Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 1
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Jesus Christ Is Extraordinarily Generous. Christ himself is the generous landowner in today’s parable, and the lesson he wants us to learn is that his generosity goes beyond even our widest comprehension. This is why in the First Reading God tells us that "My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways." To pay these hired workers a full day's wage for only a few hours of work is the epitome of generosity. There is no other reason for it; he does it simply because he is generous; he is deeply concerned about these men and capable of helping them. Palestine's day laborers at that time had no steady work and no steady income. They were hired on a day-to-day basis. The workers still waiting to be given work late in the day were probably resigned to another hungry evening for themselves and their families. Only a man with a truly generous heart would take the trouble to put them to work with only an hour remaining till sundown. And only an extraordinarily generous man would pay them the full day's wage! That's Jesus. Jesus Christ is extraordinarily generous; the history of salvation is the story of his boundless giving. First he gives life. Then, after Original sin, he gives hope for salvation. Then with the Incarnation he gives redemption. And finally, to those who faithfully work in his vineyard, he gives everlasting heavenly bliss. And it doesn't stop there. Strictly speaking, we deserve none of those gifts. And yet, just as the landowner gave the laborers real work to do in his vineyard, even if the reward far outweighed the work, Christ too allows us to make a real contribution to the eternal happiness of ourselves through prayer, self-sacrifice, and service. Jesus Christ is a volcano of generous love!
Yours in Christ, Fr. Tom
(Fr. Tom is on Retreat this week.)
A LETTER FROM BISHOP CALVO Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We begin another season in our efforts to instill in our communities and nation a true respect for the sanctity of life. As part of the variety of ways we can participate, I call to your attention the 40 Days for Life campaign, which in our diocese has three key components: prayer and fasting; prayerful vigil; and community outreach. This campaign will begin September 23rd and end Sunday, November 1st. The idea of forty days focuses on a time of prayer and penance when we turn our hearts to God. It is a time of conversion, a change of heart. Through the 40 Days of Life we pray that there will be conversion in the hearts of people in our country, so that they will cherish and respect God’s gift of life and there will be an end to abortion.
Entrusting our efforts to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno

Finding the True Cross Christ's desire to accompany us in our sufferings and to use them to show his love for us was dramatically evident in the events surrounding the finding of the true Cross in the early 300s. Constantine was the Emperor of Rome, his power extending throughout Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. He legalized and encouraged Christianity, and his mother, St Helen, made a pilgrimage to Palestine. While in Jerusalem, with the help of St Macarius, Jerusalem's bishop, she began excavations on the hill of Calvary, with hopes of uncovering the Cross upon which Jesus had been crucified. (Local tradition said that it had been buried nearby.) To everyone's joy and astonishment, the excavations soon uncovered not one, but three crosses - two used for the two thieves crucified with Jesus, one used for Christ himself. How to figure out which was which? St Macarius had an inspired idea. He had all three crosses brought to the house of one of his parishioners, a woman ill to the point of death. He prayed that God would reveal which cross was the holy one, and then he touched the three crosses to the dying woman's skin. With the first two, nothing happened. With the third, the woman opened her eyes and rose from bed, in the best of health. The true Cross had been found. St. Helen had a basilica constructed on Calvary, where the holy relic was kept. Centuries later, the Persian Empire conquered Jerusalem and confiscated the sacred wood. The Roman Emperor recovered the Cross on September 14, 614, and ever since then the Church has celebrated this feast of the exaltation or triumph of the Cross. It is precisely in the midst of our sufferings where Christ can best show us his love, grace, and power. That's why the Christian never has to suffer alone.
Prayer of St Macarius at the discovery of the true cross (recorded by Rufinus):
"O God, who through your only-begotten Son, has inspired the heart of your handmaid [that would be St Helen] to seek the holy wood upon which our salvation depends, show plainly which cross was identified with the glory of the Lord and which served for the punishment of souls. Grant that as soon as the health-giving wood touches this woman who is lying half-dead, she may be recalled to life from the gates of death.”
COVID PRAYER Gracious God, hear our prayer in these disturbing times. We ask you to hear the sounds of those who are gasping for breath in hospitals, nursing homes and retirement facilities, and those suffering alone in the streets of our cities and towns. Reach out with your healing power to those who are grieving the loss of loved ones. Be present to the doctors, nurses and front line care providers who are exhausted from their efforts in this time of a pandemic that threatens the lives of so many of your people world wide. Strengthen with your wisdom our public government and health officials who are seeking ways to stop and control the spread of this virus by encouraging their citizenry to be calm, reflective and obedient to the restrictions imposed for the benefit of all. We make this prayer in your most Holy Name. Amen

—RESERVATIONS & MASKS ARE NECESSARY TO ATTEND MASS—
So that all may attend one of the weekend Masses, please remember that seating is limited. We can only have 50 people at each Mass and we have 2000 families to accommodate. The 50 maximum includes the priest, music ministry, lector, ushers, etc. Many people are disappointed when calling to find out that their Mass is already full. The Governor has mandated that only 50 people may gather at one time. If we go over this limit, he has indicated that he will have to close our doors. If you want to go to several Masses, please attend the weekday Masses. There is no need to call for a reservation for these daily Masses. Thank you for understanding this limited seating situation due to Covid 19. It is also mandated by the Governor that masks must be worn. The Diocese Protocols are in agreement with this State order. We do not want Mass time to be a time of contention, please abide by this order or we must ask you to leave so the church is not shut down. Thanks for your attention to these mandates.
