Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,  

Welcome to the last newsle er for the 2019 academic year.  The conclusion of another year is reached and it is  me to celebrate the birth of Christ.  In the spirit of Christmas, I wish you, along with all staff, a most blessed, safe, reinvigora ng and happy  me together with friends and family.   

WE ARE COMPANIONS ON THE JOURNEY  

Earlier this term I was on a trip travelling to Adelaide for a conference.  While I was on board the plane, I looked around the cabin and saw all the people who were travelling to the same city as I was.  I realised I did not know them, nor did they know me.  Yet here we were in close proximity for a few hours.  Yes, I had casual gree ngs with some and small conversa ons  with others.  But in reality, we were completely disinterested in each other’s welfare.  Here we were, travelling physically close to each other, and yet we remained worlds apart in reality.  We were not ‘companions’ on the journey but mere commuters crowded together for a  temporarily mutual goal – to reach our city of des na on.  

Soon we will be celebra ng the great feast of Christmas, the anniversary of our new beginning in salva on history, when God became human in Christ.  We will celebrate the birth of Christ and the beginning of a new way of travelling through life.  It affords the opportunity for us to recognise that we are no longer commuters going through life, disinterested in each other’s welfare.  Instead we are co‐pilgrims and companions on the journey of life.  We are different people from many cultural backgrounds with different languages and customs travelling  at different ‘speeds’, but we are all travelling to the same God.  We are not just commuters  travelling together with a common goal of returning to God, but we are companions on that journey who care for each other as we travel.  In God becoming one of us we have a new  purpose to journey through life.  We know now that our journey is a pilgrimage to see God.  We know that we are companions on that journey together.

As such, Christmas is a  me to celebrate our common purpose, to be companions on this journey of life and is a reminder that Christ became one of us, as the companion for our collec ve journey.  So then, what must we do to be good companions on this journey?  

While it wouldn’t harm commuters in airplanes to be more social and courteous to one another, if we are to be companions on the journey of life it has to be about more than just sociability, courtesy and manners, though these things are important.  We need to care about each other in a much deeper way as we travel through this life together.  True companions concern themselves with other people for the sake of the welfare of the other person, ensuring that others have what they need for life.  The root meaning of ‘companion’ is to ‘break bread with’. It has to do with being ‘one with’ the other person.  Christmas affords us with the opportunity to think of, pray for and be generous to others who share this same journey of life.  

As a learning and faith sharing community, centred in Christ may we celebrate Christmas in a unique way this year by being not just commut‐ers with each other but true companions on our journey of life.  

STAFF MOVEMENTS  

At this  me of the year there is always movement of staff.  This year is no excep on with a number of staff deciding to leave our community for varying reasons.   

Mr Craig Preshaw has been at the College for 16 years in the capacity as a teacher which has included the role of Director of Sport ‐ a tenure which concluded last year.  On behalf of the Frayne community, past and present, we thank Craig for his contribu ons and extend to him our best wishes as he con nues his professional journey at Aranmore Catholic College.  

It is with mixed feelings that I inform the College community of the impending re rement of Mrs Sharon Rossbach a er 14 years of dedicat‐ed service to the College.  We thank Sharon for her outstanding commitment to our students during her tenure and wish her well as she  embarks on the next exci ng phase of her life journey.  

Also, a er a year of leave, Mr Jason Carlier (Humani es and Social Sciences) will also conclude his tenure at the College a er 12 years of  service as a teacher to pursue other opportuni es.  We thank Jason for his contribu ons and extend to him and his family our prayerful best wishes.  

I also wish to farewell the following resigning members of staff with our thanks, gra tude and best wishes: Miss Keziah Bin Sali (Aboriginal Teaching Assistant); Mr John Cumpsty (Mathema cs); Mrs Maggie Leak (Execu ve Assistant – Balmoral Street); Mrs Genevieve Moran (Drama – Balmoral Street); Mrs Kana Nobata (Languages); Miss Alison Purvis (Year 4) and Mr Simon Schmidberger (Science).  We thank them for their years of dedicated service to our College and wish them well for their future endeavours.  

We also thank the following staff who will be finishing their contracts of employment next week: Mrs Karen Cassidy (Ac ng Learning Area  Co‐ordinator: The Arts); Miss Joanna Creighton (Student Services – Duncan Street); Mr James Elder (Humani es and Social Sciences) and  Mrs Sendra Jugov (Psychologist).  May these staff go in peace knowing that we are very thankful for their contribu ons to our learning and faith sharing community, ‘centred in Christ’.  

Thank you to Mrs Karen Ru er (Ac ng Assistant Head of Preparatory School); Mrs Paula Szymenderski (Ac ng Xavier Cluster Leader);  Miss Jessica Mar n (Ac ng Learning Area Co‐ordinator: Health and Physical Educa on); Mrs Jessica Oxley (Ac ng Enrolment Officer) and  Mrs Raelene Ri kis (Ac ng Execu ve Assistant – Balmoral Street) for undertaking their respec ve roles with great efficiency and effec ve‐ness during 2019.  And we also acknowledge and thank Miss Rebecca Andrews (Ac ng Learning Area Co‐ordinator: English); Miss Jess  Palermo (Ac ng Learning Area Co‐ordinator: HASS) and Mr Simon Campbell (Ac ng Educa on Support Co‐ordinator – Balmoral Street) for their leadership during Term Four.  

The following staff will commence periods of leave at the end of the year: Mr Andy Dalton, Mrs Kendra Edmonds, Mrs Ingka Iwansantoso, Mrs Kylie Sammels and Mr David Toop.  May their extended breaks be a  me of rest and relaxa on, an opportunity for personal renewal and afford them addi onal quality  me to spend with their family and friends.

As this is the final Newsle er for the year, I would like to thank all the parents, guardians and extended families that have supported Ursula Frayne Catholic College this year.  The educa on of our young people is a collabora ve effort especially when the values that we uphold o en seem counter cultural.  We are honoured and grateful to be entrusted with a most precious gi , the educa on of your children.  

2019 has been another wonderful year of achievement and growth, both for the students and the College.  Thank you to all parents, grand‐parents, carers and friends of the Frayne community for your support throughout the year.  Your posi ve, construc ve and suppor ve  presence and advice is always well received and helps us learn and grow too.  

May Christ be central to your families this Christmas and may you all have a happy, peaceful and safe holiday.  I thank you for your contribu‐on to our learning and faith sharing community, ‘centred in Christ’ and look forward to your support next year.

UFCC at ACYF  Around 6000 young people from all over Australia gathered in Perth for 3 days to celebrate the Australian Catholic Youth Fes val and amongst them was about 21 student from our College.  There were many different ac vi es to chose from:   An Expo with more than 80 stalls featuring Catholic agencies, organisa ons, religious orders and all types of Catholic movements and 

groups.   Musical performances from local and interna onal ar sts including Australian Priest and musician, Fr Rob Galea, and US singers Joe 

Melendrez and Steve Angrisano.  Presenta ons from local and interna onal speakers, including Ka e Prejean McGrady and Grace Forrest.  Bishops X‐Change: New at this Fes val, young people had the chance to converse with many Bishops about a range of important topics.  Ac vi es facilitated by various organisa ons and groups that encourage young people to engage with jus ce issues and injus ce.  Prayer Room and Worship centre, providing the Sacrament of Confession, masses and different styles of prayer.  The Fes val ended with a Pilgrimage walk from the Conven on and Exhibi on Centre to Trinity College for the closing mass.  This mass was one of the largest Catholic events ever held in Western Australia.  The young people were encouraged to accept the challenges presented by following Jesus and "Don’t walk away sad from the chance to make your life a wonderful gi  to others.  Don’t walk away sad from the chance to live your life to the full just as God intended you to when he called you into existence.  So tonight, take the chance, take your  courage in both hands, and open your hearts and your lives to him.”  At the end of the closing mass Archbishop Costelloe announced that the next ACYF will take place in December 2021 in a rural Diocese of Australia.  So, get ready for the next ACYF and Merry Christmas to all.  Fr Jesus Bello, College Chaplain, Duncan Street Campus

Digital Superstar  

Following up on the story from the Frayne News on 2 December, Saiish Manjire (Year 5) was named as receiving the highest score in WA for the Interna onal Compe ons and Assessments for schools in the Digital Technolo‐gies in his year group.  Saiish, along with his parents and Mr Mills, a ended Government House Ballroom for  the presenta on of medals.    Once again we congratulate Saiish and all students who took part in the ICAS tests.

Middle School News  

YEAR 7 HACKATHON  

In the la er part of this term, Year 7 students par cipated in the STEM Hackathon.  Students were required to apply cross‐curricular learning experiences to undertake a crea ve problem‐solving task aimed at mee ng the needs of the students on the Duncan Campus.  It was an amazing experience to witness students demonstrate key capabili es such as innova on, IT skills, leadership and crea vity which are  increasingly of value in the workplace beyond an ATAR Rank.  Students took ownership of their challenges and moved from simple surface learning to deepen their knowledge and then transfer their developed concept to an audience.   

To begin the Hackathon, students and staff on the Duncan Campus were surveyed to ascertain what improvements could be made to the roo op area of the new building and the courtyard which would benefit the community.  114 sugges ons were made and of these 24 were chosen for the Year 7 students to research and present.  Working in teams, students used cloud tools for data collec on and undertook  extensive research to present the most prac cal, cost‐effec ve proposal.  I enjoyed watching the research develop as they progressed.  

On Thursday the top 6 groups, as voted by peers and teachers, presented to a panel consis ng of Mrs Tania Baharom, Chair of the College Board, Mrs Melody Miles, President of Friends of Frayne, Mr. Geoff Mills, College Principal and Mrs Robyn McMahon, Assistant Business manager.  The College has commi ed to implemen ng the winning proposal.  The feedback from the judges was that the students’ presenta‐ons were impressive, comprehensive and well researched.  All students in the groups spoke and should be proud of their achievements.

Our Year 9 students were treated with a though ul token consis ng of chocolate (got to love KitKats!) as they make their way from Middle School to Senior School.  Thank you  to Bronwyn Bergl and Cherie Abel for pu ng these together.  

UFCC KEYBOARD FESTIVAL 2019  

Sunday 8 December was a day of beau ful piano music at the Fremantle Literature Centre where our piano students performed.  Friends of Frayne were proud to provide hospitality in support of this event.  Thank you to the families who donated lovely treats to share and to Mr Ashley Baker, Mrs Rachel Ossebaar, Mr John Pound, Park Piano and Yamaha Australia.

As this school year draws to a close the Friends of Frayne Council wish to extend a sincere ‘thank you’ to our College community for en‐gaging with and suppor ng our events and ini a ves this year.  We have had such an amazing year and it has been a joy to see our Friends of Frayne spirit alive and well.  

The 2020 College Calendar is currently being finalised which will provide plenty of opportuni es for families to get involved in Friends of Frayne ini a ves and events.  Our aim con nues to be to provide Friendship, Support and Community .
