“Thanks, Daddy, this is sooo good.” Those words (or hand signals) from my

boys warm my soul. Honest, heart-felt thanks does that.

But of course, there are other times when little ones don’t want to say

“Thanks.” Sometimes the reminder, “Say ‘thank you!’” is met with a stony

frown and a stubborn silence.

Ingratitude doesn’t only afflict chil-

dren. Sometimes my soul feels a bit “foggy.” I

know with my brain that I ought to be thankful

for my family, my friends, my calling, my

home – and my salvation! But I don’t feel

thankful. Ever have a day like that?

The “Flatirons” are a majestic row of

granite mountains towering over Boulder,

Colorado. When I lived near Boulder as a boy,

I often walked to church. The route took me on

a dirt road past an old farm house and over the

top of the highest hill in town. Standing under

the cottonwoods on the hilltop I had a great

view of the Flatirons. I remember pausing there many times on my way to church, think-

ing, “Wow.”

But some days the mountains were blanketed with fog. There was no awesome

view from the hilltop; just a gray cloud wall. No “Wow.”

A similar thing happens to us when we’re not feeling thankful to God. His good

gifts are right in front of us! But blocking our view of them is the fog of fearfulness,

pride, or disbelief.

So what should we do? Wait until we feel thankful again? I suggest we go

through the motions of thankfulness. Say, “Wow, God! Thanks!” even if you don’t feel

it. Why? Because the fog will not last. If we turn our hearts regularly and expectantly to

Jesus, the fog will not last. It’s just a matter of time before it breaks up and we once

again see the beauty and wonder of our God.

We are used to practicing thankfulness on the fourth Thursday of November.

But why not practice thankfulness at every meal and every bedtime? Every Sunday wor-

ship service and each new morning? In sunshine or fog, let us praise the Lord. “Give

thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.”

Grace & peace,

Pastor Andrew
