Fractions Summer 2015
Transcript

FractionsSummer 2015

• Students partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarters of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Students understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares. (1.G.3)

2

Grade 1

• Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of , a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape. (2.G.3)

3

2nd Grade

• In this grade, students learn about unit fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8, and begin to accumulate these to build more fractions of the same denominator. Students recognize and know the meaning of the symbol of a fraction.• Students identify a unit fraction on the number

line and iterate them to find values of other fractions, even fractions larger than 1.

Fractions - Conceptually

More than 1 or Less than 1

Explain your reasoning

Is the answer bigger when you multiply?

• Try these…Are all answers bigger than 4?

•4 x 2•4 x 2 ½ •4 x ½

When do you need to multiply fractions?

Resources• K-5 Math Teaching Resources• Fraction concepts & operations online virtual manipulatives:

Number Line Bars - Fractions – Divide fractions using number line bars.Fraction Bars – Learn about fractions using fraction bars.Fraction Pieces – Work with parts and wholes to learn about fractions.Fractions - Adding – Illustrates what it means to find a common denominator and combine.Fractions - Comparing – Judge the size of fractions and plot them on a number line.Fractions - Equivalent – Illustrates relationships between equivalent fractions.Fractions - Naming – Write the fraction corresponding to the highlighted portion of a shape.Fractions - Parts of a Whole – Relates parts of a whole unit to written description and fraction.Fractions - Rectangle Multiplication – Visualize and practice multiplying fractions using an area representation.Fractions - Visualizing – Illustrate a fraction by dividing a shape and highlighting the appropriate parts.
