    53rd (Welsh) Division

WWIandInterWarOn 2 July 1915 the Division was ordered to ret or servicein the Mediterranean. Leaving the artillery and train behind,

the rest o the Division let between 14 and 19 July andembarked at Sevonport and sailed via Alexandria, landing atSuvla Bay, Gallipoli on 9 August 1915.

Te eects o month o savage ghting that typied thiscampaign, ew reinorcements and the dreadul blizzard oNovember reduced the Division to just 162 ocers and2428 men (about 15% o ull strength). Between 11 and12 December the Division was evacuated and went on to

Alexandria, where it began to arrive 20 December. From1916 onwards the division was involved in the PalestineCampaign.

    On 26 March 1917, the 53rd

Division bore the brunt othe First Battle o Gaza where the three brigades, along

with the 161st Brigade o the 54th Division, had to advanceacross exposed ground, withstanding shrapnel, machinegun and rife re, to capture the urkish ortications.Despite gaining the advantage towards the end o the day,the British commander called o the attack so that thedivisions casualties, close to 3,500, were suered in vain.1917 concluded with the capture and subsequent deenceo Jerusalem.

Remaining active throughout the interwar years, the divisionserved as part o the Home Deence Forces o the United

Kingdom between 19391940, ttingly based to deendWales and the borders.

preparatIonand traInIngTe Divisional badge, a red W on horizontal a bar wasconceived by Major General B Wilson who commandedthe regiment upon re-mobilisation in 1939.

It was observed by Lieutenant Colonel Cole in Heraldryin War that the emblems meanings were three-old; Notonly did the W standing or Wales, it is a symbol o a

Bardic Crown as well as the process o attack. Te horizontalrepresenting the rm base o the attack, the central, solidpoint representing the spearhead and the side members theoutfanking movements.

Early in the war the Division was posted on several deensiveassignments. In April 1940 the Division transerred toNorthern Ireland, where it remained until November 1941.It returned to the mainland again to deend Kent and theSouth Coast between 19411943, when it was earmarked toorm part o the British Second Army.

In October 1943 the division was reorganised, its 159thInantry Brigade detaching to orm part o 11th ArmouredDivision, with the 71st Inantry Brigade taking its place.

Te 71st Brigade oten jokingly reerred to as the divisionsInternational Brigade being ormed rom Te EastLancashire, Oxord and Buckinghamshire Light Inantryand the Highland Light Inantry Regiments.

During the Divisions crossing o the channel BrigadierWhistler o 160th Brigade was fown o to Normandy totake command o the 3rd Division (Montys Ironsides) on23 June.

    normandy

53rd Welsh Division landed in Normandy on 28 June as oneo Montys Green Divisions and was placed under commando XII Corps now deending the Odon Valley position and

was held in reserve or Operation Epsom, the drive to Hill112.

Te division then went onto the line in the Hill 112/Odon

area and saw heavy ghting as part o Operation Greenline,a diversionary attack West o Caen leading up to OperationGoodwood.

In August the Division began to push out o the Odonregion driving along the river Orne adjacent to the Canadiansector as part o the attempt to close the Falaise Pocket. It

was during the ghting near Balour that Lieutenant askerWatkins won his Victoria Cross.

Due to the casualties suered by the division in Normandyand the acute lack o inantry reinorcements, some battalions

were replaced and reorganised. Te international regimentswere mixed throughout the division as a result.

HollandDuring Operation Market-Garden the Division was located

on the West fank continuing its advance with XII Corpstarting on the Lommel Bridgehead and advancing on theilburg/S Hertogenbosch axis.

Ater the week long grind the XII Corp had still hadnt madetheir objective o s-Hertogenbosch. Over the ollowing

weeks the 53rd garrisoned the island South o Arnhem.

Te taking o the Scheldt peninsula (Operation Pheasant)commenced on 22 October. Te British XII Corps wastasked not only with expanding the Nijmegen Salient

westward, but also with destroying the German ortress ats-Hertogenbosch, thereby cutting the German 15. Armeesline o communication with LXXXVIII. Korps, stationedsouth o the Maas on the Scheldt.

For this task, XII Corps was reinorced by the addition o

15th (Scottish) Division, who would be given the objectivecity o ilburg. Te 51st (Highland) Division meanwhile,

would take the towns o Schijndel and Boxtel and would cutthe German lateral lines o communication between Vught

and ilburg. Te 53rd (Welsh) Division would attack romwhat they hoped would be an unexpected direction romthe northeast.

Te division was battle-hardened rom Normandy, but hadnot suered anywhere near the level o casualties suered byother British divisions in the killing elds o the Bocage. Asa consequence, it was experienced, seasoned and condent. It was also to be well-supported by artillery and air power,as well as armour rom 7th Armoured Division and specialistFunny armour rom General Hobarts 79th ArmouredDivision.

Arguably the Funniest o all were the newly convertedCanadian Ram Kangaroos armoured troop carriers basedon obsolete Ram tanks. Tese Ram Kangaroos were to beused in action or the rst time in this operation, which wasdesignated Operation Alan.

Armoured Support was also provided by the Cromwells othe 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards (Te Skins)sent to reinorce the 7th Armoured ollowing their lossesin Normandy. Te Skins were the only Regiment o the7th Armoured Division in attendance or the assault on thecity. Additional support armour support was also providedby the Shermans o the East Riding Yeomanry (ERY) rom

    33rd

Armoured Brigade and the Crocodiles o 141st

s-HertogenboscHTe city, designated a Festung or Fortress by the Germanhigh command, was a vital supply connection to the German

orces let on the Scheldt as well as the only real withdrawalroute rom the peninsula. Even Hitler himsel telephoned inthe order to Hold at all costs.

In line with its importance it was garrisoned by some ourbattalions rom 712. Inanterie-Division. Approximatelynine companies were located in the town with the remainderguarding likely approach routes.

    Te 53rd Divisions start line was some 15km to the NorthEast near Oss. Te structure o the attack was;

160 Brigade to push to the North o the railway supported bythe Skins, some Crocodile Churchills rom the Bus as wellas Flail Sherman Crabs rom the Westminster Dragoons(79th Armoured Division).

71st Brigade to advance South o the railways astride themain Oss-S Hertogenbosch road.

158th Brigade was held in reserve along with the 53rdReconnaissance Regiment and a squadron o the Skins toexploit any gaps in the line and to seize the canal bridges intothe town, should an opportunity arise.

At 0630 on 22 October the advance began well with the160th Brigade gaining some 5 miles (8km) and reachingKruisstratt at 1.30pm. Te 71st Brigade, unsupported byarmour, made much slower progress.

By 1500, the Divisional commander, Lieutentant GeneralBobby Ross decided to capitalize the gains o 160 Brigade.

On the codeword Saucepan he released the reserved158th Brigade, spearheaded by the 53rd Recce Regiment and1st East Lancashires mounted in Ram Kangaroos, to push

through their gained positions. Unortunately 158th

Brigaderan into mine elds shortly ater and the advance boggeddown. 160th Brigade were once again ordered to advance.

During the days ghting the 71st Brigade saw some sharpaction, with the 1st Highland Light inantry (1st HLI) inthe village o Nuland and the 4th Royal Welch Fusiliers (6thRWF) were unortunate to lose all their ocers who were hit

    while assembled to receive orders.

Te advance continued early on 23 October with 160thBrigade pushing on towards Rosmalen. 71st Brigade continuedslowly onwards through the orested terrain which straddledthe road South o the Railway. By aternoon the Division

was well placed to attack the city itsel.

o prepare or the assault on the city proper the artilleryprogramme Chicago, consisting o some 200 guns (approxthree quarters 25 pdrs, the remainder Medium and Heavyguns), red over 50,000 shells into the city throughout thenight o 23/24 October.

During the night o 23/24 October the hamlet o Hinthamwas assaulted jointly by elements o 160th Brigade rom theNorth and 158th Brigade rom the East in order to make upor the comparatively slow going o the 71st Brigade. Teremainder o each brigade made good progress into the city

overnight with a platoon rom 160th Brigade even crossingthe canal beore the bridge was blown behind them.

Te remainder o 24 October saw one squadron o the Skins

    5/22

joining 158th Brigade in the city ollowing a head long dashdown the steeply banked railway, under the sights o Germanguns. Te remainder o the Skins pushed along the Hinthamroad with the 6th RWF into the city.

Later that aternoon the 6th RWF made the assault acrossthe lock gates, supported by the Skins tanks and theBus Crocodiles and held the bridge against determined

counterattacks throughout the night while a class 40 bridgewas constructed by the supporting engineers.

Te battle had until now gone more-or-less according to plan.During 25 October however, the Division suered severalset-backs; Te attempts to cross the canal in the NW o thecity by 160th Brigade were unsuccessul as the Germans hadreinorced the position overnight.

Te 1st East Lancs were to fank the city and drive towards thebridges in the SW o the city while the 1/5th Welch Regiment

were to clear the centre o the city. Both these advances didnot start until late in the aternoon with each only reachingtheir objectives late in the evening, by which time all three

bridges were reported as blown and partially destroyed.

Te plan or 26 October was or 158th Brigade to cross thepartially demolished bridges in the SW o the city. Te 1/5 th

Welch were to rush the bridge in the centre o the town withthe 7th RWF in reserve, ready to exploit either bridgehead.Te inantry were now supported by the Shermans o theERY who had now relieved the Skins.

At 11am the 1/5th Welch rushed the bridge under smokeand mortar preparation, taking 25 prisoners and 2 MGs.Tese early gains were opposed with violent counterattacksthroughout the day. Te East Lancs however took their

bridge in the southwest against only light opposition.

Exploiting the East Lancs success, 7th RWF passed throughthe East Lancs bridgehead and ought their way towards therailway station. Te East Lancs meanwhile, pushed along theriver and linked up with the 1/5th Welch at approximately10pm.

Te 27 October saw mainly mopping up in the West othe city until the Germans counterattacked with inantry

in company strength, supported by some ve StuGs andthree Jagdpanthers. Te inantry were halted by combinedsmall arms and mortar re. Te armour was engaged by allavailable guns and eventually seven o the eight were eitherdestroyed or captured.

Te taking o S Hertogenbosch is still seen as a ne exampleo inantry/armour co-operation in an urban environment.

By special order the divisional commander, Major GeneralBobby Ross stated, I do not think that any ormation couldhave shown greater enterprise and resourceulness...

Even the captured German Garrison Commander, Major

Riehl, stated that he had been surprised by the speed o theDivisions advance and was impressed by the resolute mannerwith which the inantry had crossed the various canal andriver crossings under re.

ardennesIn December 1944, now attached to XXX Corps, it was oneo the British divisions that took part in the Battle o theBulge as part o Montys Long-stop, helping to blunt thenorthern tip o the German salient.

Te 53rd Recce Regiment was attached to the British 6thAirborne Division or the operation while the main body o

the Division saw action at the very tip o the bulge South oLige on the River Ourthe.

Into germanyFollowing the Ardennes, the division was sent north inFebruary 1945, to take part in Operation Veritable. Stillattached to XXX Corps, the division slogged its way throughthe Reichswald Forest and assaulted the ortied city o

Weeze beyond. It was during this bitter period o dicultghting in deep orest, waterlogged elds and shattered

towns, all the while mired in mud, that the division sueredover hal its total casualties or the war. Nevertheless, thedivision broke through the Siegried Line.

Rejoining XII Corps and crossing the Rhine during OperationPlunder, the division saw action as part o the ExploitationReserve and broke out to the North East across the RiverIssel. Te ghting which ollowed, in the last months o the

war, saw several bitter battles against enemy ormations thatincluded determined Marine Divisions and even a Hungarianregiment, beore ending the War in Hamburg.
