Today’s program will focus on providing you and yourfranchise system with practical business solutions to new and emerging franchise industry legal issues. The issues you face are growing in complexity, costand consequence. We have assembled a group of experts who are among Canada’s foremost franchise law practitioners and franchise business leaders to direct our discussions at the plenary sessions, workshops and roundtables. Our program focuses not just on the most recent legal developments this past year, but on some of the most practical business solutions implemented by our experts in franchising.
We will begin this year’s program with our Legal and Legislative Update. David Kornhauser of Macdonald, Sager, Manis LLP and Lara Di Genova of Teplitsky Colson LLP will get your day started with a fast paced review of the highlights from the past year in franchise case law and legislation.
Today’s Concurrent Workshops have been designed to be of interest to business representatives, in house counsel and external franchise lawyers. We have developed workshops to focus on practical business issues, including the integration of third party delivery vendors, the use of multi-unit and multi-brand franchising arrangements, the
legal and business implications of major system changes, franchise implications of the upcoming overhaul to Canadian trademark laws, disclosure of financial performance representations, and the accounting of statutory rescission damages.
You will also be able to participate in roundtable discussions where you will learn and exchange ideas in a smaller forum with other attendees on a variety of cutting edge topics.
Our program will conclude back in this room with an exciting panel discussion entitled "Frannabis - the Intersection of Cannabis Legalization and Franchising”. As many of you know, Canada’s federal government has announced that recreational use of cannabis will become legal in less than one month on October 17,2018. With that legalization, of course, comes exciting new challenges and opportunities forfranchising and franchise law. Franchise law experts Debi Sutin, Frank Robinson and Chad Finkelstein will bejoined by Darren Bondar, the President and CEO of Spirit Leaf an emerging franchisor blazing a trail in the industry of legal retail cannabis sales, to discuss this budding new area.
