I you happen to see a cowboy, riding a horse and ponying threemore, traveling on Route 11, stop and say hello.

Chris Blethen, a 37 year old cancer survivor, is riding horses

rom Arlington, exas to Manhattan, New York, and back again, to

raise money and awareness or children battling cancer. Cowboy

Chris is a horse trainer, who volunteers or Heroes or Children

    (HeroesorChildren.org).

Heroes or Children was ounded by two Mothers, Larissa Linton

and Jenny Scott, who each lost a ver y young daughter to cancer. A-

ter suering through their daughters illnesses, and watching those

around them suer, the Moms united to raise unds to help other

amilies during their time o crises. he non-proit organization

raises unds to help individual amilies cope, while a child between

the ages o 0 - years o age is battling cancer. he money raised

goes directly to the amily, and can be used in whatever way the

amily decides, whether it be to pay the mortgage, the electric bill,

or to buy a birthday present.

Concerned that amilies battling childhood cancers were not

receiving enough support, Cowboy Chris decided to ride to Man-

hattan, raising awareness and money along the way. Chris rides

approximately 0 miles per day, weather permitting. He and the

horses travel the secondary highways, taking lots o rest stops, so

no one gets too tired. Chris carries a tent and gear, but preers to

stay with supporters. In a pinch, Chris will stay in a hotel, but only

i the horses have grass and shade near his room.

While traveling through the Shenandoah Valley, Chris was stopped

by Stacy Chandler. Stacy had been ollowing Chris on Facebook,

and knew he was close to her house. Stacy tracked Chris down, and

invited him to stay on her horse arm in Mount Olive, so Chris and

the horses could take a break. Ater a relaxing week-end, Chris will

head north on Route 11, traveling through Frederick County.

Chris has had some interesting adventures along the way. Onenight, he stopped at what he thought was a diner. Instead, he ound

that the town o Cumbey, exas, was having an auction undraiser.

When the participants heard Chris story, they invited him in or

    dinner and then auctioned him

o six times, raising money or

    his cause.

Chris expects to be in Manhat-

tan in three or our weeks. He

will board his horses in Central

Park or a rest, beore starting the

    return ride to exas. Undaunted

    by traic, and looking orward

to making more riends, Chris is

looking orward to being back in

    the saddle.

It is easy to support Cowboy

Chris, and the Heroes or Chil-

    dren organization. Chris accepts

donations on the road, which he

    sends back to exas.

    he Heroes or Children website

allows or easy donation. Or send

    checks to: Heroes or Children,

    Richardson Oice, 1701 North

    Collins, Suite 40, Richardson,

    exas 75080.

Cowboy Chris doesnt let trafc stand in the way

travel, often refering to maps to make sure hes on

This is one cowboy that doesnt need GPS.

o how the individuals survived in thistown. He went on to explain that while the

heart o downtown Stephens City is notnecessarily notorious or seeing some othe more wide-scale military engage-ments that occurred in other areasthroughout the Shenandoah Valley, itstill had to deal with the resulting ater-math o erce local conicts as well asthe dividing turmoil that afected manyamilies during this time period.Fravel was able to provide the tour

group with many examples and histori-cal accounts o amilies being torn apartbecause the town was constantly chang-ing hands between Conederate andUnion orces, making it a microcosmo many similar towns throughout theShenandoah Valley.Te attentive tour participants were

the beneciaries o plentiul, intricatestories o the ounding amilies o Ste-phens City, provided by the dedicatedtour guide Fravel, who is also the Presi-dent o the Board o Directors o theStone House Foundation, a non-protorganization that has historically soughtto engage local residents o their townspast heritage.

Fravel concluded by explaining thatwhile Stephen Citys history is notnecessarily that unique in relation tosome o the other towns that were ac-ing similar circumstances in the chaotic

Shenandoah Valley at the time, the vastamount o primary sources, historicartiacts and other resources have ulti-mately contributed to one o the mostaccurate historical reconstructions owhat lie was really like or people livingin a town like Newtown during the CivilWar and its surrounding periods.

records is through rans Union. Accord-ing to NBC ODAY, i rans Union says

there is no report, odds are good that yourchild is in the clear. But i there is a report or you have a specic reason to believeyour child is a victim youll want to ol-low up with the nations other two majorcredit bureaus Experian and Equiax and get a report rom them, too.Recognize the signs o trouble. Watch out

or red ags that indicate there might bea problem, such as your son or daughterreceiving pre-approved credit card ofersor calls rom collection agencies.Know what to do i you suspect that

your child has allen victim. Accordingto the FC, every parent should checktheir childs credit report on their 16thbirthday. Its not good to check it too oten

since numerous inquiries can hurt a creditscore, but checking at age 16 then leavessucient time to x errors and activitybeore their child goes of to college andtries to obtain nancial aid. I suspiciousactivity arises, parents must contact allthree credit bureaus and request a reportimmediately. From there depending on

    Buying Your FirstComputer

Even in this high-tech world, thereare still many people who are just nowbuying their first computer. The pro-cess doesnt have to be intimidating.Your first step is to decide what youwant the computer for, and how muchyou have to spend.

Here are some tips to get you start-ed:

Make your first purchase from astore, not a private individual, for tworeasons: Youll get a warranty, and ifsomething should go wrong, a call tothe store often will get you a fast and

easy answer.Your best bet is to shop at variouscomputer stores and take notes. Tellthe store techs what youll be using thecomputer for: email, games, a smallbusiness, photograph storage, writingand correspondence, Internet. Theyllbe able to guide you to a computer thatwill handle what you want it to do.

After you buy, before you leave thestore, take the boxed-up computer tothe stores repair area and have virusprotection installed. Either have thetechs start up any pre-installed soft-ware and pay for the next year, or havethem install a different type. Youll

want to make sure your is fully covered before yhome.

    Manchurian Elixir

Its almost impossible to havea daydream about a nightmare. Ithappened to me, though, during thepress conerences at Michigan Inter-national Speedway on June 17.

Stock-car racing changed a lotwhen Dale Earnhardt died because,in his absence, Imperial NASCARhad no one who would stand in itsway. Racing changed when Winstonlet, not because RJR sold tobaccobut because its leaders understoodracing and put their money wheretheir mouth was. Winston had clout.Sprint just writes a check and, as aresult, NASCAR has been uncheckedever since.

David Pooles death removed anobstacle rom NASCARs path. Poolestood up to a ruling body that wasinterested in the media only to theextent that it could manipulate it. A

bone o contention between Pooleand me was his belie that I was notcivic-minded enough. David wouldtrot of a heated email in a heartbeat.

He got rustrated at me because Ididnt think it did any good.

I I told David once, I told him 50times, Sorry. Id rather have the badwill. I I eel Im being treated badly,it uels my writing. Id love to help

you, David, but that stuf just costsme too many columns.

    NASCAR doesnt have drivers

anymore. Te cars are being pilotedby drones. I thought drug testingconsisted o urine samples, but someNASCAR drivers act as i theyve hadsamples taken rom their brains.

Stock-car racers are supposed tobe rugged individualists. Te sportgrew out o hell-raising, plain-speak-ing men who said what they thoughtand didnt lose any sleep over whatanyone else thought. Te legends oCurtis urner, Joe Weatherly, imRichmond and Junior Johnson areas alien to modern NASCAR as KingArthur and Guinevere to Prince Wil-liam and Kate. It took England cen-turies to change. It took NASCAR adecade.

As I read the wholesome pearlso ony Stewarts wisdom, I think oneither Earnhardt nor Poole.

Stewart: ... at the end o the day,I like to have a sanctioning body likeNASCAR that is going to make surethings go the way that they are sup-posed to be and that they arent push-

ing it that ar.I couldve gotten that rom an

episode o Te Mickey Mouse Club:N-A-S ... because we love you ... C-

A-R ... M-O-U-S-E. Except in NAS-CAR, no one even goes through themotions o echoing back DonaldDuck!

Last week I couldnt believe myears reading what Ryan Newmansaid. On Friday, another driver whoused to halway answer a questionstraight, Denny Hamlin, sounded as

i he had been guzzling Dr. FeelgoodsMagical Elixir, too.

Ryan Newman, who apparentlyhas been secretly ned at least twice, said last week, When we are talk-ing about nes, whether it is privateor public, there is nothing really weshould elaborate on because it is notsomething that our sport should beproud o or should elaborate. o me,it is something or you guys to write, but it is not something that is goodor our sport, so its not somethingwe want to keep talking about, rsto all. ...

It is a negative aspect o oursport, and we should all be talkingabout the pos itive things.

I dont know whether the drivershave gone Stepord or Manchurian.NASCAR ocials have somehowgotten them to believe that the sportis hurt every time they express the

view that NASCAR is less than god-like.

Te person I thought o was Jim

Hunter, who actually worked orNASCAR. Hunter oten said thatNASCAR wanted its drivers to speakout, that they brought lie to their

    sport.Hunter, like Earnhardt and Poole,

is dead, and it is as i he never lived. In 1993, Jef Gordon was NASCARsleast outspoken driver. Now hes nearthe top. In 000, Stewart was at thetop. Now hes starring as Alala inOur Gang.

Some drivers ought to be rolledinto the media room like RandallMcMurphey, post lobotomy, in OneFlew Over the Cuckoos Nest.

NASCAR been very, very goodto me.
