FROM THE PRINCIPAL Term 2 has started with lots of work on our facilities. We will have contractors undertaking painting across the school as well as replacing floor coverings and part of the roof of D Block. Whilst this work does create some inconvenience for us the end result will be that our school has an improved learning environment. This term we welcome some new staff. Kim Wills is relieving Head Teacher HSIE for Scott Budden, Carmen Heggs is replacing Kirralee Andruschak who is on maternity leave and Elecia Harcombe is replacing Terry Connell. We also welcome Lauren Olsen in HSIE, Loren Collyer as an intern and John Milburn as our Director Educational Leadership. The P&C have generously provided funding for the purchase of a laser cutter for our school. This purchase presents amazing opportunities for students to engage with the latest technology in many subject areas. There will be a demonstration at the P&C meeting on June 19. All funds from the P&C are generated through the operation of our school canteen. If you can spare a couple of hours to volunteer please contact Lisa, our Canteen Manager on the school number. As technology is an integral part of our learning, there is a Bring You Own Device (BYOD) Information Session for Year 7 students 2019 being held on May 23, 5.00-6.30pm. I encourage you to come along and listen to the plan for how BYOD will be implemented in our school. I also encourage our school community to join our Facebook page and to check our website regularly to receive updated information on events occurring in the school. We are very proud of all our students and like to celebrate their successes. Recently, Zane Folpp has been successful in gaining entry to the STEMship Program and Jye Taylor has been selected to attend the 2018 USB Financial Academy. Congratulations to both boys on their achievements. Some reminders for term 2:
Uniform: Please ensure students have a warm plain black jacket and black pants. Coloured jackets and ones with logos, hoodies,
jeans and tracksuit pants are not part of our uniform.
Attendance: Students are expected to be on time to school and class. Absence should only be as a result of illness or family crisis.
Please respond to the text message sent home if your child is absent to avoid the absence being recorded as
unexplained.
Bus Bay: To ensure the safety of our students we ask that you do not enter the bus bay to drop off or pick up students.

FROM THE DEPUTIES
The cooler weather is upon us and so is the need to wear warmer clothing. Students have been reminded that we are a uniform school
as determined by the FGHS Parents & Citizens Association. Items can be purchased on site on Monday afternoons and Wednesday
mornings. All items can be viewed on the Alinta website. Plain black jumpers, black pants (not jeans or tights), tracksuit tops or bottoms
are also permitted. If there are financial issues or other reasons for not being able to wear correct uniform, let the relevant Deputy
Principal know so we can provide uniform assistance. There is also a pool of pre-loved clothing available in the BEST Faculty (contact
the school).
We are a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. We have been working hard on developing a clear understanding with our
students around the expectations in all areas of the school site. This has been by teaching explicit lessons to all students. Results have
been very positive with a decrease in anti-social behaviour and truancy. Visitors to the school will notice an abundance of signage
around the school reminding everyone of the expectations we have of the whole school community. PBL in the classrooms will now be
undertaken which will include: classroom management, behaviour modification, social competence, aiming for success and
communicating respectfully. The school uses VIVO rewards to acknowledge students meeting PBL expectations in behaviour and
learning in the classroom and also GOTCHAS to acknowledge positive students in the playground. VIVO’s enable students to purchase
items in an online store. Information about PBL@FGHS can be found on the school website www.francisgre-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/ and
also in posts on Facebook.
The picture insert is an example of our PBL School Expectations Matrix.
Students across the school will be completing assessment tasks in most subjects as we approach the start of the reporting cycle.
Encourage your children to ensure they are up to date with all tasks and ask their teachers for assistance if needed. Years 10/11/12 will
need to complete a Misadventure Form if they are unwell or absent from school resulting in non-completion of a task. These are available
from the Deputy Principals. Concerns with assessment work should be addressed with the teacher or Head Teacher of the relevant
faculty.
Parents, please ensure your details for contact are up to date. Contact the office if there is a change of address, phone number, e-mail
or carer arrangements. This is particularly important if we need to contact you in the event of an illness or injury.
Holiday leave outside normal school vacation times need to be submitted with a leave form which is available from the Front Office and
submit this prior to leaving. The department does not grant leave for this reason. Students missing school for family vacations will need
to be mindful of content, exams and assessment tasks missed and negotiate arrangements with their teacher.

PD/H/PE Personal Development, Health and Physical Education Welcome back to Term 2, parents and students. As always we have a busy schedule in PD/H/PE this term with curriculum, school sport and zone/regional carnivals. We have already gained some excellent results this year in swimming and more recently in the Port Stephens Zone Cross Country Carnival at Dungog, as our team of 15 students competed. Congratulations to the following students who were selected to compete: Year 7: Amelia Jenkinson, Dylan Maxted, Ashley Newton, Chelsea Raymond, Ben Smith, Jacob Tudball Year 8: Colby Ison, Evan Lake, Zac Perret Year 9: Eli Packham, Lachlan Scott Year 10: Luke Lawrence Year 11: Kayla Bazley Year 12: Caleb Carpenter, James Hunt Of this team of fifteen, eight of our students were successful in moving through to the Hunter Region Carnival which will be in Cessnock on June 1. The students representing our school and zone are: Amelia Jenkinson, Chelsea Raymond, Jacob Tudball, Eli Packham, Luke Lawrence, Kayla Bazley, Caleb Carpenter and James Hunt. Zone Athletics Carnival Following our school carnival, a team will be selected to compete at the Zone Carnival on May 24, 2018. The information for this will be handed out to students as we identify those who have achieved the standard to compete at the next level. Ski Trip At this stage, I have called for interest and a deposit to confirm sufficient numbers for our school ski trip. If there are any students in Year 9, 10 or 11 who wish to attend but have not expressed their interest, please see Miss Attwill as soon as possible. The trip requires a minimum number and at the moment, we are below this number. Any parents wanting further information are encouraged to call me at the school. Under 15 Girls Soccer In the last week of school last term, our Under 15 girls played against Maitland High School at Fieldsend Oval in East Maitland. The game was extremely close in the first half, with our girls holding the opposition out to 1-0. The students played with exceptional sportsmanship, always playing fairly and considerately to the other high school. In the end, Maitland were victorious as they scored a few more goals toward the latter stages of the half. This was the first time I had coached a school team for a few years and the commitment these girls showed, particularly to training after school was outstanding. For some players, it was their first experience playing football and I hope they enjoyed it enough to be involved again. Thank you to our dedicated parents who also came and watched the game. Jordan Lee, Leah Davidson, Alexis Leyshon, Amelia Jenkinson, Breahana Shelton, Emily Moore, Jenaya Griffiths, Emmy Blanch, Ash Duffield, Marlee Gray, Jam Mendoza, Indah Sukada, Mackenzie Whiting, Paris Wilson. ABORIGINAL EDUCATION This term our Aboriginal Education Committee will continue to provide cultural programs that were identified by parents and students at the end of last year. During term one a number of Year 9 and 10 students engaged in Language lessons, provided by Sharon Edgar-Jones from Murrook Cultural Centre. Our students and principal enjoyed these lessons and it provided our school with excellent knowledge and understanding as Sharon is a very experienced teacher of language. This term, we will be continuing the lessons fortnightly for our students and this has been made possible by the fundraising of the Junior AECG for the Easter raffle and a sausage sizzle they held in the last 2 weeks of school. Well done to the staff and students who assisted in this as our students will benefit greatly. A highlight of these lessons has seen Jenna Brown complete the Acknowledgement of Country in Wonnarua language at every Monday assembly, congratulations to Jenna who has been studying hard and absorbing the cultural experience with Sharon. Personalised Learning Plans This year our Aboriginal Education Committee will be case managing our students in order to have the PLP’s completed. This process has changed since last year, as previously we had parents or carers attend over the course of a week. We are wanting the staff who work closely with your students to be more involved in the process of setting goals and monitoring these goals as they are working with the students daily. Over the course of this term, you will be contacted by staff in this team and we can complete the process over the phone, or parents/carers can come into the school for an informal meeting in our cultural room. The whole process is to support our students, set realistic goals and ensure we are working together to provide educational opportunities for our students. Feedback is welcome on this and you can contact Miss Attwill if you wish to discuss. Harmonie Attwill Aboriginal Education Coordinator
CAPA Photography
What an outstanding achievement from our Photography and Digital Media students in such a short time frame this year. After entering 15 students into the 2018 Moran Photography Competition earlier in the year, we are pleased to announce that Aden Young (Year 9) has been selected as a Finalist in the nationally recognised competition and both James Hunt (Year 12) and Tayla Deville (Year 12) were selected as Semi-Finalists. The Moran had 1,953 student entries from schools all over Australia. Having three from Francis Greenway High School in the finals is an incredible accomplishment. To view the students works on the Moran website please visit: http://www.moranprizes.com.au/student-gallery.

Term Two Japanese studies will focus on Australian and Japanese Animals, Japanese Youth Culture and the Ainu People of Japan.
Japanese Drum Performance
Taiko means ‘fat drum’ in Japanese. On Tuesday March 20, FGHS students participated in a workshop by EZ Japanese Touring Company with Kiyomi Sensei. All students had the opportunity to be a Taiko drummer. They had to work as a team to drum in time with each other. A loud and enjoyable experience.

VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering is an activity you do of your own free will to meet genuine needs. Although you often learn new skills and knowledge, you receive no
payment or advantage for your efforts. Volunteering involves giving your own time to help others.
Many students see volunteering as 'doing good stuff', putting a smile on other people's faces and generally helping out. At FGHS we have a lot of students currently involved in volunteering activities. They are our Student Voice Team, Year 9 Peer Support students, Surf Life Savers, SES Volunteers and Wildlife Rescue Organisation Volunteers. Some students regularly perform duties at their local sporting clubs, visit aged care facilities or provide assistance to people with disabilities.
Students who volunteer may be suitable for inclusion in the NSW Premier's Student Volunteering Awards program. Attainment of these awards
enhance a student’s resume and formally recognise the service they are providing to the school and community.
If your child is involved in any of the above activities or another activity which you think may qualify as volunteering, please encourage them to
speak to Mrs Waller at school about registering their volunteer hours.
Alternatively, if you would like to speak with me, please call during school hours on 4964 1282.

WELLBEING TEAM Student Centred – Learning Focused – Wellbeing Driven Look Up Lunchtime
In Week Four of this term, on Wednesday May 23, the ‘Look Up Lunchtime’ wellbeing initiative will be launched at Francis Greenway High School. Every second Wednesday students will be offered a range of lunchtime activities to choose from to encourage them to 'look up' from their mobile phones, unplug from technology and social media and connect positively with their peers and staff. This project aims to build positive relationships, self-esteem and holistic health as well as decrease conflict that may arise in the playground due to boredom or social issues that stem from negative social media use. Activities may include recreation, sports, mindfulness/meditation, yoga, arts/crafts, a youth drop in, board games, cultural activities, boot camp, robotics, etc. Students will also be offered a healthy snack option as a treat to encourage positive nutritional practices. It is hoped that overall social and mental health, communication and interpersonal skills will improve as students are encouraged to 'look up' from their mobile phones and engage positively with their peers and staff. An increasing societal concern is that teens are 'plugged in' BUT 'tuned out' and that this has a major negative affect on mental health, so we are looking to provide opportunities for our students to connect with real people and the real world. The most recent Youth Mental Health report released by the Black Dog Institute reports that 1 in every 4 teens suffers with probable serious mental health concerns, with school stress, bullying (cyber) and body image all listed are major contributing factors. 'Look Up Lunchtime' aims to instill positive lifelong exercise, social and nutritional habits that can be sustained by students beyond the program. Wellbeing Wall
‘Winter Health’ – How to keep you and your children healthy during the winter months
Boost your diet Eating foods that are high in Vitamin C will help keep your immune system strong, so include fruit and vegetables such as lemons, kiwifruit, capsicum and broccoli in your weekly shop. If you're struggling to get the recommended two serves of fruit and five serves of vegies each day, try juicing them. Nutritionist Zoe Bingley-Pullin recommends making juices that consist of two-thirds vegetables and one-third fruit. Ensure your diet also includes plenty of lean meats, fish, poultry, low-fat dairy, legumes, wholegrains, nuts and seeds, and use lots of herbs and spices.
Exercise regularly It's vital to keep your workout regime up during winter, with a recent study showing that a moderate level of regular exercise has a long-term cumulative effect on immune response. Lead researcher Professor David Nieman from Appalachian State University in the US reported that study participants who went for a brisk walk several times a week reduced the number of sick days they took by about 40 per cent.
Stay connected Socialising helps strengthen your immune system by keeping you active and reducing your stress levels, so avoid the temptation to rug up on the couch all winter.
Scrub up Frequent hand washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness as it limits the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. This is important during winter when we tend to cough and sneeze more frequently. Wet your hands and lather up with soap for 20 seconds to help dislodge germs and rinse well under running water.
Sleep well Lack of sleep can have a serious effect on your immune system, making you more vulnerable to catching colds. A study from Brazil found lack of sleep can result in a substantial decrease in the white blood cells that help to fight infection in the body. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as listening to soft music or soaking in a warm bath. Avoid watching TV or using your computer just before bedtime and turn the lights down low an hour before you turn in for the night, as it will boost the release of melatonin in the brain. Also try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Local Events & Resources The following events /opportunities are available in the local area in the coming weeks. If you require more information please contact Natalie Conway for more information.

TEACHING and LEARNING In 2018 we have seen some exciting new programs and initiatives rolled out across Francis Greenway High School. Our teachers have been working hard to ensure that our students are receiving engaging, quality lessons which provide opportunities to develop a range of future focused skills. BYOD 2019 In 2019 FGHS will be relaunching our Bring Your Own Device Policy. This will focus on all students from Years 7 and 11 (2019) having access to their own device at school, allowing teachers greater opportunities to embed ICT skills into their lessons and provide opportunities for students to build competence across a range of online platforms. For Year 10 2018 students, additional information will be provided at our subject selection night (TBA). An information night for Year 6 students will take place in the Learning Hub on May 23, 2018, commencing at 5pm. Authentic Assessment Students across Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 are participating in our Authentic Assessment process in 2018. Authentic Assessment encourages students to reflect on their work and make real-world connections with the skills they have learnt in class. Students are reminded to take all completed assessment tasks to their LAW lessons, so that their Year Advisers can aid in the reflection process and provide support for the Authentic Assessment panels at the end of the year. NAPLAN 2018 Students in Year 7 and 9 will be taking part in NAPLAN Exams in Week 3. Best of luck to all students undertaking these examinations, who we know will be trying their best.
