• With a population of 1108 million people at present to 1269 million by 2016, the economy is booming with the proliferation of entrepreneurial opportunities and free enterprise

• With the 1991 reforms there emerged a new India, an India of new ideas and vision for its future

• This India was a hub of business possibilities and innovation. There were technocrats, IT professionals, educated and not so educated but enterprising people all waiting to venture in to the new market arena. Thus was born the new India

• India’s projected economic prosperity is likely to be spearheaded by a real GDP growth of 8-9 per cent with a possible annual per capita income of Rs. 50,000 by 2012. This macro growth would entail significant sub trends like a increase in high-income households, led primarily by urban India

• Between 2005-06 and 2013-14, the number of households with annual income greater than Rs. 12 lakh will grow nearly fourfold. Within this band, there are 3.4 million households with an income in excess of Rs 24 lakh at 2005-06 prices

• This segment is likely to include more than 15 million people, greater than the population of Denmark, Finland and Ireland put together

• India’s youth, comprising over 50 percent of its population, is referred to as its demographic dividend

• A rough statistics in the past year estimates the presence of 367 universities, 18,000 colleges, half-a-million teachers and about 11 million students on the rolls (Source- ibef.org)

• Statistics reveal that less than 25% of the graduates are actually employable. It is believed that based on the current and future manpower requirements of the various sectors, there is a huge demand-supply gap in the education space

• The latest news that India’s education sector is forecasted to increase its IT spending from an estimated $356 million in 2008 to $704 million by 2012, reflecting in a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 19 percent during 2007-2012, according to the research study by Springboard Research, an IT Market Research industry (Source - Silicon India)

IS NOW A GOOD TIME? People being made redundant, have a pay off and its difficult to find new jobs

Businesses have less money to expand using company owned expansion

The success rates are higher for both franchisors and franchisees than for non franchise businesses

For Franchising to succeed still need to apply proper / sound business practices

IS NOW A GOOD TIME?In India, acceptability for franchising is growing by the day and it has a fairly wide industry spread.

There are approx. 1150 established franchisors, 75,000 franchisees with an annual turnover around Rs.12, 000 crore and employing around 500000 persons.

Between 2004 and 2007, the franchised Business systems grew in the country by almost 100 per cent, and this proved a positive sign for small business development in India and the catalytic role played by franchising to spur the growth of the system.
