keep the beat moving from beginning to end, with no fumbles. Therefore, a smooth left hand

technique must be developed. Of course, the right hand is also important if yourboogie isto havestyle and expression.Follow the technique tips and fingeringwhich follow for the boogie selections

in this book. Remember! Practice makes perfect,so start these exercises slowly,

gradually increasing speed when you canplay them smoothly. Do not use the pedals

when playing boogie woogie.

TECHNIQUE TIPS AND FINGERING-LEFT HAND FOR

FrankieAnd JohnnlJIn this example we have a boogie beat with a dotted

quaver/semiquaver pattern. In fact, the dotted quaverbecomes two thirds of a crotchet triplet andthe semiquaver becomes the remaining third.

You will see that all we are doing is playing itin a lazy manner which makes it more legato. This applies

to all the other examples in the folio. Remember-

TECHNIQUE TIPS AND FINGERING FOR

MightTrainHere we have a bouncing boogie pattern of intervals

of a fifth, sixth and seventh:-

Keeping the wrist loose, start slowly andgradually increase speed, making the staccatosbounce close to the keys. If the wrist becomes

tired, it means it is tightening up. Rest fora minute and start again, keeping it relaxed .

•TECHNIQU~ TIPS AND FINGERING FOR

Alright,OkalJ,YouWinHere we have a slightly different bass pattern,

but the same rules apply; namely a relaxedleft hand and a bounce close to the keys.

TECHNIQUE TIPS AND FINGERING FOR

BoogieBIJ CandlelightThis is played slowly in a blues style.

The main theme is played bythe left hand forthe first 12 bars. Play it firmly and let thenotes ring out. Starting at the 27th bar,

the bass line changes to the styleof'Night Train' and the same rules apply.

•The remaining titles have similar bass patterns

to those mentioned previously. At the end of the foliothere are three boogie workouts to be practised daily.

Spend 15 minutes a dayon these andsoon you'llbe able to call yourself an expert!
