Grace, Mercy & Peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

This new Church year finds us busier than ever and for the

most part- thats a good thing But with the crowded

calendars and craziness in all our schedules, your Session and I

want to be sensitive to your commitments and that includes

    your activities at Church.

And since we value your time as much as you do, your Session

will be using the E.P.I.C. model as our guide to evaluate each of our activities at FPC,

    asking the following questions:

    A perfect example

of this is the Churchbreakfasts that we

    will be doing

    through the

    Fellowship

    Committee. Mike

    Manuel is having u

    come to the Church

    to cook the

breakfast and just get to know each other better but then we will go to the P.E.T. project

work site to help make those personal energy transport carts

As I look at the activities that we do at First Pres-Mission, the ones that we will always

make the time for are those where Experience, Participation, Image and Connecting-

Community are the focus But come on and join in and find out for yourself

    Blessings to all,

    Pastor Dave +Clerk's Corner:

Sunday, August 15th was anextra special dayin the life of our

church. We celebratedthe baptism ofLily Alice Jirovec, and we welcomed her parentsNicole and Shane Jirovec, along with Cathy and JamesPendergrass into our churchfamily. We are so happy all of

you are here at FPC :)

Is the activity EXPERIENCE DRIVEN?...Does it give meaning to and enrich our lives?

Is the activity PARTICIPATORY / HANDS-ON?...Real action and not just talk, beyond just writing a check.

Is the activity IMAGE DRIVEN?...Especially for classes/worship since most are visual learners.

Is the activity CONNECTING-COMMUNITY? ...Does it bring us into relationship with each other?

Church Work Day: Thanks so much! Many thanks to all those who pitched in around the church for our Church Work Day!

We started the daywith a morning pep

    talk from Sueafter

    eating about 62 lbs. of

    donuts and muffins

    and it was pointed out

    that The Church that

    cleans together, stays together.

And after Saturday, we really believe it!

Ted Allen took over cleaning the bathroom walls and had

so much fun that he came back on Monday to do the lasttwo bathrooms! Amanda Leerhoff, Whitney Little and

Dot Harrigan cleaned all the toys in the nursery and just

out of the picture Little Bit Dawn was testing them all

out for us! The kitchen crew also worked hard cleaning,

taking inventory and even taking the oven doors off to

clean them! Many thanks to Kathy Manuel, Rose Sill,

Kathy Dickey and JoAnn Allen for a job well done.

    Meanwhile, Mike Hudsonpillar did some

    serious weeding while Bob Sherwood,

    Lowell Hudsonpillar and Mike Manuel

trimmed and fertilized the lawn (which is

just what we need to make the grass grow

faster!).In addition, Pat Hudsonpillar and Judy

Mayes re-organized the Sacristy, while Bill

    Dickeypolished the Parlor and pews

It seems every year there is more to do to

keep the Church clean, but what a relief it is

to have such a helpful church family!!

We cant say thank you enough!!!

PsWe even caught Pastor Dave supervising...well...helpingor, well.sermonizing!

Music Profile: EDDIE DE LA GARZAHave you had an opportunity to talk with Eddie, our

resident pianist/composer/arranger? If not, you really

    should do exactly thattalk!

Eddie joined our music staff in the summer of 2001. He

came to us because one of our organists, Alta Uhrmacher,

wanted to be gone during the summer and the other, BettyWatkins, wanted to slow down a little after having played

the organ for over 50 years in this church. Chuck Zimmerman, who was associated with

Valley Keyboards at the time, told me that he knew just the young man that we

needed! (I recently found out that Chuck had known of Eddie and his talents since Eddie

    was in the second grade.)

A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Eddie has a

degree in music composition. He teaches music at Escandon

Elementary in La Joya, but his first musical love is still composition

particularly, film scoring! His most recent musical film score was

for the movie The City of Hidalgo which was rated in the top 10films for the TEXAS MONTHLY Where Im From Short Film

Contest. (You can watch the film at www.texasmonthly.com/filmcontest/7)

Eddie and his wife, Zoila, have two sons: Niko, a freshman and Ivan, a 6th graderboth at

the IDEA Academy in Mission. When you are out for dinner around the Valley, look for

Eddie and his band, LAST PAGEI guarantee you will enjoy his music and his

    conversation, too!

you come in and see if there is

    something that YOU would

    DID YOU KNOW??By Pat Hudsonpillar

Do you ever wonder why some things are

    the way they are?

For instance, why does anyone have to

lead the hymns and responses in the FirstPresbyterian Church of Mission? Do we really need a

    song leader?

Well, to answer that question, you first have to know

what the problem is: while the acoustics are quite good

in the current sanctuary, there is a sound gap between

the congregation and the choir/organ . . . neither can

hear the other! The organist couldnt hear the

congregation during the hymns and playing softly did

not solve the problemit only made it worse! The

choir could hear the organ, but not the congregation . . .so often, it was a tug-of-war which ended with everyone

feeling insecure about singing at all.

I soon discovered, however, that by standing at the

edge of the chancel, I could hear congregation, organ &

choirand keep them all together! A simple solution

one used in many churches. Do you suppose they had a

    similar problem? PH

Sharing Our StoryBETTY & ROSCOE WATKINSPastors Note: Friends, First Presbyterian Church- Mission has such a wonderful storyand character to it that I thought Id like to S.O.S. Save our Stories for future

generations. And what better characters to start with than Betty & Roscoe Watkins

Betty and Roscoe Watkins transferred their membershipfrom First Presbyterian in Weslaco to First Presbyterian in

Mission in 1947, where Roscoe went to work for WeaksMartin in the Parts Dept. and Betty started at the Church-

where she was our organist for 54 years Now they will

tell you that they both just sing in the choir, where they

think that Pat Hudsonpillar is just, The greatest!

Since this is only a snapshot of Betty and Roscoeand nota full length movieRoscoe says that one of his best

memories of First Presbyterian Church was when he was a young Elder:

Pastor I.W. Wilcox had just left and the Church was in conversation with PastorWalter Guin to be the new pastor.

Pastor Guin had said that there were three things that would need to happen if First

Pres. were to call him to be their pastor: There would need to be a Building

Program, a Unified Budget, and theyd need to remove dead wood off the

    Session.

Much to his surprise, the Churchcalled Pastor Guin! Roscoe also

    pointed out that Pastor Deutsch

    who followed Pastor Guin was

the best teacher hed ever had

Betty and Roscoe said that theyhave so much to be thankful for

and their years at First Preshave been so much a part of

their life because the people are

    so warm and caring.

    Betty and RoscoeThanks so

    much for Sharing yourStory

Gently Used Blankets Wanted forChristmas BasketsAs we look and prepare the Church

calendar, December is just around the

corner. It is time to think of the food

    baskets we give out at

Christmas. This year in addition to

the food, we would like to give blankets again. We

have given a few blankets in the past, but we want to

    do more this year...

We all have blankets we are not using, are too big or

too small for our beds now, are tired of the color or

dont have the room. Go through your linen closets

and lets donate them to be distributed at Christmas

time. One thing I would like to ask, is that they are

clean and not damaged. Again, thank you for your

generosity! For more information, contact Judy

    MayesOutreach Chairman at 585-1198 .

An AwesomeAwesomeAwesome FPC Kid You Should Know...

Brady Andrew Butcher cant think of anything he would

change about First Presbyterian Church of Mission.

Brady participates in the Bells of Hope Choir and SonShinePlayers. His fatherMarcus Butcher and GrandmotherBetty

Butcher are bell ringers, too. When you ask him why he

participates in SonShine Players he answers, I get to act and

sing in SonShine Players and acting and singing is fun. FPC

Music Director Patricia Hudsonpillar says, Brady is an

intelligent, curious, young man who always keeps me

hopping. He is a deep thinker and seems to enjoy finding out

what you think or better yet, your reaction to what he thinks. His brother Zach is one

    of our nursery attendants.

This comic eleven-year-old is a student at John H. Shary Elementary, where heparticipates in Music Memory U.I.L. and plays the trombone. He also studies piano.

His favorite saying is Live With It. Brady likes the story about Jesus walking on

water and his favorite Bible verse is the story of the Angel of the Lord visiting Mary

from Luke 1:26-38. Brady takes after his motherDianne Butcher with his love of

history. Dianne is the Social Studies Department Chairperson at Sharyland High

    School. If Brady could travel

    anywhere, he would visit Russia

as the Cold War is a very

    interesting topic for him.

    Brady Butcher is definitely an

FPC kid you should know. If you

havent met him, say hello the

next time you see the SonShine

Players or Bells of Hope perform!
