The goal of our Session is that of delivering some policy recommendations, identifyingbenefits and risks of global R&D and Innovation cooperation, through the participationof high level speakers from an outstanding globally acting Research and InnovationFoundation and three very relevant global Manufacturing Companies. They will bring tous their reach experience and vision.

The EU, in the past quarter of century, has been promoting and supporting – throughFramework Programs and related Initiatives – Research and Innovation Cooperation, mostly within EU, addressing economic growth, sustainable development. As we know, similar approach has been taken by EU Member States and, progressively, by EURegions.

Following Lisbon 2000 strategy, Manufacturing became a strategic issue, concerningR&D and Innovation. Impressive results were and are being achieved, as reported bythis Conference. Manufuture has been and is strategically contributing. New initiatives

are starting to promote and support EU Manufacturing Renaissance.

A country’s prosperity depends on its participation in the global economy, which in turn depends on its integration in global value chains (GVC). This helps countries strengthen their productive capacities, access a broader portfolio of technologies, skills or knowledge-intensive assets and supports growth.

GVCs are changing the international division of labor and accelerated the internationalization of R&D , Innovation and Education.

As stated by the OECD there is a shift in the global knowledge and innovation geography with both being increasingly generated and developed in regions outsideEurope, as well as North America and Japan. Countries, which in some respects are still regarded as being in the early stages of economic development, are increasingly driving global knowledge and innovation development.

It is time -as Moedas, the EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, says -to open to the external globalizing world, looking for global Research and Innovation cooperation benefits, as well as risks.

This was a very far away dream of Manufuture as shown by this picture, presented at the first Manufuture Conference in Milano, in December 2003.
