Dear Friends, If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. These are words from an ancient Christian writer, James. In effect, he’s saying “Put your money where your mouth is!” Words are cheap. Proclaiming what we believe is easy compared to living it. To make the point even more, just listen to what Jesus says to us in today’s gospel: Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. These words in Mark’s gospel are uttered just after Peter tries to dissuade the Master from his embrace of suffering and death. This was not the messiah that Peter was envisioning. He and his companions thought they had hitched their stars to Jesus’ seemingly obvious rise to power and glory. But we should not be too hard on them for we can be like them. Don’t we sometimes hear that if you believe in Christ then life will turn around for you, that you’ll be a success? I remember reading an email story from a friend of mine on 9/11. It told the story of three people caught in one of the towers that horrific day. It seems that one of the people called to a couple of coworkers, asking them if they surrendered their lives to Jesus. They said “Yes” and, according to the account, all three found themselves whisked out of danger. Whether such a thing happened that day, I don’t know. This was the only account I had read. But, I would submit, it betrays a view of Jesus that seems to ignore the line from Mark’s gospel, and the meaning behind James’ words about putting faith into action. I’m not denying that miracles can happen but this seems to be saying that only those who believe in Christ were saved that day. Believing in Jesus doesn’t mean we aren’t going to suffer. If that were so then what did his Cross tell us? It tells us He was especially with those who suffered so unjustly that day, not just those who made it through! If we take James and Jesus seriously then our response to the tough times in life has to be different than the popular stories we sometimes hear. What is that response? It’s certainly not checking the “faith credentials” of those around us. Instead, it’s being there with them and for them in their suffering because that’s where Christ is now. If we’re not there, then we’re not with him. It also means letting people who want to be there with us in our hell to be there for us. Christ didn’t call us to be stoics. He called us to follow him as human beings, supporting each other in the best ways we can, as he did and still does in us and through us. This is what a Christian community is meant to be about. We’re meant to imitate Jesus in being there for and with each other. It’s not always easy. It sometimes is a real pain. But, when the rubber hits the road, carrying the cross is the only place the followers of Christ can be. On a lighter note, I want to thank all those who have been working so hard preparing for our Street Faire this year, and those who will volunteer to work. This too, I believe, is putting faith into action for we are “being there for each other.” Love, Fr. Joe

These are words from an ancient Christian writer, James. In effect, he’s saying “Put your money where your mouth is!” Words are cheap. Proclaiming what we believe is easy compared to living it. To make the point even more, just listen to what Jesus says to us in today’s gospel:

Prayer is like watching for the Kingfisher. All you can do is Be there where he is likes to appear, and Wait. Often nothing much happens; There is space, silence and Expectancy. No visible signs, only the Knowledge that he’s been there And may come again. Seeing or not seeing cease to matter, You have been prepared But when you’ve almost stopped Expecting it, a flash of brightness Gives encouragement.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny

himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

– Mark 8:34

When we truly believe that all we have is a

gift from God, then we must be willing to

give up some things so that we can share our

blessings as God intended. Living a

stewardship lifestyle means not only being

responsible for our own life, but the lives of

others as well.

A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack

tenderness, compassion, and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining

completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor,

or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted….

Everything is connected. Concern for the environment needs to be connected to a sincere love for our fellow human beings

and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society.

Pope Francis from his encyclical Laudato Si:

On Care for our Common Home

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Did You Know…..

The Second Vatican Council looked back at how the early Church initiated those who wanted

to learn how to live as part of the Catholic community and restored the “catechumenate”

process that we use today (which is also known as R.C.I.A.) . If you (or someone you know) are not a Catholic and you are curious about the Catholic faith,

or are Catholic but have not completed your sacraments,

We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment.

Our parish will soon begin a set of sessions to share with others the beauty of the Catholic faith and the

fellowship of our church family. These sessions are also opportunities for you to ask any questions you may

have about the Church.

We meet on the 1st and 3

rd Monday of the month at 7:00 pm. All sessions are held

at the Rectory.

Our introductory session is Sept. 28th at 7:00pm.

Our regular sessions begin on Oct. 5th

at 7:00pm.

Feel free to join us. Please give us a call if you have questions or would like further info. at 201-791-1616.

As summer ends, families fall into the routine of school, homework, extra-curricular activities, etc. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming!

Do you ever feel like you need some advice? Direction? Guidance?

YOU’RE NOT ALONE! St. Anne Parish is sponsoring an 8-week STEP program—Systematic Training for Effective Parenting—for parents of children ages 6-12. The presenter will be Bernadette Kennedy, a registered nurse and mental health counselor. The 8 sessions will be held on Thursdays from 7:30-9pm in the Cornerstone Room of the Rectory: October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19. The cost for the 8 weeks is just $40, which includes the participant’s handbook. To register, please fill out the tear-off below and return to the Faith Formation Office by September 21. You will receive a confirmation via email.

Service… Impelled by the Spirit of Jesus, St. Anne’s strives to reach out to others. In works on behalf of justice, charity, and human

development, we seek to imitate Jesus in bringing glad tidings to the poor, liberty to the oppressed and captives, and healing to

the blind and the sick. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact Fr. Joe or Fr. Colin.
