Br. Knights, Thank you for your excellent turnout at our December Business Meeting and the Fraternal Evening which followed. A big thank-you to Br. Mike Kiernicki and his wife Hazel for shopping for the event and for cooking up the delicious pot of chili. Thank you to Frances Stelman and her crew for the wonderful job of preparing, setting up and serving the wonderful meal and, a thank you to Br. Robert Moroz for looking after the refreshment table. Br. Larry has indicated that he is inundated with work involving the Grey Cup and Super Bowl raffle tickets so I am helping him out for another few weeks as Grand Knight. Br. Larry will serve as our Council’s Grand Knight for the remainder of this Columbian year. Now that we have completed the first half of this Columbian year, although we have some items to finish, we can look forward to new challenges in the New Year. Our next event is the Fish Fry which begins on Friday, February 12th and continues to March 18th. This is our Council’s biggest event of the year which not only serves our parish but our community at large. Many volunteers are required to make this event successful and we encourage some of our younger Knights to volunteer to help as some of our older Knights will be seeking warmer climates to ease their ailments. By the way, Phoenix, Arizona had a high of 1C today, so don't be in a big hurry to get there. See you at the January 11th Council Meeting. Brother Knights,

Here we are at the end of another calendar year, it has gone by

so quickly. However if we look back we realize that we have accomplished a great deal

in what seems to be such a short period of time. Most recent being the Wine Tasting

event fundraiser, Light Up for Christmas, helping with the Saint Nicholas Concert, the

distribution of the “It’s OK to Wish Me A Merry Christmas” badges, and the donation

of sales of the “Cross of Christ” to the Christian Refugee Relief fund to assist displaced

Christians in the Middle East. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to all those who partici-

pated in these events.

I would like wish all Brothers and their families a Blessed, Prosperous, and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

A CULTURE OF LIFE

Cultivating a Culture of Care and Compassion in Today's Society

What do we mean by the word “culture”? In this context, culture means the system of beliefs and practices that guide people. For instance, if we believe that others deserve our respect, then we will not harm others, and moreover, will take steps to help them.

The term “Culture of Life” is fairly new. Most of us have heard very little about it, and what we have heard for the most part centres on issues of life and death. But Culture of Life is about so much more. It is a system of beliefs and practices that focuses on eve-rything that is positive about life....love, compassion, concern for one another---- or, to put it another way, on the first principle of the Knights: Charity. In a Culture of Life, we would seek to help others, not to put them down. We would readily reach out to those in distress rather than say that they should look after themselves. We would gladly assist oth-ers even if it involves a sacrifice of our time and finances.

COMPASSION

But today's society makes it difficult to do these things. “Looking after Number 1” is the message that we hear over and over. But fortunately there is another message as well. For example, the Catholic Health Corporation of Manitoba has launched a compassion project, and teaches us that com-passion is showing empathy, love and kindness to others. The incredible power of compassion is that it renews the receiver and the giver.

BEING, CARING, DOING

The Catholic Health Corporation teaches that compassion happens when three simple but important things take place:

When we each find the inner strength and take the time to notice how we and other people around us are feeling, we are truly being present. When we focus our attention and emotions on the other person’s needs, we are truly caring. And when we move to act in a way that is helpful we are doing something compassionate.

With all of this in mind, we face the challenge of being compassionate in our me-first society, and of showing love and life to those who need it. We must do these things because we have been taught and commanded by Christ to do so. It will not be easy. It will take courage and sacrifice. But we will have divine help...and it will be worth it. In actions that are small, and in ways that are grand, we must rise to that challenge....for we are the Knights of Columbus, the strong right arm of the Church. Little Things—Big Consequences

Not too long ago we had the opportunity to have a vaca-tion in Hawaii where, of course, there are many beautiful beaches. At one particular picturesque beach where the grandkids were snorkeling, close by was a rocky section. Here was a warning sign painted with large bold red let-tering that simply said, "Dangerous beach. When in doubt, don't." All too often in similar situations some daredevils tempt fate and alas, too late, they realize that they made a dras-tic mistake and have been hurt badly or even lost their life. "When in doubt, don't" is a handy motto to apply to every area of life—especially so in the area of relationships, morals and ethics. Many a person has started on a downward path in an ex-tremely small way saying to him/herself, "A little lie won't hurt; a little cheating won't be noticed; a little immoral slip isn't going to make any difference; one cigarette won't affect me; and one drug is meaningless. What they don't realize is that all too often little things lead to big things—either for good or bad. As a kid, I attended a tiny church in my hometown. I started serving God as a young teenager by picking up the hymnals after both church services on Sundays. Just a little thing, but one thing led to another, to another, and to another—until for the last four decades I have had the privilege of reaching multiplied thousands with the gospel around the world, first through a literature ministry and for the last decade via email and the Internet. The same principle applies to evil deeds. I imagine that the accountants at Enron, Arthur Andersen, WorldCom, etc., started in a very small way adjusting the books; here a small adjustment; there a small adjustment; next a little bigger adjustment; and so on until their companies col-lapsed. My former broker in Australia who handled my retirement fund—30 years of savings—stole my entire fund several years ago as well as those of at least eight other clients. He either hid all this money or spent it because, when he was ordered by the judge to pay up, he declared bank-ruptcy. It was only a short time before he started stealing that a large gambling center was opened not far from his office. My best guess is that he possibly started to gamble in a small way; began to lose money; then more money; then he stole from one client; lost more money; then stole from another client; and so on until he got caught. He has now spent some of his best retirement years in jail. When will we ever learn that sin has its own destructive pathway and that whatever we sow we reap—if not now, it will be later in eternity—unless we repent of our sins and turn to the Savior? The best advice is that which is painted on a sign on a rocky Hawaiian beach, "When in doubt, don't!" Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please help me to always live in harmony with life's principles as found in Your Word, the Bible. And, grant that our nation will realize that these are eternal and universal truths that cannot be bro-ken without dire consequences. Grant that we will confess our sins and waywardness and turn back to You. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus's name, amen." 1. Song of Solomon 2:15 (NASB). STATE DEPUTY’S MESSAGE State Deputy Br. Carl Brosch

January 2016 FR. SHYSHKOWICH COUNCIL #8925 Page 6 of 6

My Dear Brothers in Christ;

Our recruitment efforts in November have been out-standing! We have more than doubled our membership numbers in one month compared with the first four months of this Columbian year. Manitoba finished FIRST in Canada in membership recruitment, a hearty ‘well done’ to all councils involved in recruiting this past month. Recently, the Supreme Knight, Carl A. Anderson, announced that the refund of supreme per capita for star councils would continue this year. This means that councils who reach star council status this Columbian year would be reimbursed Supreme per capita ($4.50) for every billable council member.

But membership is not a numbers game. To the council these new members can mean survival and assistance in the many programs offered to the church and commu-nity. To the members membership means belonging and a development of their faith.

We will need to continue this strong effort by continu-ing to hold church blitzes and recruitment seminars every month. All councils are urged to schedule a First degree each month either as a separate date or in con-junction with your regular council meeting. If your members know that a First Degree is regularly sched-uled each month, they will be more willing to recruit for that Degree. Don’t cancel Degree dates, but rather if no new members are initiated that month, use it as a practice session for your council.

On November 11, it was my honour, along with Brother Larry Kustra, Supreme Director and PSD, Brother Merlyn Onsychuk, PSD and Marcel Wozny, Former Vice Supreme Master and PSD, to conduct the First, Second and Third Degrees of our Order for His Grace, Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak, OSBM, Archbishop of Winnipeg and Metropolitan for Ukrainian Catholics in Canada that afternoon at his office. Please join me in welcoming His Grace to our Order!

At the State Deputy’s Mid-Year meeting last month, our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson outlined the di-rection our Order must go in the future by Building the Domestic Church While Strengthening Our Par-ish. Councils must become more integrated into their parishes, moving away from the Home Corporation model to become a parish based council. Youth ac-tivities such as the Boy Scouts will no longer be a council sponsored activity, but rather Troops should be part of the Youth Ministry within the parish. Full details of Supreme Knight Carl Anderson’s remarks will be available in the December issue of Columbia.

On January 8, 9 and 10, 2016, we will be holding a Recruitment Drive Skills Workshop and Blitz with the goal of training 20 Super Teams of about 4-5 members each to go out that weekend to do parish membership blitzes. If you are interested in being a part of this exciting new initiative, please call me at 204-981-6390 for further information. The weekend Workshop and Blitz will be conducted by our Su-preme Membership and Program Consultant Brother Guy Precourt, PSD.

As we celebrate birth of Christ, Susan and I wish each and every one of you and your families a blessed and joyous Christmas! Merry Christmas! Vivat Jesus

Husband and Wife Christmas Shopping A couple were in a busy shopping centre just before Christmas. The wife suddenly noticed that her husband was miss-ing and as they had a lot to do, she called him on the mobile. The wife said " Where are you, you know we have lots to do" He said " You remember the jewelers we went into about 10 years ago, and you fell in love with that dia-mond necklace. I could not afford it at the time and I said that one day I would get it for you " Little tears started to flow down her cheek and she got all choked up;"Yes, I do remember that shop" she replied.. "Well I’m in the pub next to that." GK Norris Pawlychka & DD Gerald Pronyk
