Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time November 4, 2018

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

Jesus told the scribe, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” [Mark 12: 33]

Three times a day, an observant Jew prays the Shema… that one must love God with all ones being. Jesus says that this is not enough, and adds (Lev 19:18) loving ones neighbor as ones self. Jesus is insisting that love of God and love of neighbor are two sides of the same coin.

The scribe does not miss the radical charac-ter of this double commandment. What we find here is not just a moral mandate: if one loves God, then one ought to love one’s neighbor. No. Jesus is saying something more basic: one CANNOT love God and not love one’s neigh-bor, for the love of God is realized precisely in one’s love of neighbor. The double command-ment shine a harsh light on false piety divorced from care for others, for love is one.

All Saints and All Souls Days this past week set the tone for November as a time to remem-ber those who have gone before us and also for us to face honestly the inevitability of our own deaths. The liturgy invites us to look be-yond our fears of death to the eternal beauty of our incarnation into Christ, our eternal life in God that has already begun.

Questions for the week: How have those who have died taught me how to live in the love of Christ? When does Christ love through me despite my human weaknesses?

Your Pastor, Fr. Bob

What’s a Liturgy Committee? So many people make things work for the most important mo-ment of our week as a parish: our Sunday worship: altar servers, Ushers, Choir members, musicians, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, sacristans and those who care for flowers and ferns. The celebrating priest cannot lead us unless this TEAM of liturgical ministers have done their jobs enabling us ALL to be active par-ticipants at Mass. A Liturgy Committee is composed of the leaders of these many ministries, working to-gether to praise and worship God more effectively.

Word from Pope Francis

“If today we are remembering those brothers and sis-ters of ours who lived before us and are now in heaven, they are there because they were washed in the blood of Christ. That is our hope, and this hope does not disappoint. If we live our lives with the Lord, he will never disappoint us.”

The Cloud of Witnesses: Every year at the end of October we place on the bulletin board our All Souls Day List for 2017-2018, and invite our parish members to share their losses with us.

As a Community of Faith we solemnly remember our sisters and brothers who have come to the end of their pilgrimage in this life and have gone before us into Eternal Life. We honor and cherish them, interceding for them during the month of November until the feast of Christ the King. Please add to this list on the bulletin board the names of relatives and friends who have died since

Nov 2, 2017 last year. These names will be read solemnly with the prayers on next weekend, November 3-4.

The Cloud of Witnesses tableau in front of the altar welcomes pic-tures and prints of our deceased loved ones that may be taped to the cardboard poster. This gives us a visual image of those we are praying for.

Mass Intentions for our Deceased Friends and Family Members should be placed on the right corner of the altar or given personally to Fr. Bob or Barbara. The All Souls envelopes are available in the vestibule of the church. Write the names of your deceased loved ones on the envelopes. All moneys placed in them in honor of the deceased go to the poor [Loaves and Fishes].

Daylight Saving Time Ends: Fall back one hour and re-set your watches!
