Dear Friends

Our Chief Secretary Colonel Richard Munn reminded us recently that the commissioning of new officers is a ‘spring-time’ event in the life of a territory. Spring-time brings to mind pictures of new life, growth and freshness and so we thank God for the evidence of these things within our Army, seen last weekend at the Commissioning and Ordination. Let’s pray for our friends as they embark on ministry which we know can be a mixture of great joy and often huge challenges.

The dictionary describes an officer as “one who holds a position of rank or authority in an army. Another definition is “a person appointed or elected to some position of responsibility …” But that’s not the whole story. Whether we’re officers, ministry workers, corps leaders or centre managers the words Peter wrote in his 1st letter (chapter 5: 2 & 3) have some helpful advice on how we are to live our lives as leaders - and its not about rank or appointment or authority! He writes:

MELBOURNE VETERANS BAND - TUGGERANONG CORPS VISIT

A blessed time was had by all who attended the various engagements presented by the Melbourne Veterans’ Band (Noel Jones) in the Nation’s Capital on the week-end of 23 and 24 November 2013. The Bandsmen were the guests of the Tuggeranong Corps. These were the final official engagements of Bandmaster Noel Jones who was retiring after thirteen years of faithful and committed service as Bandmaster. An enthusiastic crowd listened intently to the Band’s program on Saturday afternoon at the Australian War Memorial. The presentation commenced with the Band playing the Anthem “Advance Australia Fair” followed by “Waltzing Matilda”. The music for the afternoon was especially chosen for the venue with the Band playing with sensitivity the hymn tune “Abide with Me”. A highlight of the afternoon was Lionel Wood’s vocal solo “I Still Call Australia Home” with band accompaniment and the Band’s playing of the march “Colonel Bogey and Seventy-Six Trombones” featuring the very capable trombone section.

A fellowship tea preceded a Cabaret Celebration on Saturday evening at the Tuggeranong Corps. The capacity audience enjoyed the varied program from commencement with the Bandsmen playing with enthusiasm the march “Joyful News”. Cornet soloist Arthur Withers delighted the audience with his playing of “Love Cannot Fail” with Band accompaniment. Experienced violin players Neville Philpot and Howard Davies played a violin duet “Czardas” which was well received by the audience.

Worship on Sunday morning commenced with a march “Launceston Citadel” which was significant as it had been composed for Launceston Corps’ 125th anniversary which was being celebrated on that very Sunday morning. Major John Simmonds, Executive Officer gave a thought provoking sermon on “Living Outside the Box” with scripture reference Romans 12: 1-3. Members of the congregation were able to follow the meaningful words on the screen of the Band message “Lord Make Me Like You!”. The final engagement for the weekend was at The Salvation Army’s Mountain View Aged Care where the residences enjoyed a varied and toe tapping program. All those who participated and those privileged to hear the excellent playing and messages from the Band, violinists and soloists agreed that it was a God glorifying week-end with all the praise going to God.

DIVISIONAL MEN’S CAMP - “TOWARDS BEING A BETTER MAN”

Great teaching was brought to the mountain resort by Jonathan Browning at the Divisional Men’s Camp on 8-10 November. . He spoke about how we can find a place, a home, in solitude with God. Bible Sessions were titled: Finding our way “Home” - Luke 15:11-32, Welcome “Home” Luke 15:11-32, Staying “Home” - John 17:20-26 and then finally Sunday Morning: Fear not– trust in me Mark 4:35-41. Jonathon left us with the prayer:

“Christ, as a light illumine and guide me. Christ, as a shield overshadow me. Christ under me Christ over me. Christ beside me, on my left and my right.

This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful. Be in the heart of all to whom I speak; in the mouth of each who speaks unto me. This

day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful. Christ as a light. Christ as a shield. Christ beside me, on my left and my right.”

Northumbria Community - morning prayers

Great Worship before each Bible Session and on Sunday was lead by Matt from CRS and Tony Baines. The worship team included, Tony, Matt, Tom, Avarind, Kyle, and Major Dean Clarke. It was an awesome sound as 50 men raised their voices in praise to God! Great fun on the Saturday night as Major Dean Clarke lead us in a “Minute to win it” style night of fun and games. High quality prizes were awards (Deans own special “Books of tips”).

Great Elective Activities were offered including: Fishing, Golf, Hiking Kosciusko, 4WD guided tour, and a Motorcycle lap of the Snowy mountains.

Looking forward now to 2014, we plan to have another camping weekend in the early part of the year again and a return to the mountain for the Jindabyne Retreat again in November .

Watch this space!

NEW RESOURCES AT DHQ CLOTH FOR THE CRADLE

This a "book of bits", containing a

wealth of different types of worship

resources: litanies, meditations,

monologues, poems, prayers,

readings, scripts and symbolic actions.

Its prime purpose is to allow the adult

world to re-discover the stories of

Christ's birth as speaking from and to adult experience,

rather than merely gaze from a distance at children re-

enacting the Nativity.

CLOTH FOR THE CRADLE's range and diversity offers a

unique source of elements for lay and clergy worship

planners and enablers. All of the material has been used

in celebrations and services of public worship, but little has

been previously published.

“And in despair I bowed my head;

"There is no peace on earth," I said;

"For hate is strong,

And mocks the song

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

"God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!

The wrong shall fail,

the right prevail,

With peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
