Abigail Adams was one of the early believer of women’s rights and spoke about it out loud.

Believed women should have right to have power over their land if their husband died.

Abigail was the wife of John Adams and wrote letters to him about her beliefs that could be read on page 197 of your text book.

a. Wanted to supervise the upbringing of children and their education

Lydia Finny elected president of society

Wanted to redeem fallen women

1.Founded homes for poor women and prostitutes.

Went to brothels to sing and pray

Made seduction a crime in Massachusetts (1846) and New York (1848)

Wanted to improve public places such as schools and hospitals.

Wanted to prevent women from falling under evil influences

Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized meeting.

Gathered in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848

Used Abigail Adams ideas of property rights and that men and women are equal.

Said men are tyrants over women

70 women and 30 men attended

Most men who heard about this idea believed it was wrong

Congregational Clergymen said they had to stop speaking

Sarah turned to bible and proved that nowhere in bible does it say women can’t follow God’s duties and that men and women are created equal

Said that women were treated as domestic slaves
