By Cheryl Poch Summer Reading Programs are over and now it is time to just relax with a good book or two! We have been adding many new DVD’s, CD’s and books for your reading entertainment. The staff is working on ‘lists’ to help you in your reading, listening and viewing materials. We will give you an author and if you like that author we will list a few other authors that are similar in that particular genre. Same goes with our CD’s and DVD’s. So look for ‘lists’ in the near future – what librarian doesn’t like to make lists and then pass them on to their happy library patrons! Beth, our Programming Coordinator, is gearing up- programs for the fall – as we speak! There will be NEW programs and services the library will be offering our library patrons. Look for classes on tablets and the like. If you need help with your tablet – give us a call and we can set up INDIVIDUAL – Private Sessions to get you on your way to understanding these new technical devices. We are unable to provide ‘drop-in’ help due to staff scheduling, etc. But we can help you if you just give us a call and see if there is a good time for you and the staff to help you out! Our Fall Newsletter will be coming out soon too. In it will be a schedule of our programs for all ages and interests. Our programs will also be listed on our website www.fowlervillelibrary.org. You can check out our website night or day to keep you informed of what is going on here at the library and what will be going on at the library! There are so many NEW books out there just waiting to be checked out. I forgot how much fun it is just to stroll through the stacks of books here at the library. I like my tablet but it will never replace my need to hold on to a ‘real’ book and ip the pages and smell the smell of a new book! There you have it – timely library information for all! Stop by and check out what is new and what is not so new. There is something for everyone here at the Fowlerville District Library. Till next week: “There is more to life than increasing its speed.”

Fowlerville High School soccer boys help out during “Day of Caring” The Fowlerville High School Boys Soccer Program also participated in the Livingston County United Way’s “Day of Caring” last Wednesday. Coaches Doug Jarvis, Graham Lockwood, and Ethan Chora started the day by taking the ALS ice bucket challenge and challenging the teams to complete it in the next 24 hours. The boys then began working with Dave Brown, Maintenance Director at Fowlerville Community Schools. The boys painted the baseball dugouts, baseball ticket booth, the football stadium posts, the pump house, the soccer dugouts, and both soccer tickets booths. They also had a crew washing walls at the high school and installing soccer nets at the practice elds. Coach Jarvis started planning on the soccer program participating in this event last March. He told the teams that that “this day is all about doing what is right.”
Trevor Hunt was one of the soccer players who painted last Wednesday.
Here are the members of the Fowlerville Soccer Teams who helped out during the “Day of Caring.”
Michigan Senate ReportBy Joe Hune,22nd District
Tour your state capitol! A visit to the Michigan Capitol is a unique experience for any resident but especially for children. I encourage all of my constituents to consider making the trek to Lansing to see their Capitol and stop by and meet their elected representatives. Since 1879, the Capitol building has served as the seat of Michigan government. More than a century later, a second celebration in 1992 marked the successful conclusion of a three-year project to restore the Capitol to its original glory. It is now a National Historic Landmark, an award reserved for America’s most important historic places, and today more than 125,000 visitors take guided tours of the Capitol every year. If you would like to learn more about the Capitol and see it rsthand, the Capitol Tour Guide and Information Service offers guided tours ve days a week and serves as a ready reference for questions about the restored Capitol and state government. Tours are offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and last 45 minutes to an hour. However, they are subject to change daily based on staf ng levels, so visitors interested in a guided tour should call ahead to verify tour times. Residents can schedule tours up to a year in advance. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more. For reservations call (517) 373-2348 or write to Capitol Tour and Information Service; Capitol Square; P.O. Box 30014; Lansing, MI 48909-7514 Residents wishing to set up a tour may also contact my of ce at 1-855-JOE-HUNE, or email us at [email protected] and my staff will be happy to assist you.

She was born in Fowlerville, Michigan on October 26, 1928 to Rex M. and Beulah (Rickett) Allen. She attended Huntington, College in Huntington, Indiana where she met and married Huntington Seminary student S. Roger Birdsall. Both of them graduated in 1950. Rev. Birdsall and Mrs. Birdsall then moved to Boise, Idaho in 1950 where he began his pastoral ministry, and she began her elementary teaching career. Their rst two children, Connie and oug, were born there. In 1954 the Birdsalls moved to Sylmar, California and welcomed two more sons, Brent and Brian. The Midwest beckoned them back in 1960, and the family moved to Peoria, Illinois where they lived for the next 22 years. Rev. Birdsall pastured the First United Brethren Church, and Mary Lou taught hundreds of students at Rolling Acres Elementary School until her retirement in 1983. The Birdsalls, affectionately known as “Pastor and Mary Lou” were both lifelong members of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Since moving to Swiss Village Retirement Community in Berne, Mary Lou was a member of the First Missionary Church. Mrs. Birdall was an “idea” pastor’s wife and a true partner in ministry with her husband in six pastorates. She was known and loved at church and school for her musical talents at the piano and organ. She continued to play the piano almost to the end of her life for Rotary Clubs in Huntington and Berne, for handicapped persons, and at Swiss Village for the enjoyment of residents and staff. In addition, many people appreciated her easy laughter, pleasant disposition and imaginative story-telling. Being a mother and grandmother as well as mentoring other young women “who just needed a mother” brought her great joy. Rev. and Mrs. Birdsall frequently traveled internationally upon retirement, including extended mission trips to visit their sons in Sierra Leone, West Africa; Tokyo, Japan; and Kiev, Ukraine. They also traveled together to teach at Bible colleges in Jamaica and Bangalore, India. Mrs. Birdsall was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers, Paul Allen and Gerald Allen. Surviving are four children: Connie (Neil) Potter of Berne, IN; ouglas (Jeanie) Birdsall of South Hamilton, MA; Brent (Sadie) Birdsall of Burnsville, MN; and Brian (Cathy) Birdsall of New York City. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren: Eric Potter, Stacia Birdsall Lee, Stephanie Birdsall Fennell, Mark Potter, Judd Birdsall, Amy Birdsall Boal, Janet Potter, Alec Birdsall, Ike Birdsall, Brooks Birdsall, Masha Birsall, Tory Birsall, Beau Birdsall, and Jack Birdsall, and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, at Swiss Village Chapel with her sons of ciating. Memorials can be given to Huntington University. To sign the on-line guestbook visit yagerkirchhofer.com. Burial was at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Huntington . Arrangements were handled by Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home

Mistaken Identity? Perhaps it’s the luxury of retirement that sometimes lets the days slip past without me being totally aware of the date. But I did think it was August. A rather nasty little head cold over recent days has seemed unseasonable; usually I reserve those kinds of discomforts for colder months, so that may have been part of the problem. Still I distinctly remember going out in the garden today, or was it yesterday, and picking some bell peppers, some green beans and several nice tomatoes. Aren’t those August kinds of activities? I am absolutely certain that Shirley and I were walking near our northern cabin only a week ago and we saw some young grouse, nearly as big as their parents. And we remarked that most of the year’s crop of rabbits are now over half grown. Those things happen now so that next month, September,
nds game grown when the seasons open. It was also last week when right near Lansing we were driving past a hay
eld. Six deer were looking at us as we slowed and the four fawns were almost as large as their mothers. Then, down at the other end of the eld a big buck stood up, his velvet covered antlers already spread wide and extending a foot above his head. All signs of August. But then things got confusing. The mailman stopped at the box out front and I ambled out to see that he’d left a magazine, “Alaska”, two bills, a check from a publisher and four catalogs. Most were Christmas catalogs, one of gifts and two of cards and a nal, offering spring ower bulbs for my garden. I don’t remember being delirious from my little cold but something surely didn’t seem right. Magazines, of course, always arrive a month early and so one about Alaska and September would feature snow and hunting. Bills come all year and checks too, so the real shocker was with the catalogs. That evening I found myself looking seriously at a variety of Christmas greetings I began to get the feeling that it was important that I choose and order the special “seasonal greetings” that I’ll want to send. I even began to dog ear the pages where appealing scenes of
snowy households, colorful birds and animals looked back at me. Perhaps I was dreaming but I think I saw and became emotionally involved with two ridiculous cards. One with a herd of comic cows carried the greeting “Mooery Christmas” and a second featured a pile of sheep in the form of a Christmas tree
and the caption “Fleece Navidad”! Could that be? Then I looked outside and I saw re ies in the backyard and soon after that my son called to get details on where and when we were to take my granddaughter shing. It had to still be August. Jennifer would be in school if it weren’t. Still somewhat shaken I hung up the phone and headed for the shing tackle. I’d best get focused. The last catalog, the one offering tulips, crocuses and daffodils smiled up at me prettily from the table as I passed. It can stay there for a while. I’m sure now, it’s still August. But the summer is winding down and every day’s trip to the mailbox seems bound to remind of the fact.
New licensed center in Brighton offers treatment to Opiod addiction Across the United States people are trying to prepare a “toolkit” for people addicted to heroin and other highly addictive Opioids. “We all have toolkits in our home for everything from a hammer or screwdriver for minor repairs to smoke alarms and re extinguishers to aspirin and band aids for headaches and cuts and scrapes,” noted Karen Scott of The Brighton Learning Center & the Michigan Access Center in Lansing. “One of the tools suggested for Opioid addiction is Narcan. In recent months there has been a nationwide push to allow loved ones to use Narcan to revive those persons who accidentally overdosed. While Narcan is, no doubt, a good product, what happens after the person is revived? “Narcan is not treatment.” Scott stated. “Narcan is considered a harm-reduction product that does not treat addiction. Therefore; treatment for addiction to Opioids is essential for persons abusing and overdosing on heroin and other opiates.” Livingston County needed an Out-patient Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Center for residents struggling with addiction to painkillers like Vicodin and Oxycontin as well as those who use heroin, she said, adding that drug use is a growing epidemic across the nation, including Livingston County. The Brighton Center, Inc. recently lled the void for those af icted with Opioid dependence, by opening the
rst Medication Assisted Treatment Facility in Livingston County. The facility is conveniently located at 2512 Harte Drive Brighton, on the south side of Grand River near St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. The medical staff offers Medication Assisted Treatment following the guidelines of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment; State of Michigan Of ce of Recovery Oriented Systems of Care; DEA and The Joint Commission. Please note that prior to The Brighton Center becoming licensed, Livingston residents traveled to Livonia or Lansing for MAT services on a daily basis.

Webberville Report
Senior Spotlight-- Dillon HarryBy Jake Haite
This week’s senior spot light is Dillon Harry. Harry moved from Nebraska to Michigan in 2013. Harry said “My favorite classes in High School were math and strength. Harry is the son of Tracy Harry. Harry said, “Sports were the best part of my high school career because it kept my grades up because I knew if I didn’t I couldn’t play with the team.” Harry played baseball at Webberville and he was a great team leader. “Dillon was new to the school but still t in right away, especially on the baseball team. He worked hard and was a great addition to the team” said Caleb Simpson fellow teammate. Harry always wanted to play, he loved the sport and he t right in on the eld. In Nebraska, Harry played varsity soccer, football and baseball for two years. Harry said “I learned a lot playing at a varsity level. Although I didn’t play every game, when I was there I learned a lot.” Since Harry has been coming to Webberville, he has been playing baseball. Harry said it’s his favorite sport and loves the game “Dillon Harry is very athletic and likes to be involved in many sports and was a good team leader,” said fellow senior Kyle Oesterle. Harry was also involved in journalism and he is a good salesman. Harry was asked what his biggest success was and he replied that this was maintaining his school work and getting a job. He said that he is going to miss his friends. His advice for underclassmen is “Turn in all your work and don’t half do it.”. “If you don’t do your work you will ght through high school and it will be hard to get back on track and where you want to be,” he said, adding that “Always do your homework and study-- there is no time to mess up.” Harry has plans to go to college not sure where yet but wants to get into business management. “I want to get into this eld because math is my best strength,” he said.

Webberville High students to receive iPad to use at school & home
By Brian Friddle, Superintendent of Webberville Community Schools
Thanks to a Whole School Technology Transformation Grant, each student attending Webberville High School this fall will receive an iPad for their educational use in school and at home. This will be a tremendous opportunity for students and staff to be a part of engaging instruction. We anticipate that teachers will deliver much of their instruction with the use of the new iPads. There will be a learning curve for both staff and students, but we know both will be motivated by a highly engaging tool like the iPads. Teachers are converting their curriculum into a digital format so that students can work on their schoolwork online. We anticipate that students and staff will bene t from blended instruction, and eventually will have opportunities for ipped classrooms. Students will be able to view their course materials and lectures on their tablets and then have time to engage with staff and other students digitally to deepen their understanding of course material. Students will be able to use the iPads in their classrooms at school and then will be able to take them home to complete homework or for personal use. We will be using various “apps” and will migrate to the use of electronic texts to enhance student instruction. Students will learn to save their
les to the cloud so that they can have access to them no matter where they are as long as they have internet access. They will also have opportunities to collaborate with other students with documents in this format, which has been proven to increase student learning. This will provide a tremendous opportunity for everyone involved in using the one-to-one devices. Students and teachers will have the ability to receive immediate feedback on assessments to inform instruction, and students will be able to submit their assignments electronically to their teachers. Use of the iPads will help students as they transition to other opportunities, and in preparation for college. We anticipate students will learn from the teachers, but we also know that teachers will be learning a great deal from the students as they take this journey together, implementing hands-on technology in the classroom. New students who would like to attend Webberville High School in the fall will each receive their own iPad. Set up an appointment with the high school administration by calling 517-521-3447.
You started at just 18 but your determination has lasted for 40 years! We’re proud of you and your
professional accomplishments.
“We hope you can hit your goal of 75 years!”

Outdoor Enthusiasts: Create a plan for wildlife to thrive on your land (StatePoint) Whether your home rests on a small lot or a large woodland, there are steps you can take to create a thriving ecosystem for local wildlife. And if you live on woodlands, you may even consider turning your property into an ideal game habitat. Deer, for example, could use more healthy land, say experts. There are roughly 15 million white tailed deer in this country, according to Cornell University Statistics -- and this explosive population is always looking for a good habitat. With a little foresight and planning, it’s possible to attract and maintain a healthy deer herd -- complete with mature, trophy-class bucks -- on relatively small woodland tracts. “The key to success is providing for a herd’s four basic needs -- food, water, cover and space -- throughout the year, by actively managing your woodland with deer in mind,” says Mike Burns, a forester who uses My Hunting Land Plan, a website from the American Forest Foundation that has free land management resources, such as a mapping tool that can be used to mark out features on your land. But landowners need to be proactive. Without a hands-on approach, woodlands tend to evolve into low-quality wildlife habitats. With that in mind, the experts at My Hunting Land Plan are offering some tips for creating a thriving home for deer and other creatures. -- Discing: Also known as strip disking, discing is disturbing the soil through shallow tillage to stimulate the growth of native grasses and the resprouting of many woody species. It also helps control brush. --Creating openings: Depending on the surrounding landscape and size of your woods, about 10 percent of your forest acreage should consist of openings. Create them by
clear-cutting one- to ve-acre patches throughout larger forests. --Monitor your wildlife: Trail cams can be a great way to see what you have in your woods and track them throughout the year. Place your trail cams on larger tree trunks in areas where you have seen signs of animals. Be sure to mount it at the height of the animal you want to track. --Managing trees: Removing undesirable trees and cultivating mast-producing ones can help nourish and attract wildlife. Ideally, 20 to 30 percent of your woodland should consist of these fruit- and nut-bearing trees. --Share: If your land is really thriving, show it off by uploading trail cam photos or pictures from your woods, or answer the questions of others within the community “ask a forester” section on the My Hunting Land Plan website at www.MyHuntingLandPlan.org. --Plan: Advance planning is crucial. Use free resources, such as My Hunting Land Plan’s journal to log your projects. The site’s mapping feature is easy and intuitive to use and can be used to mark out the locations of trail cams, as well as your deer hunting stand. Anyone with land can create a healthy ecosystem by being proactive -- whether the intention is to attract trophy-class bucks to your woodlands or hummingbirds to a small garden.

The “Innovation Generation Fashion Show Competition,” sponsored by Baby Lock, Coats & Clark and Kiki magazine, will be held on Saturday for 8 to 18 year olds who know the sewing process and have made their own garments. Entries are prejudged and then worn by the contestants on the Expo Fashion Stage. Attendees can participate in the Costume Fashion Show on Sunday.
