New Knights in the Portuguese Order of Santiago during the Mastership of Dom Jorge, 1492-15501

Dom Jorge was born in Abrantes on 12 August 1481, the illegitimate son of Crown Prince João, shortly before the latter became João II of Portugal (r. 1481-95).2 Dom Jorge’s mother was Dona Ana de Mendonça, daughter of Nuno de Mendonça, Aposentador-mor of João’s father, King Afonso V (r. 1438-81). Dona Ana was a dama or lady-in-waiting to D. Joana, a Excelente Senhora (known to Castilians as “La Beltraneja”). Shortly after his birth, Dom Jorge was entrusted to his aunt (his father’s sister Princess Joana, later known as Santa Joana) who was living in the Dominican Convento de Jesus in Aveiro. There and later he was also educated under the tutelage of the Italian humanist, Cataldo Parísio Sículo. D. Jorge remained in Aveiro until the death of his aunt in May of 1490. He then moved to Court about the same time his half-brother Crown Prince Afonso was marrying Princess Isabel, daughter of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabel of Castile. Prince Afonso died in a horseback riding accident near Santarém on 13 July 1491, throwing open the Portuguese succession. Because of strong opposition to the legitimization of Dom Jorge, João II reluctantly named his first cousin and brother-in-law, Manuel, as his successor. Manuel, Duke of Beja, was Master of the Order of Christ since 1484, having succeeded his brother D. Diogo, after João II had stabbed the latter to death for treason earlier that year.

João II, both as prince and as king, had been master of the Order of Avis (since 1468) and the Order of Santiago (since 1476). At an unknown date, João II had both masterships transferred to his son and heir, Prince Afonso (1475-91). But with Prince Afonso dead, João obtained these masterships for Dom Jorge. On 29 December 1491, by the papal bull “Eximiae devotionis,” eleven-year-old D. Jorge was named master of the Orders of Santiago and Avis. Formal ceremonies were held in Lisbon’s monastery of São Domingos on 12 April 1492. Thus, when King João II died on 25 October 1495, the Orders of Santiago and Avis were under the mastership of fourteen-year-old Dom Jorge and the Order of Christ was under the mastership of twenty-six-year-old Manuel, the new king of Portugal. Though relations between D. Jorge and D. Manuel may have been awkward from the start since both had been contenders for the Portuguese throne, the relationship between the two was probably not too different than that between fifteen-year-old Manuel and King João II after that monarch had dispatched Manuel’s brother in 1484.

King Manuel arranged Dom Jorge’s marriage in May of 1500 to D. Brites de Bragança, daughter of D. Álvaro and niece of D. Fernando, 3rd Duke of Bragança, whom João II had publicly executed in 1483 in Évora for treason.

1 An earlier version of this study, with the title “Master Dom Jorge and the Portuguese Order of Santiago, 1492-1550,” was presented at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference, San Antonio, Texas, 25 October 2002. 2 Until very recently, little work has been done on D. Jorge. Scholars have relied heavily on D. António Caetano de Sousa, História Genealógica da Casa Real Portuguesa (1946-54). The first edition of this volume was published in 1745. Dom Jorge spent most of his life after 1500 in Setúbal (a Santiago town), located on the north estuary of the Rio Sado, not far from the Atlantic Ocean, and relatively close to Palmela (a few miles away as the crow flies), the headquarters of the Order of Santiago.

All three Portuguese military orders had both knights and clergy as members. Knights in the Order of Santiago had always been allowed to marry. But it was not until 1496 that the same privilege was granted to knights in the Orders of Christ and Avis. Allowing knights to marry opened a wide array of patronage possibilities that all three orders would use until 1834. Knighthoods in the Portuguese military orders increasingly became important status symbols. For some these symbols were coupled with financial rewards.

After becoming monarch, Manuel sought to make the Order of Christ –the Order of which he was master– the wealthiest, largest, and most prestigious of the three Portuguese military orders. Dom Jorge tried to do the same for the Orders of Santiago and Avis –especially Santiago– and during his mastership (1492 to his death on 22 July 1550), the Portuguese Order of Santiago reached its apogee in terms of prestige and the number of new knights. This study attempts to determine the names of new knights during the years Dom Jorge was master and discover their social and regional backgrounds.

It is clear that during the years that Dom Jorge was Master more new members by far entered the Order of Santiago than at any other comparable time period before 1777. During the second half of his mastership (1525 to his death) the number of new knights more than doubled from the first half.

The question –and the subject of ongoing research– is how many men became knights in the Order of Santiago during the mastership of Dom Jorge? Before trying to answer this question, it is important to discuss the process of becoming a knight of Santiago and the sources available to determine as closely as possible the number of new knights that entered between 1492-1550.

After a sometimes perfunctory background investigation (the results of only a relative few have survived for the first half of the sixteenth century),3 the Master Dom Jorge issued letters authorizing the ceremonies for the reception of the habit and the knighting of the new member. Copies of these letters (and sometimes only synopses) were kept in the Order’s registry books and papers. Once the ceremonies had taken place, affidavits stating such were sent to the Order’s headquarters at Palmela and noted in the Order’s Livro de Matrícula.

Unfortunately, the Order’s Livros de Matrícula are not complete, but from the fragments, Maria José Mexia Bigotte Chorão has provided a list of knights and clergy whose entrance ceremonies were performed. For the years to 1550 the information is available for 503 knights. However, there is no information for new knights in the Order of Santiago for the years 1498, 1512-21, only two cases for 1522-24, and nothing for 1548-50. Though information found in the Livro de Matrícula gives scholars the greatest certainty as to who was in the Order, there are problems. The most serious, as mentioned above, is that seventeen years of D. Jorge’s fifty-eight-year mastership are missing. In addition, not all affidavits that the ceremonies took place reached Palmela. Of those that did, some have been lost not only for the years mentioned above, but for others as well. However, these last two problems probably affected a relatively small number of new knights.

3 The results of these background investigations are found in Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo, Habilitações da Ordem de Santiago. For example, the background information for João Ribeiro, who became a knight of Santiago in 1529, is found in Letra J, Maço 10, Número 53. In the list of new knights appended to this study, such Habilitação references are shortened to J-10-53 (in the case of João Ribeiro). For the time period being studied, Habilitações for 75 of those aspiring to become knights are known.

Therefore scholars must rely on the Order’s registry books and collections that contain copies or synopses of the cartas de hábito and the alvarás para armar cavaleiro, which authorized that the ceremonies take place. But these records are not complete either. Some of the registry books are in very poor condition, with folio pages in fragments. Often entire folio pages are missing. And in a few cases, even expert paleographers cannot agree in the identification of a name. Furthermore, someone who was issued a carta de hábito may have died before the ceremonies took place or decided not to use it. In a handful of cases, persons who were minors received permission to enter the Order of Santiago earlier. They were issued a carta de hábito as minors. When they became of age, they were issued another carta de hábito. For our purposes the year of entrance into the order is given when they received their first carta de hábito, even if they were underage.

Because Dom Jorge was Master of both the Order of Santiago and the Order of Avis, the registry books sometimes intermingled the records of both orders. In addition, there were both knights and clergy (both conventual and parish) in both orders and, at times, it is not clear whether the carta de hábito was for one becoming a knight or for the clergy (the latter not concerning us for this study). And, to further complicate matters, some knights and clergy, after a period of time, decided to switch from one order to the other.

There was also the alvará de profissão (of vows). It should be noted that, although these vows approximated the vows required of members of such religious orders as the Franciscans and the Benedictines, for all the Portuguese military orders after 1496 the vows for the knights required little more than what was already required of a Christian layperson.4 Not every knight who had a habit made a profession of vows. Some did, out of personal devotion, but most knights who made a profession of vows were required to do so because they were becoming commanders or receiving substantial amounts of money from the Order. (It should be pointed out that the clergy of the Order both received the habit and made profession of vows, but in this time period were not knighted). Sometimes a period of time elapsed between the reception of the habit and the professions of vows. For some members of the Order, we have only the registry entry for the profession of vows and no date for the carta de hábito. Clearly a knight who made profession of vows was a member of the Order. But if his carta de hábito is missing, it is difficult to determine peak periods when men became knights of Santiago.

There are also knights for whom we have neither a carta de hábito nor a listing in the Livros de Matrícula, but whom we know were knights from other sources. This results in the same problem of having the evidence of the profession of vows but not of the reception of the hábito and the knighthood.

Finally, what should be done when the date of the entry in the Livro de Matrícula differs from the date of the carta de hábito? When the latter was issued late in the year, the ceremonies not unfrequently took place early the next year. In the list appended to this study, I have found forty-four such cases and listed them under the date of the carta de hábito. In addition, more than a dozen entries in the Livro de Matrícula refer to profession of vows and not the reception of the habit and knighthood.

That being said, how many men became knights in the Order of Santiago from April 1492 to 22 July 1550 (the years when D. Jorge was master) and who were they?

In a study published in 1998 based on the Livro de Matrícula and the Order’s registry books, I wrote: “For the twenty-five years and seven months (1 January 1525 to 22 July 1550 when D.

Jorge died), the names of 581 men who became knights of Santiago are known, for an average of twenty-two a year, probably the order’s apogee as far as the number of new knights is concerned” (1998, 237). Since then, I have been able to refine the number and names for a new total of 565. But the yearly average of twenty-two remains unchanged. What is clear is that the number of new knights in the Order of Santiago greatly increased during the second half of D. Jorge’s mastership. A partial, but significant, explanation is that D. Jorge seems to have been in competition with King Manuel and later his son King João III, both of whom as Masters of the Order of Christ were greatly increasing the number of new knights in that Order, especially after 1511.5

As mentioned earlier, the Order’s Livro de Matrícula gives us the names of 503 knights whose affidavits were entered into the Order’s rolls. However, Maria Cristina Gomes Pimenta carefully examined the little (if ever) used and practically unknown Colecção Especial containing documents dealing with D. Jorge (Caixas 73 through 77, with each caixa containing two maços) –a total of more than 1350 documents of various kinds. By carefully studying this collection, she was able to identify 131 new knights about whom I had not known –mostly for the years 1510-22, a major period missing from the Livro de Matrícula. In her massive study entitled As Ordens de Avis e de Santiago na Baixa Idade Media. O Governo de D. Jorge, she examines a very wide variety of topics. In Apêndice 2 –“Componente humana das Ordens de Avis e de Santiago” (300-600)– she attempts to give the names and pertinent information (and where it was found) for the knights, commanders, clergy and all those connected (many neither knights nor clergy) with either or both of the two orders of Santiago and Avis or with Master D. Jorge himself. From this research, she determined that there were 662 new knights in the Order of Santiago during the mastership of D. Jorge. As mentioned earlier, her major contribution to solving the puzzle was finding the names of 131 new knights. However, my research, now including the 131 new knights, provides the names of 857 new members, based on the Livro de Matrícula and records of the cartas de hábito. And from other sources, I am convinced that the total number of new knights will eventually approach the 900 mark. For example, no carta de hábito or entry in the Livro de Matrícula has been found for João de Calataud, commander of Herdade do Rio de Moinhos, who attended the General Chapter of the Order in 1564. Because those attending were listed by order of precedence, it is clear that Calataud become a member in the first half of 1520 or earlier. But because the year of his entry into the Order cannot be determined precisely, he is not included in the appended list or counted among the 857.6 But clearly he was a knight in the Order during the years Dom Jorge was Master. There are at least several dozen similar examples where men were known as knights of Santiago, but their cartas de hábito are missing and they are not listed in the Order’s Livro de Matrícula.

To put the number of new knights (857) during the fifty-eight-year mastership of Dom Jorge in perspective, it should be noted that during the 181 years from 1569 to 1750, 1054 men are known to have become knights in the Order of Santiago. (For the years after Dom Jorge’s death to 1569, the records of the Order are missing, but all indications are that new members averaged only two or less a year, as King João III and his successor King Sebastian downgraded the Orders of Santiago and Avis numerically to further the prestige of the Order of Christ).

What geographical regions did these new knights represent? Data is scanty and information

on birthplaces or residences at this stage of my research is missing for more than two-thirds of the new knights. Not surprisingly, the largest number of new knights came from Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and largest city. At least fifty-one are known. Large numbers of new knights came from Santiago towns and villages, with Setúbal and Alcácer do Sal leading with twenty-seven and eleven, respectively, followed by Torrão with six, Santiago do Cacém with five, and Alhos Vedros with four each. The Algarve had twelve (including Tavira with five and Faro with four). Others came from important towns in the northern two-thirds of Portugal: Viseu had ten; Coimbra eight. In the southern third of Portugal Torres Novas had ten (Dom Jorge’s son was the 1st Marquis of Torres Novas), Santarém nine and Évora seven. But the big surprise was the large number of new knights (at least fifty-six) who came from Portugal’s Atlantic Islands. Madeira, the Azores (São Miguel, Faial, Terceira, Graciosa), the Cape Verdes and São Tomé.7 There was also a fairly strong foreign contingent, some of whom seem to have become naturalized Portuguese citizens.

Both as Master of the Orders of Santiago and Avis and as Duke of Coimbra, D. Jorge had a large household with many retainers and servants.8 D. Jorge rewarded elite members of his household and his retainers with knighthoods in the Order of Santiago (and Avis) to further embellish both his and their prestige. Some of these men were identified as “Fidalgo of the Household of Dom Jorge,” others as “Knight of the Household of Dom Jorge,” “Escudeiro or Squire of the Household of Dom Jorge,” or “Moço da Câmara of the Household of Dom Jorge.” The majority was described simply as “Retainer [criado] of Master Dom Jorge.” More than sixty members of his household are known to have become knights in the Order of Santiago (and a much smaller number became knights of Avis). Of course there were also servants who did the routine work, who were not rewarded with knighthoods in Santiago and Avis. Others complained that even the monetary compensation was meager. Fernão Mendes Pinto, in the first chapter of his Peregrinação, describes the latter through the voice of his protagonist: “We made our way to Setúbal, where it was my luck to be hired by a nobleman by the name of Francisco de Faria, who was attached to the household of the master of the Order of Santiago. I served him for four years, and at the end of that time, in recognition of my years of good service, he recommended me to

7 Francis A. Dutra, “The Order of Santiago and the Portuguese Atlantic Islands, 1492-1777” (2001). 8 There have been relatively few studies of Portuguese noble and royal households. The best efforts to date for the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries are Rita Costa Gomes, A Corte dos Reis de Portugal no Final da Idade Média (1995) (An English translation is scheduled to be published by Cambridge University Press in early 2003); João Silva de Sousa, A Casa Senhorial do Infante D. the master himself, whom I served in turn as moço da câmara for a year and a half. But since the salaries paid by princes in those days was not enough for me to live on, I decided to leave for India, meager as my resources were, and I was perfectly willing to accept, for better or worse, whatever fate had in store for me” (Catz 2)9

The Master of Santiago and Avis was also very generous in granting knighthoods to members of households and retainers of others, such as kings, queens, high-ranking ecclesiastics and family allies. At least ten men identified as being members of King João III’s household became knights in the Order of Santiago. On a much smaller scale, Dom Jorge granted knighthoods in the Order of Santiago to members of the households of the Dowager Queen Leonor (widow of King João II), Queen Maria (second wife of King Manuel), Queen Catherine of Austria (wife of King João III), Queen Leonor (third wife and widow of King Manuel and new wife of Francis I of France), and Empress Isabel (wife of Charles V and sister of King João III). Between 1536 and 1540 four members of the household of Prince Luis (1506-55), a younger brother of King João III, became knights of Santiago.

Dom Jorge did not neglect the retainers of his sons, D. João de Lencastre, 1st Marquis of Torres Novas and later 1st Duke of Aveiro, and D. Afonso de Lencastre, the Order’s comendador-mor, rewarding several of them with knighthoods in Santiago. The same was true for several retainers of D. Fernando de Meneses, 2nd Marquis of Vila Real, and D. Teodósio, 5th Duke of Bragança, to name but a few. Shortly before he died, Dom Jorge granted a knighthood in Santiago to Luis Peres, the black camareiro-mor of the King of the Congo.

Dom Jorge was also an important patron of the arts. In 1520 he made Gregório Lopes a knight of Santiago, more than a century before Velasquez received a similar honor in the Spanish Order of Santiago. In 1550 Gregório’s son, the famed painter Cristóvão Lopes, would also become a knight in the Portuguese Order of Santiago.

Further study is needed to get a better picture of the social backgrounds of the almost nine hundred men who became knights of Santiago during the long mastership of Dom Jorge. However, the appended list of new knights is an important start to achieving this goal.
