministry Fair will be May 21 and 22. Please make sure to grab a copy of the ministries booklet, fill it out, and continue or begin to be part of our team!

God, give us eyes to see the beauty of the Spring, And to behold Your majesty in every living thing -

And may we see in lacy leaves and every budding flower The Hand that rules the universe with gentleness and power -

And may this Easter grandeur that Spring lavishly imparts Awaken faded flowers of faith lying dormant in our hearts,

And give us ears to hear, dear God, the Springtime song of birds With messages more meaningful than man's often empty words

Telling harried human beings who are lost in dark despair - 'Be like us and do not worry for God has you in His care.

Faith and Spiritual Formation Commission

As we continue to look at Scriptural events that pre-figure the Eucharist, we find more episodes of holy and life giving bread in the Old Testament. We are probably all familiar with the account of God providing manna in the wilderness. In Exo-dus 16:4+, as the Israelites are wandering in the desert, working their way toward the Promised Land, they were grumbling to Moses because they were starving to death. So the Lord said “I will rain down bread from heaven for you.” The peo-ple were instructed to go out daily to gather and partake of the bread that God provided. As the Israelites continued their journey through the desert, God established a pattern of daily worship for them to follow. Every morning a sacrificial offering was made to the Lord. Most of these offerings were animal sacrifices which was a very common practice in the ancient Near East. But the Israelites also included grain offerings as gifts to the Lord. These bread offerings were made of fine flour, always included salt, remained unleavened and were usually shaped into cakes or wafers. Chapter 2 of Leviticus describes accept-able cereal offerings to the Lord. Leviticus 10:12-13 refers to these unleavened cakes as sacred and therefore, they should only be eaten in a sacred place.

Top 10 Reasons for attending a St. Thomas Men's Retreat* 10 It was a great renewal weekend where I felt I could just be myself. 9 It opened my heart to forgiveness and healing that I had not done before. 8 Was a life-correcting experience...helped me put some of the pieces together of about who I am and why I'm here and how I relate. 7 Powerful refocus of who I am as a man, wounded yet called to holiness. 6 Is the religious highlight of the year. 5 Provides the opportunity for questions, reflection, meditation and prayer which leads to a deeper and richer understanding of myself and of God. 4 Was a time for me to face and discuss the inner man... well worth it - glad I came. 3 Is something every man should gift himself with. 2 Opened another door in my life for myself. I hope it never closes. 1 I left understanding that my life is a work in progress and I left some of me behind to be reclaimed when I return next year.

*Comments from some of those who attended the Men's Retreat in January.

Question of the Week...

How does Jesus, the Good Shepherd, guide me?

Religious Education Special Instructions for Receiving Communion at the First Eucharist Liturgies First Eucharist Liturgies will be on Saturday, May 14 at 1:00 p.m. and at the 4:30 p.m. On May 15, we will also celebrate First Eucharist at the 10:45 mass. During these liturgies the First Com-municant and parent/s will be invited to come for-ward first to the front stations. Other guests in those rows and the rest of the assembly will be asked to wait for Communion until all First Com-municants and parents have received. Eucharistic Ministers will proceed to their assigned stations as usual but will remain facing the altar at their as-signed station (except in front) until all First Com-municants and parents have received. Once First Communicants have received the Eucharist, host-greeters will invite the rest of the assembly to re-ceive. This will include the other guests in the First Communicant’s pew. We thank you for your pa-tience as the children and their parent’s receive Eucharist and thank you for the prayers you have said for these children as they meet Jesus in this most holy sacrament. First Eucharist – May 21 4:30 p.m. If you attend the 4:30 mass on May 21, please take a moment to congratulate Ivanna De Leon on receiving her First Eucharist. Kevin’s Corner This week’s Gospel is from John and contains one of my favorite verses of all time: John 10:10. Whenever someone asks me “What does it mean to be a Christian?” or “What is being Catholic all about?” I always respond promptly with: “Read John 10:10!” Right here Jesus himself tells us why he came, “so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” Wow, how cool is that? I even like the NIV translation better where it says “…and have it to the full” as I think that is a more common phrase that we can recognize. Our God wants us to live life to the fullest, and backed it up with His own sacrifice. We are called as Christians to model that, and even more so as Catholic-Christians to help bring forth the Kingdom of God. So what does it mean to bring forth the Kingdom? May I suggest this: make your life a testament to Christ by living more fully each day AND helping others to have life in abundance. No wonder we Catholics are so pre-occupied with serv-ing our neighbors. How will you help someone and yourself live more fully this week?

Jana Minor: Pax Joliet Award On May 1, Jana Minor received a Pax Joliet Award from the Diocese of Joliet Peace and Social Justice Office. Jana has been a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Naperville for many years. Jana began Companions Journeying Together in 1986. In December of 1986, Companions received a grant to serve the children of women at Cook County Jail. Aunt Mary's Storybook Project was started, giving the women an opportunity to choose and record books for their children. It is Companion's most popular project and has been copied throughout the U. S. Companions publishes Journey Notes and sponsors other programs including: Christmas Card and Mother's Day Stationery Projects, Fathers Read, Mother Love Parenting Classes, individuals and groups wishing to correspond with prisoners, and the Tamms Prayer Project. Joyce Ruhaak introduced Jana with these words:

I am honored to know, work with, and introduce Jana. She lives the criterion for the Pax Joliet Award. All of her adult life Jana has demon-strated an extraordinary commitment to persons incarcerated and their families, and has been a most effective connector of prisoners to persons on the outside who write, pray for, or provide useful articles for them. Also, she has a gift for building relationships with administrators of prisons and jails that benefit prisoners, their family members — especially the children, prison staff members, and persons on the out-side. Together they have worked for the well-being and wholeness of prisoners.

Congratulations, Jana!

Pastoral Care Tornado Safety at Home Two Different terms are used for tornado weather.

WATCH – Conditions make a tornado possible. WARNING – A tornado has been spotted.

Sirens sound only during a warning, so take action! Make your way to the northeast corner of your basement. Make yourself as small as possible by crouching down. Climb under a heavy worktable or other strong furniture. Store blankets and quilts nearby to cover yourself from flying debris. If you don’t have a basement, go to an interior room without windows, like a first floor bathroom. Climb into the tub with a couch cushion to protect you from debris. Tornado Safety at Church If tornado sirens go off during mass, stay calm! Here are some suggestions for your safety. Hallways and bathrooms without windows are the safest places in our building. Make your way there in an orderly fashion. Stay out of the gym. Large open spaces are more likely to collapse. There may be little time to move to safety. If you are unable to get to the hallways, crawl under your pew and make yourself as small a “target” as possible. Help children, the elderly, and those with disabilities get into position.

The Legacy of Help and Hope One of the simplest ways to make a planned gift to your parish is to include St. Thomas the Apostle in your will or trust. This is called a bequest gift and can be easily made. To include St. Thomas as the beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k) or life insurance policy, all you have to do is request a beneficiary designation form from your plan administrator. You complete the form and name St. Thomas as a beneficiary. You can name your parish as the full beneficiary or as partial beneficiary which allows you to in-clude other charities as well.

Parish Picnic It is time to plan for our Parish Picnic held in late summer. Once a team is put together we will have a planning meeting. Contact Patti Dougherty 630.355.8980 ext. 109 or [email protected]. If we each take a small piece, a lot can happen!
