TORONTO (Canadian Press)

Nagging doubt about the precipitous state of the U.S. economy abruptly turned to fear yesterday as investors scrambled for the exits amid the prospect of a serious downturn.

The S&P/TSX composite index plunged 436 points to 12,380, its biggest one-day decline since late June 2009. South of the border, the Dow Jones industrial average took the brunt of the blow, falling 512 points to 11,383 – its biggest fall in nearly three years.

Oil dropped by more than $5 a barrel, helping to carve nearly two full cents off the value of the Canadian dollar – it closed 1.8 cents lower at 102.09 cents US.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial index lost tens of billions of dollars of value and wiped out the market’s gains for 2011.

“We are continuing to be bombarded by worries about the global economy,” said Bill Stone, chief investment strategist at PNC Financial, a big U.S. money manager.

Experts will be looking for signs of life today amid a fresh crop of U.S. economic numbers, including a payrolls report that economists expect to indicate something in the neighbourhood of 75,000 jobs cre-ated last month.

Province.Domestic violence | About 250 people attended a vigil on Wednesday for Ravinder Bhangu, who was brutally slain in a newspaper offi ce in Surrey. Her husband, 26-year-old Manmeet Singh has been charged with fi rst-degree murder.

Secession —

ALEX BROWNE (Peace Arch News)

The idea of amalgamating South Surrey with White Rock – championed by some in the early 1990s – is get-ting support from a White Rock councillor.

Coun. Grant Meyer says amalgamating what has always been an emotionally unifi ed Semiahmoo Pen-insula community makes sense, but would have to be driven by South Surrey residents.

“If people from Ocean Park and Crescent Beach wanted to be part of White Rock, I wouldn’t be opposed to it. But it would have to come from them.”

Meyer noted the original plan for the secession of Ward 7 from Surrey in 1957 included not just White Rock, but also Ocean Park and Crescent Beach.

Acknowledging the conventional wisdom in recent

years has been that it would make more sense to amal-gamate White Rock back into Surrey, Meyer said the opposite is worthy of further study.

“I think it could be the way to go in the future,” he said. “People who live in South Surrey have always con-sidered themselves part of White Rock. It would create a better tax base for White Rock, but geographically this area has always felt more like one community.”

Meyer recognizes however that Surrey is not likely to relinquish South Surrey without a gargantuan battle.

“Surrey would defi nitely be against it,” he said. “It would probably have to come through the province. It would take all the people of the Surrey side of the Peninsula to get together and make it an issue.”

KRISTI PATTON (Penticton Western News)

David Wesley Bobbitt appeared at the Penticton courthouse yesterday on the charge of attempted murder after a tip from an orchardist just south of Oliver helped police fi nd the man who had been on the run for four days. Bobbitt is accused of severely beating a 22-year-old woman and confi ning her to a bed for over 10 hours at a second-hand store on Ellis Street in Penticton. All this while her 22-month-old son sat nearby.

Dressed in an orange jumpsuit and sporting a shaved head, Bob-bitt smiled at the throng of media cameras as he was brought into court by sheriffs. During court, Bobbitt was mouthing words to the courtroom fi lled with the victim’s family and friends. Unable to contain himself, the father of the victim’s son stood up and yelled obscenities at Bobbitt. The accused quickly snapped back “keep threatening me you (exple-tive),” before he was grabbed by the sheriff and put back in the courthouse lockup. Outside, the intense exchange continued as sheriffs took Bobbitt to his transport vehicle. The father of the victim’s son charged the chain

link fence and Bobbitt yelled out “I’ll get you later.”

A publication ban has been ordered and both defence council Robert Maxwell and Crown counsel John Swanson agreed that Bobbitt will remain in custody and have a 30-day psychiatric assessment.

Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said Bobbitt was arrested without incident on Wednesday as he walked along Highway 97 near Osoyoos. An

orchardist just south of Oliver had noted an individual setting up camp on his property. The orchard-ist approached the individual and had him leave his property. Fol-lowing the conversation between the two, the orchardist watched Bobbitt leave and then realized it was the person that RCMP had been looking for. He then called police, who caught up with Bobbitt shortly afterward.

The men are of Paki-stani descent and are carrying valid passports, but didn’t have permission to leave the ship. The men were reported missing early Wednesday morning and Canada Border Service Agency issued the warrants later that day.

NEIGHBOUR SAVES WOMEN FROM BLAZESURREY LEADER (Black Press)An alert neighbour is being cited for potentially saving the lives of two Surrey women who were in a home when someone set it ablaze. At about 9 p.m. Wednesday, a home in Fleetwood was set on fi re. The family who lived upstairs was not at home, but two women, who witnesses say were both deaf, were in the basement. Police say a neighbour saw the blaze and was able to rescue the women. Surrey RCMP Drew Grainger said the police have a suspect and that he is in custody on another charge.

COMOX VALLEY RECORD (Black Press) For the second time in as many weeks, Cumberland council has voted against holding The Big Time Out at Village Park. In a 2-2 vote at a special meeting to recon-sider a revised application from Cumberland Village Works, council defeated a motion by Coun. Kate Greening to proceed with the Aug. 12 and 13 music festival at its usual location near the downtown core. The festival will be held this year at a farm in nearby Royston.

OTTAWA (Torstar)

This year’s federal election was a fi nancial windfall for all the political parties in the House of Commons, but especially the NDP, whose “orange surge” at the polls was matched by a green surge of cash donations.

The New Democrats, who became the offi cial Oppo-sition in the May 2 election, raised $3.1 million in the second quarter of this year, just a little less than the $3.6 million raised by the Liberals, who fell to third-party status for their fi rst time in their party’s history.

And the bonanza continues, according to NDP spokesman Karl Belanger.

“The NDP has brought in more money in the fi rst six months of 2011 than we did in all of 2010,”

Belanger said.Elections Canada posted

the offi cial fundraising reports from all parties-this week, for the period covering April to June this year, which included

much of the federal election campaign. In the fall of 2008, when the last federal election

was held, only about $627,000 came to the NDP from donations greater than $200. The total number of contributors was 17,945.

This year, the NDP raised nearly $1.6 million from donations more than $200 and the ranks of its con-tributors swelled to 22,809.

The Conservatives raised $8.2 million from April to June this year, compared to $6.3 million raised in the fall of 2008.

A total of 52,805 people handed over money to the Conservatives from April to June this year.

Hundreds of Environment Can-ada employees facing job cuts will have to wait up to three months before they know what is in store for them.

The Union of Environment Workers says the department plans to eliminate 776 positions as part of a government-wide initiative to cut costs.

The union’s national president, Bill Pynn, says Environment Canada has 90 days to offer some workers new jobs or move them to another department or agency.

After that, he says some work-ers who aren’t moved could get pink slips. The cuts affect workers across the department – includ-ing those working on air-quality research, which Environment Canada says is a priority.

The department did not imme-diately respond to questions about the cuts.

damage as spilled oil seeps into its drinking water, destroys plants and remains in the ground for decades at a time, a UN report said yesterday.

Phones, Internet, electricity cut in brutal crackdown —

BEIRUT (Associated Press)

Syrian authorities kept the restive city of Hama under a blackout yesterday, cutting phone lines, Internet and electricity as part of a brutal, fi ve-day-old crackdown on anti-government dissent. Activists expressed concern about worsening humanitarian conditions there, saying medical supplies and bread were in short supply even before the latest siege.

Security forces killed at least seven protesters in other parts of Syria overnight when they went out to demonstrate after special nighttime prayers for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan,

activists said. Hozan Ibrahim, of the Local Coordination Committees that track the crackdown, said up to 30 people may have been killed in Hama on Wednesday based on reports from fl eeing residents. But the reports could not be

immediately verifi ed.Phones and Internet in Hama have been cut or

severely hampered for at least two days. Electricity has been out or sporadic since Sunday. Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the London-based Observatory for Human Rights, said some 1,000 families have fl ed Hama in the past two days, most of them to the village of Mashtal Hilu west of Hama and al-Salamieh to the east.

The siege of Hama is part of a new government offensive to put down the country’s uprising against President Bashar Assad’s authoritarian rule. Now in its fi fth month, the protests have been gaining momentum in defi ance of the military crackdown.

Assad has sought to deal with the extraordinary revolt against his family’s 40-year-dynasty through deadly force, but has also acknowledged the need for reform.

He issued two legislative decrees yesterday that will allow the formation of political parties alongside the Baath Party and enable newly formed parties to run for parliament and local councils. Both draft bills were endorsed by cabinet last month, and were key demands of the opposition movement. But opposi-tion fi gures now dismiss the moves as manoeuvring tactics and insist they want regime change.

Activists said authorities have effectively imposed a news blackout on the city by cutting cellular and

land lines and Internet after reports of at least 100 killed in the fi rst four days of the govern-ment offensive.

LONDON (Associated Press)

CNN’s star interviewer Piers Morgan, a former tabloid newspaper editor, faced calls yesterday to return to Britain to explain what he knows about the country’s phone hacking scandal – though a key Parliamentary committee said it won’t formally demand that he testify.

Heather Mills, ex-wife of Paul McCart-ney, on Wednesday accused newspaper group Trinity Mirror PLC of accessing her voicemail messages in 2001.

Mills told the BBC that a senior Trinity Mirror journalist – though not Morgan – had acknowledged that her voicemail had been accessed and quoted to her a message left by McCartney after the couple had argued. She has not disclosed which of the group’s papers she alleges carried out the hacking.

Morgan edited the tabloid, the Daily Mir-ror, between 1995 and 2004, and has denied any involvement in phone hacking.

However, Morgan’s opponents point to a 2006 article in which he claims to be have been played a tape of a message McCartney had left on Mills’ cellphone. “He sounded lonely, miserable and desperate, and even sang We Can Work It Out into the answer-phone,” Morgan wrote in the Daily Mail.

HAMA BLACKED OUT IN MILITARY SIEGE

ASSOCIATED PRESS

OSLO, Norway (AP)A Norwegian prosecutor said yesterday he is concerned that the confessed perpetrator of last month’s attacks that killed 77 people is declining to give information that could determine if he had accomplices. Anders Behring Breivik has confessed to the July 22 shooting massacre at a youth camp conducted by the governing party, in which 69 people died, and the car bombing hours earlier in Oslo that killed eight.“We still think he was alone, but we cannot conclude about that. He holds back some information, and that wor-ries us,” prosecutor Christian Hatlo said.

The deal would allow the Senate to approve a House bill extend-ing the FAA’s operating authority through mid-September, including a provision that eliminates $16.5 million in air service subsidies to 13 rural communities. A vote on the bill is expected today.

WASHINGTON (Associated Press)

President Barack Obama celebrated his 50th birthday yesterday just days after reaching a deal with Republicans to avert a calamitous government default.

While the mood around the White House hasn’t exactly been festive since the deal was reached – Obama didn’t get much of what he wanted – there was plenty of cel-ebration for the milestone.

Senior members of Obama’s staff toasted the president in the Blue Room yesterday afternoon, and last night he celebrated with family and friends, including some coming in from Chicago. He planned to cap the festivities with a trip to Camp David.

For the sake of his re-election campaign, the celebrations started early. He headlined birthday-themed fundraisers in Chicago Wednesday to rake in money for his cam-paign and spoke via video to supporters holding their own birthday events.

First lady Michelle Obama used her hus-band’s birthday as an opportunity to poke fun at his greying hair and rally support for his re-election in an email yesterday.

“I see Barack make choices he knows will affect every American family. That’s no small task for anyone – and more proof that he’s earning every last one of those grey hairs,” Mrs. Obama wrote.

Virginia Tech was locked down yesterday when three children attending a summer camp said they saw a man holding what looked like a gun on the cam-pus where a 2007 massacre left 33 people dead.

The university issued an alert on its website at 9:37 a.m. local time. Thursday telling students and employees to stay inside and lock their doors. Uni-

versity spokesman Larry Hincker said during a news conference later in the morning that the campus alert remained in effect and that people should stay indoors until further notice.

The university posted the alert on its website and its offi cial Twitter account. The Roanoke Times also reported

that the university sounded its emergency sirens and issued an emergency alert by phone and email.

The campus-wide alert was later lifted and students and staff were told to resume their normal activities, according to an email sent at 2:42 p.m. The email said there would be a large police presence on campus throughout the day.

The school posted an update on its website around 1 p.m., saying authorities were combing through buildings on campus.

Classes were cancelled for the day, and the school said searching the buildings would be a long pro-

cess. A composite sketch was posted on the school’s website.

People on campus were told to remain indoors. The children told police they saw the man quickly

walking toward the volleyball courts, carrying what might have been a handgun covered by some type of cloth. State and local police swarmed the area but said they could not fi nd a gunman matching their description.

An alert on the school’s website said the gunman was reported near Dietrick Hall, a three-story dining facility steps away from the dorm where the fi rst shootings took place in the 2007 rampage. A student from South

Korea, Seung-Hui Cho, killed 30 more students and faculty and himself. It was the deadliest mass

shooting in modern U.S. history.

Students and staff at Virginia Tech were ordered indoors for six hours yesterday while police investigated a report of a man with a gun on campus.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar is keeping busy while on hiatus from his Franklin & Bash dramedy by trekking across the East Coast on a motorcycle ride for charity.

Skin care company Kiehl’s six-day LifeRide for amfAR raises money for AIDS research. The former star of Saved by the Bell is participating in the last three days of the ride – from Boston to New York City.

For Gosselaar, an avid motorcyclist, the event was a no-brainer.

“Setting a good example for my kids and leading by example is very important to me,” said the father of two.

His love of motorcycles started young with his older brother Mike teaching him to ride. Gosselaar was competing in moto-cross races by the time he was fi ve.

The actor said that he’s passed the pas-sion onto his children, Michael and Ava.

“My son was riding by the time he was fi ve,” said Gosselaar. “I have pictures of me with him in a BabyBjorn, and I’m on my motorcycle, and that’s the way that he would go to sleep. I’d ride around on my property at fi ve miles an hour, but it was the noise and the wind that would put him to sleep.”

Mad Men has gone beyond a fashion fad. The AMC show about a 1960s ad agency – in which style is as important as the characters and plot – continues to infl uence runways and retailers with a branded col-lection debuting next week at Banana Republic.

Movies and TV are not uncommon inspiration for fashion designers – especially when it’s a highly styl-ized look. Vera Wang had her Deadwood collection, Anna Sui mined Doctor Dolittle and Tommy Hilfi ger has tapped The Royal Tenen-baums more than once, but the infl u-ence of Mad Men has had a straight run for more than four years, reintroduc-ing the masses to skinny ties, pocket squares and body-hugging dresses.

The new clothing line also provides a fi x for devotees awaiting the show’s return in 2012. No new episodes aired this year.

The clothes are sexy, and Joanna Coles, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, says that’s one of the things that really has resonated with viewers. The show gives us permission to dress to impress the opposite sex – and in fact encourages it, she observes.

“Mad Men shows you how to look great in the work-place, and it shows you how to work it,” Coles says.

It’s the rare TV show that glamorizes the offi ce and fi lls it with attractive people, she says. “When you look at something like The Offi ce, no male executive wants to recreate the style of Steve Carell. No one

wears lipstick at Dunder Miffl in. Mad Men makes the offi ce a more exciting place than it often is, and Banana Republic is trying to chan-nel that.”

Madison Avenue during that era was practically a catwalk with men in three-piece suits and fedoras, and women in sheaths and high-heel pumps.

It’s a good look – and one that people look good in, says Simon Kneen, creative director for Banana Republic. “It’s about good tailoring, it’s bon ton, and a little more buttoned up and polished.”

LONDON (Associated Press)

Punk rockers once wanted to smash the state. Now they’re helping preserve stately homes.

The National Trust charity, which oversees Britain’s castles and historic houses, has released a fundraising album of punk classics.

Never Mind the Dovecotes includes tracks by the Sex Pistols and other vintage noise merchants, including GBH, Siouxsie and the Banshees and X-Ray Spex.

It means Mod band The Jam will sit alongside jars of jam in gift shops at the Trust’s 300 properties, which range from Roman-era structures like Hadrian’s Wall to ruined abbeys, medieval castles, grand country mansions and Victorian pubs.

The album is a change from previous efforts such as Celtic Collection, Classic Voices and Land of Hope and Glory – Great Songs from the British Isles.

But the Trust’s brand licensing manager, Phillippa Green, said yesterday that the album makes sense. She says people who were teenagers in punk’s late-’70s heyday are now middle aged and enjoy “outings with their children and families at parks, beaches and historic houses.”

TORONTO (Canadian Press)

With a vast catalogue of chart-topping songs, Barry Manilow could be forgiven for milking his well-worn hits into retirement.

Instead, the 68-year-old legend has reinvented his sound, injecting his trademark piano pop with guitar-laced rock.

“To be safe is to be dead,” the Copacabana singer said.

“I needed to scare myself, I needed to do something that took me out of my safety zone. And this album did it.”

That album is the guitar-driven 15 Minutes, Manilow’s fi rst col-lection of original material in a decade. It’s received strong reviews and made an impressive June debut at No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard album chart.

In recent years, the singer, who broke out in the 1970s with infec-tious hits such as Mandy, Looks Like We Made It and Can’t Smile Without You has found success with a series of cover albums.

And while he says it’s been an honour to record songs by the likes of Burt Bacharach and George Gershwin, the man who famously

crooned about writing songs that “make the whole world sing” missed composing his own tunes.

“I’m a creator. We creators are crazy,” said Manilow, who will play Toronto’s BlackCreek music festi-val on Aug. 24 and Caesars Windsor in Windsor, Ont., on Aug. 28. “Over the last eight years, I’ve had these very successful cover albums. ...

But I really did miss songwriting.”15 Minutes, an album ruminat-

ing on the perils of fame, was a risk on several levels, he said.

“It was an album that had a story to it, that’s No. 1 – that’s kind of different. It was an album that was about a young guy in my imagina-tion ... and he wanted to be suc-cessful and I thought he would be a guitar player. Well, I don’t play the guitar, so writing a whole album for guitar, that was another risk. ... And then releasing it on my own label, that was another risk.

“I was out of my safety zone all the way (and) it turned out to be a wonderful experience as a creator.”

The idea for 15 Minutes came a few years back when Manilow and lyricist Enoch Anderson became pre-occupied with the tabloid troubles of Britney Spears.

“She couldn’t even go to Star-bucks by herself. ... She couldn’t even walk out of her house,” recalled Manilow.

“(Enoch) and I said “Wow, is that the price of fame now? Is that what’s going on out there? It just began to emerge as an interesting thing to write about.”

OSHAWA, Ont. (Canadian Press)

General Motors announced yesterday that it will invest $117 million to prepare its assembly plant in Oshawa, Ont., to build the new Cadillac XTS next year.

The automaker said that the move will cre-ate or save 400 jobs on the fl exible assembly line in Oshawa, site of the company’s Cana-dian headquarters and main car-making operations.

The Oshawa assem-bly plant has had major changes in the last year, with new vehicle mod-els and expanded production that has added two new shifts and 1,300 jobs.

The Oshawa plant builds many GM models – from the Impala and Camaro to the Chevrolet Equinox and Buick Regal – and employs more than 4,500 people.

“Adding the Cadillac XTS affi rms GM’s commit-ment to a strong manufacturing base in Canada, ensuring Oshawa will have a critical role in the ongo-

ing transformation of Cadillac,” GM Canada

president and managing director Kevin Williams

said in a release. The Cadillac XTS is being

designed to compete against other luxury car brands, a highly

competitive market. Production is planned to start in the fi rst half of 2012.

The GM announcement “delighted” Canadian Auto Workers president Ken Lewenza, although he was less certain it would add jobs at the plant east of Toronto in the short term.

“I would certainly like to raise the expectation that it will create jobs, but it will really depend on the market,” Lewenza said.

“The reality is the investment will obviously provide the necessary capital to make

the Oshawa facility fl exible for the new product,” Lewenza said.

But in terms of the overall job-creation mechanism, he said that when a new vehicle is introduced these days “more days than not it’s to replace another and your objective is to increase the (sales) volume,” he said.

IMF CHIEF’S ROLE IN $400M ARBITRATION TO BE PROBEDPARIS (Associated Press)A French court yesterday ordered an investigation into new IMF chief Christine Lagarde’s role in a much-criticized $400 million arbitration deal in favour of a controversial tycoon.Lagarde was France’s fi nance minister when magnate Bernard Tapie won a settlement in 2008 with a French state-owned bank over the mishandled sale of sportswear maker Adidas in the 1990s.A commission at France’s Court of Justice of the Repub-lic decided Thursday that an investigation should be launched into Lagarde’s role in the arbitration deal.A senior prosecutor had requested an investigation in May, saying he suspected Lagarde overstepped her authority in allowing the arbitration to go forward.

TORONTO (Canadian Press) Langley third baseman Brett Lawrie will soon make his long-awaited debut with the Toronto Blue Jays. The team selected his contract from triple-A Las Vegas shortly after the Jays dropped a 7-6, 12-inning decision to the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday afternoon.“We wanted to fi nd out about Brett Lawrie sooner rather than later,” general manager Alex Anthopoulos said on a conference call. “We wanted to get him some August at-bats to get a little bit more of a read on him so he deserved to be up here.”Lawrie’s arrival bumps all-star slugger Jose Bautista back to right fi eld where he started the season. That left outfi elder Travis Snider as the odd man out and he was sent back down to the triple-A club.“It was not an easy decision to make,” said Anthopoulos. “It really came down to (rookie right-fi elder) Eric Thames and Travis. (Manager John Farrell) and I talked about it at length and player performance is really what it came down to.”Lawrie, a 21-year-old native of Langley, B.C., has hit .353 for Las Vegas this season with 18 home runs and 61 RBIs. The top prospect was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers last December in the Shaun Marcum trade.“We try to put these players in the best position to have success when they come up here,” said Anthopoulos. “You know you’re not going to be 100 per cent sure. Like I always say, the likelihood with all young players is that they’re probably going to have to go back down, but at least you want to do the best you can developmentally to prepare them for being up here.“Hopefully now with Brett he can be up here to stay for the entire year.”

VANCOUVER (Canadian Press) The Vancouver Canucks have signed forwards Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk to professional tryout contracts, the NHL team said yesterday.Nolan, 39, has played 1,200 career NHL games, recording 885 points from 422 goals and 463 assists, plus 1,793 penalty minutes. The six-foot-one, 205-pound right-winger has played for seven teams and spent the 2010-11 season with Zurich of the Swiss League, where he scored seven goals and added 19 assists in 24 games.A native of Belfast, Ireland, Nolan was picked fi rst overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1990 draft.Fedoruk, 32, has 97 points (32-65) and 1,050 penalty minutes in 545 NHL games. Dahrran Diedrick and the Montreal Alouettes breathed a huge sigh of relief last night.

Diedrick scored three rushing TDs in his home town while Anthony Calvillo broke the all-time CFL completions record as Montreal defeated the Toronto Argonauts 36-23 for its fi rst win in three games.

“It’s good to come home and score some touch-downs but it’s even better to go out and get a win after two losses,” the Toronto native said. “We hadn’t lost two games in a row since 2008 so we knew we needed to go out there and get a win.

“It was a must-win for us and that’s what we talked about. Everybody thought we had to go out there and do as much as we could individually to get us a team win.”

Calvillo certainly did his part before a Rogers Centre gathering generously announced at 19,204 with the roof open on a brilliant summer night. After two straight games of completing just 50 per cent of his passes, the 18-year veteran showed pinpoint accuracy against Toronto, completing 30-of-36 passes for 349 yards and a touchdown with no

interceptions.“Calvillo felt comfortable all night,” said Argos

head coach Jim Barker. “We didn’t have a better plan against him.”

Calvillo wasted little time making Damon Allen’s completions mark his own, surpassing Allen’s record of 5,158 by starting the contest completing nine of his fi rst 10 passes. Earlier this season, Calvillo broke Allen’s all-time mark of 394 career TD passes.

Predictably, the victory meant more to Calvillo than the record.

“Whether it’s my second or 10th year, to me the key is to be consistent,” he said. “Bouncing back from the last couple weeks is what you want to do as a professional.

“This is part of our journey, this is the sixth week of a lot more games to come.”

Brandon Whitaker led the way for Mon-treal with 150 yards rushing on 19 carries

while Diedrick only had 12 yards on fi ve carries, but three were for TDs.

“What’s great for us is we had the running game going,” Calvillo said. “We handed the ball off a lot, picked up a lot of fi rst downs on second and medium and that goes a long way for us.”

Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said defensive tackle Mike Patter-son has a brain condition that may require surgery.

Burkholder said yesterday morn-ing that Patterson is undergoing fur-ther tests. The 28-year-old Patterson was hospitalized after suffering a seizure Wednesday morning at train-ing camp at Lehigh University.

“In medicine today, there’s tons of options,” Burkholder said. “Every-body wants to jump right into sur-gery and I’m not saying for this particular case, I’m saying with every-thing, but there’s so many other avenues out there. It would be foolish to speculate what’s going to happen to Mike.”

Patterson has been diagnosed with arterio-venous malformation, which is the tangling of blood vessels near the skull.

“We’re pretty sure it’s what caused the seizure and we’re pretty sure it’s not football related,” Burkholder

said. “It just so happened at football practice. It could’ve happened any-where.”

The trainer said Patterson is on medica-tion to prevent another seizure.

It’s unknown when or if Patterson will return to the Eagles.

On Wednesday, Pat-terson dropped to the ground between drills and began shaking. He

was tended to by Burk-holder and his staff, with assistance from rookie Danny Watkins, a fi re-fi ghter, and taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital.

World.Haiti | Tropical Storm Emily caused fl ooding and damaged hundreds of homes in

Haiti yesterday as hundreds of thousands of vulnerable earthquake victims waited nervously in fl imsy shanties and tents for the full brunt of the storm.

WELLINGTON (Associated Press)

Happy Feet is now a creature of the Internet age.

The wayward emperor penguin, discovered on a New Zealand beach six weeks ago, will soon be returned to the wild – but not before he picked up an online fol-lowing of more than 120,000.

That’s how many unique visi-tors have logged onto a Web cam-era monitoring his every move. Thousands more are expected to follow the updates after he’s released in coming weeks, with feeds from a GPS tracker attached to his back posted online.

And then there’s the chatter on social networking sites like Face-book and Twitter.

His followers don’t seem both-ered that Happy Feet, nicknamed after the 2006 animated movie, does little more than eat, sleep and occasionally waddle.

“At 11:20 p.m. in New Zealand, Happy Feet was sound asleep with his left foot and fl ipper sticking out,” one Facebook fan wrote. “Five minutes later, he pulled in his left foot and fl ipper and just got up! :)”

The penguin was found June 20 on Peka Peka Beach, about 65 kilo-

metres northwest of Wellington and far from his Antarctic feeding grounds. He was moved four days later to the Wellington Zoo after becoming ill from eating sand, which he likely mistook for snow.

He has since gained weight and been given a clean bill of health to return to the ocean.

His unusual journey captured worldwide interest, with local TV3 station setting up a webcam on June 30 in his small, ice-fi lled

room at the zoo.The phone calls began coming in

soon after, even prompting the zoo one night to send a veterinarian to check on the penguin after the station was swamped by worried callers convinced Happy Feet had died, zoo spokeswoman Kate Baker said. It turned out the penguin was sleeping.

The zoo raised $10,000 through a public campaign to cover the costs of housing Happy Feet, Baker said. It has also raised about $8,000 so far for returning him to the sub-Antarctic ocean south of New Zealand – a trip that could cost up to $30,000.

NAIROBI, Kenya (Associated Press)The drought and famine in Somalia have killed more than 29,000 children under the age of 5, according to U.S. estimates, the fi rst time such a precise death toll has been released related to the Horn of Africa crisis. The United Nations has said previously that tens of thousands of people have died in the drought, the worst in Somalia in 60 years. The UN says 640,000 Somali children are acutely malnourished, a statistic that sug-gests the death toll of small children will rise.Nancy Lindborg, an offi cial with the U.S. government aid arm, told a congressional committee in Washington on Wednesday that the U.S. estimates that more than 29,000 children under the age of 5 have died in the last 90 days in southern Somalia. That number is based on nutrition and mortality surveys verifi ed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The UN on Wednesday declared three new regions in Somalia famine zones, bringing the total number to fi ve. Out of a population of roughly 7.5 million, the UN says 3.2 million Somalis are in need of immediate lifesaving assistance.
