Yes, last year we celebrated the centenary of the establishment of the movement in the UK in 1907. It took only 12 months for the idea to catch on down under and we have been at it since. Here in the Fraser group we have been in celebration mood since January with a wonderful Cuboree and in March with the centenary camp. 100 years of scouting did not just happen. Scouting has only survived because of the dedication of thousands of leaders and supporters over all those years both here in our group and throughout the country. Nothing has changed, we still rely on your support and your involvement to keep scouting alive and well. There is no other way to do it. For that reason I would like you all to consider offering to take up one or more of the following positions that are currently vacant in our group: President of the group Committee Group newsletter editor Publicity Officer Webmaster Joey Scout Section leader Cub Scout Parent roster Parent committee member These are all volunteer positions - we are not paid but the rewards are tremendous and all the effort is directed to helping your kids get the most out of scouts. Please get involved in your group - give me a call and we can discuss a job for you (6258 4622). No experience is necessary! Another job we can all perform is to pass on the word about our group to your friends, family and neighbours- we have plenty of room for more youth members! 100 years of scouting did not just happen. Scouting has only surv ived because of

the dedication of thousands of leaders and supporters over all those years both

here in our group and throughout the country. Nothing has changed, we still rely

job for you (6258 4622). No experience is necessary!

Another job we can all perform is to pass on the word about our group to your

Thanks

Group Activity - Centenary Camp

A small but enthusiastic contingent of Cubs (Amy, Lawrence and Darzee) joined

the Scouts for a fantastic weekend in March. Jaiden arrived in time to enjoy

orienteering, where the Cubs conquered the course along with their friends from

Cuboree – Kambah Cubs and their leader, Kotik. The Cubs earned part of their

cooking badge when they prepared lunch for themselves, the Scouts, leaders

and parents (20 in total). Well done Cubs! Meanwhile the Scouts were taking

things at a slower pace, enjoying a well deserved rest after establishing the

campsite in a prime position on the hill. The Thomas Edison award goes to Luke

who made sure that on Saturday night our campsite stood out like a beacon,

putting the other sites to shame!

Sunday morning brought a huge surprise

when we saw the Airforce hot-air balloon

being inflated while enjoying the smell of

breakfast cooking. Everyone had the

chance for an exciting tethered flight with

great views of our campsite and the

surrounding hillsides and valleys. The

afternoon was spent canoeing, kayaking

and swimming down at Casuarina Sands

where we also all enjoyed a soft drink and an

ice-cream. Closing parade was held by the

river and the Scouts, Cubs and parents

headed home, happy and exhausted.

Membership incentive scheme!

At the last meeting of the FSG Committee it was

agreed to trial an incentive scheme in an effort to

boost numbers in both our Cub and Scout sections. The scheme provides for a 50% rebate on the

following year’s Group fee for any Cub or Scout who

brings in a new member (ie someone who joins and

pays their fees). Contact the Treasurer for more

details.

Cubs Activity - Lake Tuggeranong Sea Scout Challenge

Lawrence, Amy and Chris with

Darzee, Greg (our Group Leader)

and two parents experienced a

once in a lifetime opportunity to

enjoy an activity next to the

Centenary of Scouting flowerbed

on Northbourne Avenue. At the

same time we were able to show

the community that Scouting is so

much fun. We set up the

Australian and Fraser Scout Group

flags and after saluting them we

had a great time painting hiking

sticks. Some of the travellers

passing by waved and tooted and we took many photos before saluting the flags

again, packing up and heading off to a much enjoyed ice-cream!

Cubs Activity - Harmony Day

At the end of March eight Cubs

plus parents and leaders met at

Fraser Primary School to take part

in an activity to help the local

community. They cleaned up the

flowerbeds, car park and Pre-

school areas of the school and also

a large part of the oval. At the

same time the cubs learned about

recycling, safety, and taking care

of our environment. 15 bags of

rubbish were collected! Well done

to all and thanks for the great

effort in participating. Fraser Primary included a special thanks

for a job well done and much appreciated in their regular newsletter! Thank you,

also to Elena for taking the rubbish home for sorting and recycling.

Fundraising A big thank you to all parents who have been helping to sell fundraising

chocolates. So far this year we are doing extremely well, already on to our third

order. We are always looking for more people willing to help so if you would like

to have a go then let the Treasurer know via email to [email protected].

In other fundraising news, Fraser Scout Group

has managed to secure the delivery rights for

Yellow Pages “Yellow In The Car” glovebox

directories for Fraser, Flynn, Dunlop and Hall.

This is an excellent opportunity for the group

and we will be looking for some parents to lend

a helping hand (or trailer!). Stay tuned for

further details.

Cuboree 2008 A report on Cuboree was presented in the last newsletter but the experience

continues to be a buzz for our agents of change Cubs: Amy, Jaiden, Lawrence,

and Max. Here is an acrostic poem from Jaiden and a poster put together by

Lawrence and Amy. A CD-ROM with photos from Cuboree should be available

sometime soon.
